Wiki MASTER THREAD: Actual FSD Beta downloads and experiences

Rando Q - can FSD override the nav system when it’s wrong? Today the nav system took me the wrong way down a 1-way street. Was not using FSD. I wonder if it would have bailed?

Wiki MASTER THREAD: Actual FSD Beta downloads and experiences

I’ve noticed the FSD trial likes to speed in school zones (28mph vs. 20mph limit) so I disengage for those!

Will the free FSD trial convince you to purchase FSD?

First day of FSD trial curbed my wheel requiring a tire rebalance. Won’t be buying. https://qz.com/tesla-full-self-driving-cars-curbs-elon-musk-software-1851415347 Maybe FSD trial is secretly sponsored by replacement wheel manufacturers?

This is where having such a limited line of cars is hurting them so badly. If they could be cranking out subcompact sedans or crossovers they wouldn’t have to flood the market with model Ys. Need a second electric car (for the kids) now but probably going to be a Leaf or used i3. Needs to be...

Is there a reason to get the Tesla wall connector over other level 2 home chargers?

Based on my HPWC cable the car being noticeably warm (body temperature) at 48A, I suspect it isn’t as simple as you say. I don’t need to resistive heat my garage! When I dial it down to 40A it is much less noticeable (there are other posts on this site suggesting this is the efficient sweet spot).

Your Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Trial starts now!

First day of my SFSD free trial and badly curbed a wheel on a left turn. The tire has a ‘flap loose’ on the sidewall now. What is the likelihood of a replacement being necessary?

No they need more sales of FSD. 🤑

I’m scared to drive my new Tesla in the winter

I strongly suggest Off Road Assist when there is snow on the road. It changes power/regen to 50/50 front/rear, providing much better traction and eliminating fishtailing.

    Re-attaching OEM mudflaps

We had a multi-foot snow dump and my MY lost both OEM mudflaps in the resulting mess. Miraculously, I found both (one was across town). Now I need to re-attach them but of course the OEM clips are long gone. Any suggestions?

Can you make it across the Navajo Reservation?

The Navajo rez is the great American charging desert! We crossed it in March 2022 by staying in the Moenkapi overnight and charging to 100% there. Can you take I-40 through Gallup then Farmington, etc.? Less stressful.

    Cold Weather Chicago?

Owning an EV in a climate with harsh winters without a home charging option seems highly unpleasant.
  21. boulder.dude

What's all the hubbub about charging in Chicago?

No offense, but using an EV as an Uber/Lyft vehicle probably isn’t a good proposition in Chicago winters. 🤷

Cold weather trip; Considering avoiding Nav directly to SC to avoid preconditioning

My experience is that it will only precondition if there is enough juice to do so before the reaching the SC. If not, it won’t precondition.

Cold weather trip; Considering avoiding Nav directly to SC to avoid preconditioning

That’s a pretty big assertion! “Plugging into a SC without preconditioning may damage your battery back.” I have not seen anything official that would suggest this.

    Supercharger - Kayenta, AZ

Can you skip it on both directions? Worried about westbound since (1) Flagstaff and Tusayan SCs require a big climb from Kayenta and (2) headwinds from the west.

    range anxiety

Great update. Wondering if you opened up PlugShare or similar to see if there was close by L2 charging that you could have used in a pinch or not… some areas of the country are “charging deserts with SC oases” though.

    Regenerative braking on icy roads

In Colorado at least it can be very cold with bone-dry roads, and 40F with ice patches in the shade. So not sure how the temp approach would apply. 🤔

    19” vs 20” Model Y LR wheels

I do think the black coated Apollo (that’s apparently the name of the wheel underneath the Gemini covers) looks quite good. I’d probably do that if I got another MY. I’m 2.5 years in on my MY with Inductions, though, and I still think they look great. Nice wheels and I typically prefer OEM...

Tire chains should be on the front, not the rear...

Because the Y is secretly a RWD drive (and regen braking car). It only uses the front wheels to drive and brake if the rear wheels have recently slid out! Every fall at about this time, many of us MY owners feel the urge to write a letter to St. NichElon asking for a real “snow mode that does a...

how do i pick a charging station?

It can be worth cross-referencing Tesla nav with PlugShare reviews. E.g. there are some weirdly bad SCs (e.g. Denver airport where everybody is getting 40kW for some reason) that aren’t noted in the nav.
  36. boulder.dude

how do i pick a charging station?

Biggest benefit of v3 SCs is no risk that you’ll be charge splitting, which can be a killer on long trips with multiple charging stops!
  37. boulder.dude

Regen on mountain descent from house each morning

Charging speed decreases at higher SOCs (witness the Supercharging curve). Your battery can’t charge fast enough to absorb the full regen power.

    Supercharger - Kayenta, AZ

How dicey is the reverse trip (Blanding to Flagstaff)? I figure elevation increase to Flagstaff plus a likely headwind between Kayenta and Tuba City would make it iffy at best. Tesla navigation app detours all the way over to Page for a top up!

Why is the charge port in the back?

Car nav vs. Mobile app disagree on route

I was sitting in the car in Boulder, Colorado and I asked it to plan a route to Tusayan, AZ near the Grand Canyon. It gave me the attached route. It seems a tad optimistic as this route crosses one of the biggest L3 charging “deserts” in the lower 48: the Navajo Nation, between Blanding, UT and...

2170 vs 4680/Standard vs Long Range

I’m assuming since 4680 and 2170 share the same chemistry then they will behave differently. (Cold weather range loss is primarily due to lower efficiency from heating the cabin, fwiw.)
  43. boulder.dude

2170 vs 4680/Standard vs Long Range

When considering MY 4680 vs. LR range difference don’t forget to throw in battery degradation, cold weather, headwinds, new tires, etc. that impact efficiency. Bottom line is many people will want the highest possible “EPA range” starting point to account for all of these factors.

Is there a reason to get the Tesla wall connector over other level 2 home chargers?

Tesla HPWC looks great, opens charge port door with a button press, and can go to 48A. Non-Tesla EVs are adopting NACS connector standard en masse ‘Nuff said!

The slippery slope of electrical upgrades - or help I'm still charging at 120V!

If going to 400A requires a new cable from the power pole, and your cable is buried, that it could be quite costly and disruptive?

The slippery slope of electrical upgrades - or help I'm still charging at 120V!

We added a new panel “in front of” the existing main panel. So the new psnel became the main panel and the existing panel became a sub panel. Then we ran a 60A circuit to the garage from the new main panel.

Traffic stop Energy consumption between ICE and EV question.

Don’t forget regen breaking as a huge energy saver in city traffic. However it seems like ICE hybrids these days turn off the gas engine even at red lights? I hear them start up when the light turns green. L So the efficiency gap between EV and hybrid might not be giant.

    Charging in Phoenix Az Heat

This is just a theory: The roof is deeply tinted, which means it absorbs a lot of the sinun’s energy. When parked for awhile on a hot day, it can become too hot too touch! When driving, the roof is cooled by air flowing over it (even 110F air has a cooling effect on a burning hot roof). Now...
