    Why even have batteries?

Are you on NEM instead of NEM2? The basic charge for TOU-D-Prime on NEM2 is 0.40 per day. In a 30 day month, that would be $12. If your bill is less than $12 for a 30 day month, then you must not be on NEM2 or you have credits somewhere that reduces your bill below $12.

Ford Bi-Directional Charger for Ford EVs (and maybe Powerwalls?)

None of the cars that have free charging today can do V2H as they are not bidirectional. Only future cars with this feature will support V2H. And none of those cars will be offered lifetime free charging, at least from Tesla. And if other companies or hotels offer free charging, Tesla won't care.

    Chilicon Inverters ?

The PWs would make the whole home generator obsolete, no?

    Sunpower Solar

There are lots and lots of installs that Tesla did right and you don't hear about. 8 weeks from quote to install for me. 2 weeks for PTO after that. May have been even faster but I slowed it down by submitting a price matching quote to Tesla (yes, I found a local guy willing to undercut Tesla...

Ford Bi-Directional Charger for Ford EVs (and maybe Powerwalls?)

When would you want to charge and discharge at the same time? If you are charging, then that means you already have an energy source.

Ford Bi-Directional Charger for Ford EVs (and maybe Powerwalls?)

Bi-directional charging means AC to DC going in and DC to AC going out all while using the same hardware. Tesla won't have to add an all new DC to AC inverter, they would simply replace the diodes with transformers on their current design. There are videos on Youtube about this. It's simple...

Ford Bi-Directional Charger for Ford EVs (and maybe Powerwalls?)

Will Tesla ever let tesla owners use their EV to power the house? Yes, of course. The technology is already available. They already have TEG (the brains of the system). Whether you put dumb powerwalls or rolling batteries on the other side is trivial. In a couple of years when essentially...

    Understanding PGE/SVCE electricity bills/TrueUP

I would assume that your house used it? Power that was generated from solar either goes to Powerwall, grid, or house.
  9. B

    Why even have batteries?

The bill that was shown to be -$10.77 is really $18.23 if the $29 California credit is taken out. But yes, generally your bill may be lower since you have Powerwall and your NBC will be lower. And I'm not doubting that Prime is a better plan for you because as you stated, there are many factors.
  10. B

    Why even have batteries?

If you are a net producer for the full year, and by that I mean if after the 12 month period, you have a credit and not a bill, then it is almost assuredly true that you should be on the TOU 4-9 and not the Prime plan. Take a look at the two monthly bills below. The firs is the Prime and...

    Why even have batteries?

The comment is for SCE customers. I don't know enough about PGE plans
  12. B

    Why even have batteries?

SCE Prime TOU is great for people with EV and no solar. Generally, if you have solar, you would be better off with the TOU 4-9 plan for 2 reasons. 1. The mandatory daily charge will add ~$10/month to the bill. This is on top of NBC. Your monthly bill is likely $18-$24. Monthly bill on TOU...

Elon tweets: Solar Roof and solar panels will only be sold integrated with Powerwall

This tweet is a classic "Look at the squirrel". Lol. Anything so people will stop talking about that solar roof

Elon tweets: Solar Roof and solar panels will only be sold integrated with Powerwall

If not Tesla, someone else will implement. And I don't think it will be that long. Do a search for Mitsubishi. Sunny boy allows it's inverter to have a power outlet during power outage. Sure, maybe you'll have to disconnect from the grid during the outage but there's no technical reason why...

In theory, it had the capability to do it but was never implemented

Elon tweets: Solar Roof and solar panels will only be sold integrated with Powerwall

I disagree that solar+powerall solution is revolutionary. Our grid is very stable and powerall solution is too expensive for the rare times that it would be needed. What we really need is the ability to use that huge car battery to power our homes in an emergency. With cars going the EV route...

Could this be what is coming for everyone one net metering?

Lies, damned lies, and statistics. There must not be a strong solar proponent in Indiana as it's apparent that the regulators fully bought into the biased statistics the utilities were presenting. Basically, they are saying there is no additional benefit to solar generation beyond the wholesale...

Tesla solar not always the cheapest

Tesla does price matching so there's that. Make sure there's a date on the competitor's quote

    Tesla Solar Design Feedback

Yes, that's right. But better to oversize the panels.
  20. B

    Tesla Solar Design Feedback

In my case, ROI for powerwall simply doesn't exist. Currently, my solar makes more energy than I can use so TOU additional charges doesn't apply as my $ balance will still be negative after 12 months. Secondly, saving on NBC doesn't exist with powerwall as there's a ~$10 monthly fee anyways...

    Tesla solar price increase

Just noticed Tesla increased price on solar panels. 8.16kW was $16,400 now $18,032. Price increase across the board. If you are sitting on a contract that haven't been signed, hopefully they will honor it. Good luck.

    True up date

I'm planning on changing my true up date to the first day of the month since this will make it easier to compare data. I was planning on making it January 1st because, well why not. Since we can only do this one, I'd like to make sure I've considered everything. I did notice that if you...

Solar layout - Does this need optimizers?

SolarEdge 7.6kW inverter supports 2 strings. Tesla 7.6kW inverter supports 4 strings. Perhaps Tesla doubled the strings and cut the operating voltage in half? Probably not but it's hard to say since they didn't publish this spec so it can't really be determined the minimum number of panels...

Moving to new house.. solar system sizing

I've never heard of anyone complaining that they put too many panels on their rooftop, but have heard plenty of the opposite, particularly at this price point which is essentially more or less 12K after incentives. 8.16kW system sounds good here.
  26. B

Solar layout - Does this need optimizers?

You will not be limited by the inverters. Your panels are facing West. I don't think they will be able to produce 340W. Add the 2 panels if you like.
  27. B

Solar layout - Does this need optimizers?

Ask Tesla for the Electrical Layout document (at least that's what mine was titled). This should show the groupings and other interesting details.
  28. B

Solar layout - Does this need optimizers?

Each Tesla 7.6kW inverter can support up to 4 strings, each with it's own MPPT. Since you have 2 of these, you can have up to 8 strings. There are other considerations such as minimum panels per string but I don't know the details. Tesla could design such that these panels are separated out...

    SolarEdge extended warranty poll

I’m debating whether a SolarEdge extended warranty on the inverter is a good idea. This warranty would be purchased directly from SolarEdge. The price sheet I have for a 7.6kW inverter is $200 for 20 years and $218 for 25 years. Not sure how old that price sheet is but let’s assume it’s...

    Changing Solar Numbers

Does anyone else see glitches in the Tesla app? About once a week, the data is wrong. I have a 7.6kW inverter so anything above 7.6 is impossible. When I download the data, it matches with the graph so it is also wrong. Then I download SolarEdge data and it is correct and doesn't have the...

How do I connect the SolarCity Zigbee to the Solar Edge inverter?

That's not accurate. I have real time monitoring with SolarEdge without an ethernet connection and I am solar only so no PW.

How do I connect the SolarCity Zigbee to the Solar Edge inverter?

I had this exact same problem a couple of days ago. Your inverter is using one of your neighbor's zigbee box as someone pointed out. That means Tesla still gets the data and you can use the Tesla app but for whatever reason, SolarEdge won't get the data. Same as you, I mentioned to Tesla that...

Inverter size when maximum system is 11.56 kW (34 panels)

You're letting facts get in the way :) Yes, they should do it because they have a fixed pricing strategy and as a customer, I want the maximum output I can get.

Using a Credit Card or Paypal to pay for Tesla Solar

Everyone I've interacted with at Tesla is nice. They don't always give me the answer I'm looking for (give me that PowerBlaster!) and they may be short staffed to cut costs, but they all are nice and competent.

    Need help dealing with Tesla

Now that you got me looking, does anyone have an opinion on whether it's more advantageous to be on the regular TOU plan instead of the TOU Prime plan for EV, taking into account minimum daily charges, credits and such? My solar is expected to generate more than my usage for the 12 month period...

    Need help dealing with Tesla

SCE is fast. Got PTO within 1 day of Tesla submitting paperwork. However, it took Tesla a 1.5 weeks after passing inspection and 1 week after my payment for them to submit to SCE. Not a big deal now but it was for that 1 week I was waiting.

Inverter size when maximum system is 11.56 kW (34 panels)

My thoughts on inverter sizes. Summary - if your panels are predominantly S, SW, SE facing panels, get the largest size inverter you can to match your total panel wattage. As others have noted here, you will be clipping if you oversize your panels. I have the standard 8.16kW system with...

Advice needed on Tesla vs SolarEdge inverter selection

I'm glad this worked out for you and absolutely think you made the right decision. Generally speaking, a string system is inferior to one with optimizers, especially if they are at the same costs. One could argue that at a lower cost, it might be worth it to go without optimizers but that's...

Tesla app not showing home usage when there is solar

Glad you were able to get this resolved. Was chatting with support again today because I'm seeing "no signal" on my gateway because my inverter is using my neighbor's zigbee gateway instead of mine. This usually isn't a problem as the information is still getting to Tesla and I can see my...

Newbie install option / system design

Tesla switched inverter to Delta (no optimizers) from promised solaredge (with optimizers)

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Remember that Tesla offers price match (competitor quote within 14 days of Tesla's quote and other restrictions) but most importantly for you, satisfaction guarantee. From their website when placing a new order - "If you’re unhappy with your order for...

Tesla vs pvwatts vs real life actuals

Tesla estimated my annual production to be 12,500 kWh for the year. After entering in azimuth, array tilt, and size in pvwatts, the estimate there is 12,300 kWh for the year. I left system losses and inverter efficiency at default so that's why the number may be lower than Tesla's. I have...

    Tesla Inverter + Neurio

The generation data is coming from SolarEdge (or Tesla) in 15 min intervals. The net meter data is coming from SCE in 15 min intervals. The consumption is the sum of generation and net meter data

    Tesla Inverter + Neurio

The daily generation data can be downloaded from Tesla app after PTO.

    East facing panels the best?

As others have mentioned, if on TOU, West is better since you want to generate energy late afternoon. However, if not on TOU and want to generate as much energy as possible, get the exact Azimuth and plug into pvwatts to see which one is higher for your location

    Tesla Inverter + Neurio

I was also one of those that didn't get the consumption monitor and was upset about it (still am, actually). But I managed to download the generation data from Tesla (or SolarEdge), my SCE netmeter data, and dumped it into a postgressql database. Then use Grafana to plot and analyze with...
