Cabin camera covered with tape and now I can't use my $5,000 Autopilot option. version 2024.3.25

I'd like to follow-up on this statement for the OP's benefit. First, I don't think you're paranoid. When we get used to and dependent on our technology, it's primed for abuse. A statement that a company "would never" use/send/sell your data is applicable to the moment in time when that...

Do you hand wash or car wash your Tesla?

Got'cha! By the way, thanks for the spelling correction ("peeked" --> "piqued"). ;)

Do you hand wash or car wash your Tesla?

You've peeked my curiosity! What is a waterless car wash system? Is this concept similar to dry cleaning? 😀

Do you hand wash or car wash your Tesla?

You've got a dark colored car (based on you profile picture). Have you used an inspection light to look for swirls? It's been said that this is a consequence of automatic car washes, so I'm curious to see if this has happened to you. For reference, I've only hand washed my car. After 3 years, it...

NTSB update for Autopilot has me looking for an anti-nag device

Okay, I'll bite. So, why is your car constantly nagging you. I have the latest AP software and it rarely nags me. Of course, I keep my hand(s) rested on the steering wheel to quickly take over if need be. Are you saying you do that and it still nags you constantly? Joe

Anyone know how to remove lug nut covers?

I didn't purchase them online but directly from the Service Center, hence I don't have a 'link' to share. 🙁 Joe

I got my new Autopilot defeat device

Makes sense. But, wait, that's not an IR camera in the cabin, is it? If so, where do they keep the cryogenic cooler? Joe

I got my new Autopilot defeat device

I'm curious about when you say: Does that mean your hands weren't on the wheel while driving and you only touched it when prompted? Joe

I got my new Autopilot defeat device

I'm curious, and maybe this has been addressed elsewhere, but what does it do when you're wearing sunglasses? I mean, my head could be facing forward with my eyes closed, head resting on the headrest, and me being asleep. The system can't determine whether or not that's the case. Would it assume...

Jumped the gun with my ceramic coating..... Ok to put on PPF afterwards?

DANG! You're absolutely correct! I failed to mention that and for some reason assumed everyone knew it was a protection 'kit' - mea culpa. Joe

Jumped the gun with my ceramic coating..... Ok to put on PPF afterwards?

I'm not intentionally trying to be pedantic, but when you ask if it's inconsistent underneath the PPF, the answer is no, it's very consistent. I can see a difference between the ceramic coating that was underneath the PPF compared to the coating that wasn't. In other words, it showed me that the...

Jumped the gun with my ceramic coating..... Ok to put on PPF afterwards?

I'm re-applying the ceramic coating on the entire car. Because of this I'll be polishing the entire car first, hence me removing the PPF. And, I already had a second set of PPF so I'm just going to put that back on. For anyone else wondering, I did not notice any yellowing or other issues with...

Jumped the gun with my ceramic coating..... Ok to put on PPF afterwards?

Hmm, this is interesting information on this thread. For my input, I ceramic-coated my car when I purchased it in 2020. Then, I put the 3M PPF on AFTERWARDS. After 3 years, it's time to renew the ceramic coating so I'm in the middle of removing the PPF. This is proving to be very difficult to...

Anyone know how to remove lug nut covers?

Remember, it is a BEAR getting them off the first time - I didn't think it was possible to get them off without breaking. But, it'll be so much easier subsequent times - I've never had any issues afterwards and they've never 'slipped off' accidentally while driving. Joe
  15. joe.smith

Anyone know how to remove lug nut covers?

Just use a sprayer to squirt the soap and water around the cover. If you can pull out the back, then just wiggle it back-and-forth; you wouldn't really need the soap and water in that case.

Anyone know how to remove lug nut covers?

So, I was thinking the same thing when I first tried to remove my lugs covers on my new 2020 Raven Model S. I was so worried about breaking them that I bought an entire new set (for all 4 wheels) to have on standby for replacement. Soap and water did help me remove them and trust me, it's a LOT...

    Tire wear depth

One salient exception: I have the Raven powertrain, so I have an inductance motor on the rear and a PMSR (permanent magnetic) one on the front. I'm not sure it changes your calculus, but I thought I'd point that out for other readers.

    Tire wear depth

I bought this when I took delivery of my Model S. I love being able to rotate my own wheels (they're staggered): Quick Jack

    Tire wear depth

Okay, I found some sources. These are a bit dated, but the physics of the car are the same - that hasn't changed. 1. Although this source doesn't directly address my original statement about more power being applied to the front axle during cruising, you could infer that this may (or may not)...
  20. joe.smith

    Tire wear depth

Yeah, I tried but I just can't dig up my source. Maybe it's something I picked up watching Tesla Bjorn's YouTube channel when he was logging his energy stats while driving? I remembered the point (from where?) because the result was counter to my belief that more torque was applied to the rears...

    Tire wear depth

"Caulk it up" not 'chalk it up?' (I'm sure you stated it this way on purpose -- too funny! 🤣)
  22. joe.smith

    Tire wear depth

One other point, even though the car may have all-wheel drive, in general, more power is applied to the front wheels versus the rear when you're cruising. It's more efficient this way. I believe I read this in the Owner's Manual or some other Tesla documentation. I would have to dig it up if you...

Tesla coffee travel mugs don’t fit a S plaid

I don't understand @CaptUAL, why would you post a picture purporting it as evidence the mug fits your Model S Plaid, when it isn't even a picture of YOUR car, much less a Model S? I mean, even the smudge marks/lint on the center console is the same as that stock photo. Also, isn't your avatar a...

Would you buy a black car again?

My first car was black. My second car was white. I've owned several other color cars in between. It didn't take too long into my 'car owning career' to realize lighter color cars are the way to go! Black looks great in the first year of ownership and especially at night. But, it won't be long...

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

You know, I always suspected they introduced the yoke steering wheel for a move in that direction - press a button, and the steering wheel retracts into the knee bolster or something. It's harder to 'stow away' a round steering wheel versus a yoke.

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

Okay, I'll bite. I don't doubt anything you've said regarding Tesla's statement(s). But, let's take Tesla out of the equation for a minute. What exactly does "self driving" mean? To provide an example, let's say Company A has made statements that they define the word "down" as meaning up. Fine...

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

That is too bad. I thought with the introduction of the Model 3/Y-like scroll wheels to the (Palladium powertrain) Model S/X, they would be given the same functionality.
  35. joe.smith

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

Found it! On the Raven powertrains, the steering wheel stalk used to control the following-distance has been re-tasked with this functionality (you still have to select 'Minimal Lane Changes on the window that pops up, though).

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

It's funny, I came to this same conclusion on my drive into the Office this morning. If Tesla didn't 'force' it, I (and I suspect many others) wouldn't normally use this feature because it's just so bad. But, we are BETA testers, right? This is what we're for - to help improve FSD by actually...

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

Oh, I see. It looks like the 3's, Y's and Paladium powertrains can do this. I have a Raven, so no left/right on the scroll wheel for me. Still, I wish there was another shortcut for me to use. Maybe I'll play around and see. Thanks, anyway!

Tesla, Please consider: One simple tweak could turn FSD beta from "pretty bad" to "pretty sweet"

Really? Do I just hold down the scroll wheel or something? It's super-useful having it accessed that way.

Crazy: windshield replacement -> bricks climate system -> bricks right front passenger door handle

So, did he say how the controller board actually 'stops' the front right door handle from working? Do they write to neighboring memory spaces, have neighboring channels on the communications bus, or something? It doesn't sound like it was a wiring issue because a firmware update won't fix that.
  40. joe.smith

How to return Tesla Model 3?

Methinks he meant take it back to the Service Center when they are prepared to fix the car, not take it back for a refund.

Data after Supercharging Exclusively for 10,345 miles in 3 months

So, I thought the real danger with Supercharging all the time is the large amount of current, which results in an increased amount of heat in the battery versus Level 1 or 2 charging. And, the enemy of Lithium-Ion batteries is heat, correct? I mean, my Owner's Manual explicitly states that...

    How's life without Premium Connectivity?

Just a thought, but serving up satellite imagery requires a lot of bandwidth, and bandwidth = money. If you're not paying for their subscription service, I can see them withholding that feature, specifically.

Brake bleeding tips needed - still have a spongy pedal

What car do you have? You've got to get an adapter specific to your vehicle. When I first did it, I pressurized the system and waited 5-10 minutes before doing anything. If the pressure dropped, I knew I had a leak somewhere. It ended up being at my adapter to the master cylinder. I kept fussing...

Brake bleeding tips needed - still have a spongy pedal

😁 Why, yes, yes it is. An additional complication was that I was waiting for the fluid to come through 'clear,' but my I noticed that my tubing had a slight tint to it. It made it harder to tell when that was happening. Also, I've read that it's possible to get some air trapped in the ABS...

Brake bleeding tips needed - still have a spongy pedal

I've got a question regarding your statement "my master cylinder never got low on fluid". When using the Motive Power Bleeder, how does this ever come into play? Or, did you mean you never allowed the actual power bleeder level to go low? Also, how much fluid did you go through to bleed your...

Brake bleeding tips needed - still have a spongy pedal

I’m just a little confused. Why would you use a pressure bleeder and then have someone pump the brakes? Also, you pontificated that the system had move air out of the system by cycling the ABS system? So, where do you suppose that air went? It’s a sealed system so if there was air, it’s still in...

Brand new MY first time on highway the under body plastic came off

Thanks for the explanation. Here in the States, a 'country road' can be pretty brutal, so I first thought you ran over some large ditches/potholes/rough terrain and such. Seems that's not the case.

Mirrors unfold "randomly" in my garage

For me, I just resigned to living with it. After so many attempted 'fixes' and so many Tesla Service Center visits, it seemed that it could not be fixed. The nail-in-the-coffin was when I had the issue actually elevated to the Tesla Software team and was communicating with them. Still, it went...

Mirrors unfold "randomly" in my garage

Is that for older cars? I have a 2020 MS and have never had to specify the angle the side mirrors tilt look down while in Reverse - from the factory, they just tilted down in Reverse and then back up to my specified setting when in Drive. (By the way, I have blind spot mirrors installed on my...
