    Superchargers and Oklahoma

We recently went on a road trip and I was astounded at the lack of superchargers in Oklahoma. In neighborhing Texas there are nearly infinitely many superchargers now. Oklahoma is meanwhile barren, and it isn't a question of demand. Oklahoma city has a single supercharger location, and it was...

    New M3P have lowered suspension?

Lowering springs are just absolutely garbage in every way unless ALL you care about is the looks. The car will get slower around a track, bottom out more often, wear your shocks out, handle badly. It is just bad. We people who say this come from having tried it when we were younger and...

Wiki SpaceX Manifest and Launch Cadence

Cool, so if that cost is real then maybe we see ~$40 million dollar launches if Neutron or Relativity space come online with similar offerings. That might enable a lot of use cases that aren't currently viable.

Wiki SpaceX Manifest and Launch Cadence

I'm curious about the cost of a F9 launch, and the price of an F9 launch. Does SpaceX currently have huge margins, such that the cost for others to get to space could come way down as soon as a competitor exists?

18’’ vs 19’’ Wheels on Long Range

Wheels in an of themselves have very little impact on range. It is the tires on them that have big effects, and at larger wheel sizes your options for economical tires goes down. There are aero designed wheels which have a small improvement in range, but you can get those in almost any size...

    Upcoming M3P hairpin motor question

Tesla Semi’s EPA range rating will simply never exist…Here’s why

Battery packs should too, the economics work out best when you put a ton of miles on the car in a short time. If the car sits a lot the batteries just sit there aging being wasted.

Tesla Semi’s EPA range rating will simply never exist…Here’s why

There isn't a step change in battery degradation at 100%. Its just a little worse at 100% than at 90%, which is a little worse than 80% and so on. Nothing wrong with charging to 100% before a trip.

    Model 3 Performance feels slow?

nope. this just isn't the case. there is a difference, but it is very small, hard to even measure. source: math, and empirical experiment. But if your battery had not been up to temperature, or the state of charge low, when you did that first pull, it would be a lot slower.

    2023 Cadillac LYRIQ

Well part of it is I just do not like large and heavy cars, so I'm not too interested in the model X either. However, the model X is actually a very big car, with spec of 91 cubic feet of cargo area compared to the Lyriqs 60.8, so it seems like the Lyriq is more like a model Y in terms of...

MPP compression rod and control arm bearings.

Should clarify that 35psi wouldn't be a low PSI normally, but Teslas ship with pretty narrow tires for how heavy they are. So if you are on stock tire sizes you might want to stay around 38psi or so.
  24. jackmott

    Tire pressure

Tweaking balance with tire pressure is a thing, when you have no other options. Every tire has maximum grip at some pressure, above or below is less, so you probably gave the fronts more grip relative to the rears with that pressure.

No warning, air bag, or braking - Collision with deer

On the one hand its probably reasonable that a Tesla as equipped with only cameras that see the same kind of light we do, wouldn't see a deer that a human couldn't either. On the other hand Elon likes to promote their tech as "hard core" and doing things totally beyond what anyone else is...

Alignment shop recommendation - North Dallas

A lot of regular places won't do Tesla alignments, there is a step you are supposed to do to tell the computer that the "center" position has changed, which often isn't strictly necessary but if they make big toe adjustments up front it may be. At the moment it seems like only Tesla can do this...

    Shorter range than expected?

Totally normal. The EPA range is a mix of city and highway driving. Highway driving will be less range.
  29. jackmott

    Steering Wheel Vibration

It certainly isn't normal, so I would either stay on the service center to get it fixed, or try a tire shop for the balancing. Also, if you are noticing this as you change lanes (without signaling) this is the lane departure warning system. You can turn that off.
  30. jackmott

Is it common knowledge that wheel spacers reduce range?

As long as the spacers aren't pushing the tire out past your fenders I wouldn't worry about it. There could be negative effects, or positive effects, none are going to be big.
  31. jackmott

Is it common knowledge that wheel spacers reduce range?

not measurably. you can do the math and work out the effect but you need a lot of zeros after the decimal =)

    1/8 mile drag race findings

If you are using track mode at an autocross you sit there in grid just generating noise (and cooling your battery too much). If you use it on the street, you sit there generating noise even when stopped or cruising slowly to where you are driving hard. And you have to go into park to turn it on...

    1/8 mile drag race findings

Sure, but say 100 deg ambient temperature plus driving to the track gets the battery pack to what? When I have done road trips here in Texas preconditioning only kicks in like 15 seconds from the charger, so it must be close?

Is 500-1300wh/mi normal in Vegas heat?

Highway range doesn't change for me much. AC at 72 uses a little extra but the air is less dense. Tends to be a wash. Short trips around town though will appear to be horrible because there is so much overhead cooling the car back down and cooling the batteries back down every trip.

Smaller and Lighter wheels make you faster, more efficient, and offer better road hazard protection.

The efficiency changes in those packages is due to the differing tire rolling resistance (mostly) and aerodynamic difference (a little) not wheel/tire mass.
  38. jackmott

Smaller and Lighter wheels make you faster, more efficient, and offer better road hazard protection.

Where has it been shown that kwh/mile improves (measurably) with lighter wheels? Because acceleration is software limited to 1g, limiting the benefit.
  39. jackmott

Smaller and Lighter wheels make you faster, more efficient, and offer better road hazard protection.

Because this gets forgotten as people roam into this discussion: Nobody disputes that making a thing lighter will result in great acceleration for a constant force. F=MA after all But Tesla vehicles appear to cap acceleration at 1G, and since the cars nearly hold 1g all the way to 60mph, the...

4680 and gigacast model Ys - what is the latest?

I know tesla was selling the two-piece cast, 4680 model Ys on the down low for a while, is that still going on? Are the older battery pack Model Ys coming out of Austin still using the 2 piece giga casting chassis or are they exactly like the previous model Y?

Tein coilovers coming and springs too!

I had Teins circa ~2009 or so on an MR-S and they were fantastic. I absolutely terrorized the Houston region autocross events in all street tire categories. I have heard rumors that Tein really liked the MR-S and put a little extra love into those coilovers, but don't know if that is true.

Effect of wider tires on range

Yep, if you lay down and look at your car from the front, you can see the tires! So can the air. If you lower your car you may reduce the penalty of wide tires, as the air will see less of the tire. It may even reduce aero drag overall (CFD that Unplugged Performance did suggests this does...

[Two] New rear tires and now autopilot weaves

[Two] New rear tires and now autopilot weaves

Already said it earlier in here, but when some tires are too different a diameter than others, the car can't handle it. Solution is make all the tires the same diameter. This *might* happen naturally just driving around for a while if they are close.

Charge at 100% once per week? [LFP RWD model 3]

Yeah, part of what I said was overall degradation of LFP is not as bad. Batteries degrade from using them, and from just time. State of charge has about the same impact on LFP age based degradation as NCA, but since *overall* the LFP holds up better, you get similar overall lifetime even if...

Charge at 100% once per week? [LFP RWD model 3]

The same amount of "harm" is done to an LFP pack charged to 100% as any other pack. It just has to be done or the computer can't know how much range you have left. I repeat there only reason Tesla wants you to charge to 100% weekly is so that battery capacity estimation is accurate. It isn't...

Effect of wider tires on range

If you move to a wider tire and keep tire pressure constant, the area of the contact patch doesn't change. The shape of the contact patch changes, but not the area. It is not the tire touching the road the is costing your energy, the is the energy spent deforming the tire. The casing, the...
