RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

All done with the doors! Took 10 hours total, which included: Removing one of the doors and re-doing the strip, since I did not like the way it looked Rewiring one door when I stupidly forgot to pull a wire through the grommet. Unable to get one of the passenger door trims off. Was stuck like...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Finally started this project yesterday evening. I decided to run everything to the center console under the phone charger, since really, there is little to put there, and it is easy to work with, rather than under the dash. Got one door wired, power set up, etc, but no LEDs installed. A few...

May not be the yoke, but rather the harness that feeds it

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

This is a project I would love to tackle, at least until Enhauto can complete their work. The more detailed information you can give, the better!

    Supercharger - West Hollywood, CA (LIVE 2 Sep 2022, 8 V3 stalls)

We could probably fight this, but I had no energy and just paid it, knowing that I was indeed in the wrong. Point of this discussion: don't f*** around with parking in W. Hollywood. You will get burned.

    Supercharger - West Hollywood, CA (LIVE 2 Sep 2022, 8 V3 stalls)

Agreed, unless you are plugged in. They will nail you no matter what. I once was stopped in a bus stop in W Hollywood, and she wanted to ticket me, so I left. I got a ticket in the mail a month later!!! $250 !!!

Thanks! Storage and display. It is a good temperature as is. Adding a cooler is possible, but will cost some significant $$, and we have a smaller cooler for our nicer bottles

Also, looking at SSR's like this one, they come with an optional heat sink. Am I correct that with such low voltage coming through that heat is not an issue? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GNSPCND/?coliid=I2ZAM6VEBELY06&colid=3V8O21SRK912V&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

@Proppilot , what SSR are you using? I see a few on Amazon. The wiring seems quite a bit different that the standard ones we have

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

So glad I could not only contribute, but actually be helpful! It is so intimidating with everyone else having some decent electrical knowledge. @Proppilot, right, there is no need for an actual splitter, but it was the same cos to met, and could allow me to add another OBD harness later. TBH...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I am getting really excited to start this project. I have put so many hours into planning. I re-wired everything under the hood where I have a buck converted fuse block, including my radar detector and power for this project. I have solder-spliced and heat shrunk many connectors together to make...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

So , does that mean if we drive with our lights on all the time, there is no need for any Arduino device?

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

This sounds really cool. A friend of mine has a Mercedes EV whose ambient lights change to red while breaking. I was like, whoa, that crazy. But then, I could see that this could get distracting.

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I also wired out my new OBD splitter, attaching a barrel plug to it, and will use this as my trigger until such time that I can decide on either your SSR or the taekua trigger. I created a pigtail to come off the OBD with 2 diodes in-line to lower the voltage down a bit (in lieu of adding...

    Supercharger - West Hollywood, CA (LIVE 2 Sep 2022, 8 V3 stalls)

I get what you are saying, and there is probably a legal definition to distinguish between the two, but I don't know what it is. If you are sleeping in your car, are you parked, not stopped. If you are charging, you are definitely parked. Being in the car has nothing to do with it.

    Supercharger - West Hollywood, CA (LIVE 2 Sep 2022, 8 V3 stalls)

There is a difference between stopping and parking. If you are parked, you are parked.

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Please excuse my ignorance, but how does one go about programming one of these devices? Also, to summarize how you have this running: the device comes on with the Ambient lights, and if they shut off due to photosensitivety, you can override it and turn them back on. Is that correct?

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Got 'er done. Another splitter I used in the past was easy to map as I could easily see each wire attached to each pin and had 18G wires. This one was impossible to dismantle to check, and uses super small gauge wires, like, 22G or so. The new one is a cleaner install though. I thought I failed...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Update: the wiring on my the OBD splitter listed above does not match the standard OBD colors. I attempted to tear apart the end that I snipped off to match colors with pins, but it is molded together and it does not seem possible. I think I may have figured it out, but seemed to have tripped...

    Supercharger - West Hollywood, CA (LIVE 2 Sep 2022, 8 V3 stalls)

A couple of months ago, I saw parking enforcement ticketing a car for not curbing their wheels. Her car was parked on the same street, and her wheels were not curbed either. I called her on it and took a picture of her and her car. She didn't car, but she did drive around the block to check my...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Excellent explanation and much appreciated. I really hope your ideas pan out. @taekua solution looks promising, but definitely more complex. Hopefully, if he gets it working smoothly, he can dumb-down the solution for others like me. Sorry the links are not working. I just tested it and they...

Definitely no need to apologize! This is strong work. Every bit that you do here is really appreciated. Besides, we all get it: we have lives besides Tesla, hence why I have 3 days set aside for this project when my wife is away. As far as the ambient circuit goes, I am trying to translate your...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I still have a couple of weeks before I can get down and dirty with this project, but I have started prep, such as soldering barrel connectors onto the controller power cables, etc. Until such time that @taekua or @Proppilot come up an ingenious solution to use the Ambient controls, as I...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

This is amazing! I already created the shortcut, along with a few gestures, and I haven't even taken my LEDs out of the box! I have taken this a tiny step further by having the shortcut wait for 10 seconds, then turn off voice control. This way, there is no need to ask Siri to stop listening:

I believe: pin 4 = ground, and pin 16 = 12V (15.5). I am away myself right now, and haven't used this as a source for some time.

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I believe the behavior is similar to the OBD, though I am not sure how Sentry Mode effects it. I am confused about the OEM ambient lights: the lights in the driver's footwell only dim when off, and the door bins are off by photocell? Any insights you glean would be appreciated.
  29. 4SUPER9

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

It still could be on the same photo-sensitive trigger, but perhaps with different sensitivities? IDK, but that seems like a lot of thought that I don't think Tesla would have done. I would still very much like to use the Ambient light switch for this. If this does not pan out, I will take power...

Frunk or front hood firewall wiring access for 2023 Model S Plaid?

Frunk or front hood firewall wiring access for 2023 Model S Plaid?

Did it! It was actually incredibly simple. I was trying to just push a wire through, and I could never find it on the frunk side. I imagine the wire was buried inside the harness. Instead, I took your advise and pushed through the grommet using a wire puller. It was really tight, and I became...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Very interesting. I just took another look. The controllers clearly says 8-14V, while the documentation clearly says otherwise, listing 6-18V. I am going to stay safe and stick with what the controller says, and use my step-down.
  33. 4SUPER9

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I believe @Proppilot mentioned upthread that because the new LEDs are so much brighter, one could leave the original bin lights in place. I would tend to believe that, given that I barely can see them, even when it is really dark. Do you think leaving the original lights on would interfere with...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I just opened the LEDs from Aliexpress. The instructions say that the input is 6-18v, output 5v. Therefore, it seems like we should not require a step-down/buck converter, right? My power source is actually already stepped-down, so it makes no diff to me, but trying to contribute to the group.

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

Thanks for the tip, and I will do that. However, I am referring to the firewall grommet, that goes from under the drivers dash to under the hood. There is a good audio-video shop near me who have done a lot of work on Teslas. They said they can pull some wires for me.

It looks like both @leecox managed as in this post here, as did @S3pirion in this post. It does look good lower down, and seems easier, though personally, I would prefer to be consistent with having all lights under the chrome strips everywhere.

Made an appointment yesterday for today, and the new yoke is in. The material seems a bit more durable. Just as comfortable The haptics seem the same, though the turn signals do seem a bit more responsive and easier for me to use. No staccato horn by palming the right side. I wonder if...

RGB Ambient Lighting project for Palladium Model S - lets do it

I received my strips from Ali, they are beautifully small "tubes" mounted on a nice strip for mounting. The tubes much smaller than I ever expected. You have an excellent point about mounting them on the door side. Does this create any alignment issue when putting the trim back in place?

@Proppilot , God bless you for all the hard work and hours that you have put in, and for the MANY hours of work you will save us! I am planning this project in a few stages. 2021+ Model S Ambient lighting retrofit

A bunch of people are looking at a DIY project here. Definitely making some headway. As someone said above, it will be controlled by your touchscreen via the ambient lighting. Adjustments will be made through a Phone app.
