    Long Term Tire Efficiency Numbers

What’s your experience been with the CC2s? I was looking at those and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4, but I’ve really just begun to look. I use winter tires in the cold months so snow handling is less of an issue, but the shoulder months are always dicey so I still want an all-season, not a summer tire.

July 2023 and AP1 is still a better driving experience on Interstates than FSDb

Yeah, that's what I'm still driving, early 2015 S85D, and yes I agree with all the comments about AP1 still being the gold standard (my wife's car is AP2.5). Also, anything from the AP1 era is going to have free Supercharging.

    AP1 ONLY Please -- life after 2018.50.6

From most companies, I'd quickly dismiss the "change the charging curve to fleece the customer" theory as obvious crazy talk; VW executives went to prison for similar shenanigans. From most companies...

I really like Hansshow Ultra Mini Screen Display

That's kind of cool. I fear that the randomly-capitalized "P" in "mP/h" would make me crazy, though. "mph", yes. "m/h", unusual but accurate, and probably should be "mi/h" if you're going to go that way to avoid the collision with meters. "mp/h", no but it's not the worst. "mP/h", whaaaat? Is...

    Comprehensive USB Bug List

Wait a minute, you've had success playing tracks you ripped yourself (and that you're sure are your own tracks, not being matched from Apple's own cloud service, which is a trick they do)? I ask because when I tried it earlier, I had zero luck getting it to play my own, ripped tracks, that are...

10+ minutes to start my "old" tesla is just an inconvenience b/c I chose to do the eMMC recall and install firmware updates

I did pay out of pocket. And (shame on me) I still haven't pursued every escalation path I could, in order to be reimbursed. I haven't given up on it but now the the problem is fixed, the urgency is reduced and so it keeps getting shuffled back...

    Steering Wheel / Yoke option

It's a lot easier to explain that there isn't one, than that something has moved. Same. Same again. At least in my cars (2015 S, 2018 3) that have physical control stalks, this is an easy one: "like any other car". If you mean one of the new ones with buttons instead of stalks, yeah, good...

Also, naming no names, but I like runny eggs too. As I recall, the cross-over restriction existed before airbags did. My vague memory is of being told as a learner that there was some notional risk of your arms getting entangled with one another? I guess this is not much less plausible than...

    Roadster 2023

Well, yeah, but that's only because in your telling you aren't calling the $5M in cap gains "income". But it is. $1M paid on $6M net income is... perfectly reasonable. I mean, yeah, some of the other things you listed genuinely do throw off taxes regardless of your income, but your primary...

    Steering Wheel / Yoke option

I think the only honest answer to this kind of request to foretell the future can be "no, nobody knows". Even more than run-of-the-mill companies, Tesla has a history of saying they're going to do something, and then never doing it. There are big examples like the promised cross-country...

    Steering Wheel / Yoke option

The honest mechanic I spoke with sort of suggested that -- strong adhesive to just glue the whole thing on. He threw it out as a ha-ha-I'm-only-serious kind of comment, and not one the SC would have been willing to do. I'm hesitant to take such an extreme and irreversible step.

    Steering Wheel / Yoke option

If I could change one thing about my build, it would be to get rid of the sunroof. It squeaks so much. I finally gave up trying to get the SC to fix it after my umpteenth try when a mechanic finally gave me the truth which is that it's a common problem and they have no fix. (I am glad to see...

This is good advice as long as you have opted out of the arbitration clause. I didn't, to my chagrin. I'm never making that mistake again. Thanks for that. My car has been failing to respond to any form of remote open since the MCU2 install -- no unlock, no trunk, no frunk. That makes sense but as usual there are unintended sidequences -- I often pre-warm the seat for my passenger (which is sometimes a pizza box :). That's OK, the seats heat up fast. By the way, what's "PTC"? From context I assume it's the resistive heater, but the acronym doesn't speak to me.

There's "slower" and then there's "basically nonfunctional" which is where mine has gotten to. As an example of what I mean, I'm talking about "put car in reverse, wait two or three minutes for reverse cam to come on". There are many more examples, but this isn't the place for an exhaustive...

I had the recall done. Some (weeks? months?) later I noticed similar symptoms to what OP reports -- unacceptable freezes, getting progressively worse. Some of these are safety-relevant, for example the reverse cam failing to engage for minutes on end after putting the car in reverse. I also have...

    Supercharger - Findlay, OH

I have a trip coming up to Springfield and idly put it into the nav system, and it found me a route with a charging stop in Findlay. I was surprised. Porsche Mission E

The article said it was 55F, hardly a big power-suck, although indeed in the sweet spot for heat pumps. That sounds right. That said, for my purposes (and, I would guess, those of most drivers) range is most important for highway driving. SO WHATS with the extended warranty?

I did it simply for peace of mind. As luck would have it, just a few months after it came into effect, my air suspension needed more than a thousand bucks worth of work, so it's got a good downpayment on paying for itself already.

    AP1 ONLY Please -- life after 2018.50.6

I've recently noticed two changes in AP1's behavior. I'm currently at 2019.40.21. First, it's possible to dial TACC down all the way to zero if I want to. It used to bottom out at 18 mph. Second, and I think related, I don't think TACC used to blend in brakes to maintain the set speed, it would...

How to save a lot of time on long trips

One thing that's not obvious to new owners or those who don't drive in the cold that often, is that range loss in the cold is highly dependent on trip length. For short around-town hops, I sometimes see the energy meter reporting range of less than half nominal. I think that's attributable to...

How to save a lot of time on long trips

My understanding is that it's considered ideal for average SoC to be 50%, meaning that if you expect to use (say) 20% during a given day, you'd plan to start the day at 60% and end at 40%, thus cycling across 50%. That said, that's the ideal, not mandatory, (and I'm neither an authority nor do I...

Tesla Takes Tug-of-War With Ford to Twitter

I agree with that part, especially since Tesla is offering a RWD version of the Cybertruck. On that part, it really depends on what the test is meant to prove (or "prove"). Someone upthread pointed out that if the question is "can my truck pull your truck out of a ditch?" then "hang on a few...

    UMC2 handle won't latch

Thanks. Perversely, after my car finally finished charging at 16A, when I went out to unplug and move it (so my wife could charge) I found the handle had finally engaged. Go figure. Me too. The one that melted had been plugged in for months. I guess maybe the lesson is leave it in, but check it...

    UMC2 handle won't latch

The UMC2 handle is definitely snug. I've considered putting some silicone grease on it, but overall it didn't seem like a prudent thing to do. I normally charge my early 2015 Model S using the original-version 40A UMC that came with it. Annoying to Full Press Break to Avoid Rolling?

I don't understand (or agree with) this point at all. It's funny that you present turning creep off as "pretending" something -- surely turning creep on is a way of pretending that you're driving an automatic ICE with a torque converter? In any case, creep or no creep, the points you raise are...

Annoying to Full Press Break to Avoid Rolling?

Huh, there must be substantial variability between cars I guess. Moderate pressure is enough to engage hold on my early 2015 Model S. I had a loaner of similar vintage recently that required much more pressure for similar braking.

Tesla submitted a proposal for a heavy duty charging standard (3MW)

Unless I've slipped a decimal place somewhere, an array with a nameplate rating of 1MW would require around 3,333 panels, which works out to around 58,500 square feet, or a square 240 feet on a side, ish. Call it 100 yards on a side, conservatively, because you need some spacing between rows to...

Here's How Tesla Managed To Increase Model 3 Range Rating

I've seen it claimed elsewhere, and have no reason to doubt it, that hard acceleration is in fact not more energy-hungry than mild acceleration. You just get to your target speed faster -- you're consuming more power, but for a shorter time, so energy can be a wash. Of course speeding up and...

Here's How Tesla Managed To Increase Model 3 Range Rating

Right. This should be burned into the memory of anyone who lived through the 1970s and the "drive 55" campaign in the USA. That was all about trying to get people to drive in the sweet spot of fuel efficiency in order to weather the OPEC embargo. (It worked predictably well, of course.)
