    Model Y Nitpick Thread

Took the car on a 20 mile journey to a highway and the nearest Tesla dealership in an attempt to calibrate the retarded cameras. Finally, after 300 miles, I got to 100% and could engage autopilot. It impresses me that it can complete the trip home, but it doesn't try at all to avoid road hazards...

    Punctured tire/question

I appreciate the response and attention to safety. That said, you don't know anyone who has died from a tire plug failure. You don't know anyone who knows someone who died of a tire plug failure. We're going to die like everyone else; from heart disease or cancer. Anyone who is fearful of a...

Is the cost of PPF worth it?

Haven't tried it yet. I need to do a thorough washing first, but pollen season means I'll have to wait. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08MTBHS7N/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is the cost of PPF worth it?

You made the claim, so you support it... and I misspoke, it cost me $20. Can I get unobtanium silicon dioxide for that price?

    Punctured tire/question

Who experiences "a blowout" due to a failed repair? The only time I've experienced "a blowout" is when my car is hurtling through the air, or otherwise smashing violently into obstacles only maniacs hit. Worst case, the repair is insufficient, causing a gradual reduction in pressure...

Is the cost of PPF worth it?

For $15 I'm unlikely to get silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide? Is it unobtanium that can only be extracted from indigenous tribes?
  9. redpoint5

Is the cost of PPF worth it?

I spent $15 on PPF and $15 on ceramic coating. I figure a bit of elbow grease and $30 is worth the experiment anyhow.

Order before March 1 or wait until end of Q1

Juniper is supposed to reduce cost, which should at minimum hold price. Price is subject to market forces as always. What is the price of a Tesla vs the price of other competition, and the perceived value of each.
  11. redpoint5

Order before March 1 or wait until end of Q1

Do the ends justify the means? There's a good chance that Tesla would be Acrimoto if unrealistic optimism and unlikely timelines weren't employed. The example I always give is that Elon says FSD (a misnomer for sure) is bargain priced now for the early adopters, but will increase in price in...

Slow L2 Charging on Emporia EVSE

Yep, I was confused with the amps and watts. Charging near normal it seems.

Slow L2 Charging on Emporia EVSE

I've been snaking the charging cord out from the 30A dryer outlet in the washroom to charge the Tesla, and earlier today it was charging at the 24A limit I set. After plugging in again, it's limiting itself to 5kW. I'm using an Emporia 60A EVSE with a NEMA 14-50 to NEMA 14-30 adaptor. Any ideas...

Anyone use the OEM front license plate holder?

Exactly backwards. If the state accuses someone of something, it's incumbent on the state to provide evidence. It's perfectly legal to not have insurance in Oregon for a car not driven on public roads. They're the ones the suck, and they suck hard.

Model Y - vehicle 4 weeks old already 2 tire punctures - warranty coverage?

I'd probably put 2 plugs into that and see how it held up. Maybe I'd see if Les Schwab would patch it. You're the tire guy though, so I can see you shaking your head at me now. ... I did use double plugs once when a rock punctured a tire while Christmas tree hunting. Rather than monkey around...

    Model Y Nitpick Thread

I don't know how involved you're willing to get, but I've been using 32700 7.2Ah LiFePO4 cells that can be had for around $4 each (if you order a bunch) from Aliexpress. I've got no idea if that ends up being cheaper than purchasing completed batteries. Probably not worth the headache of...

    Model Y Nitpick Thread

I thought charging below freezing was an issue for all chemistries. Apparently some handle it better? I assumed Tesla had a heater for the low voltage battery, but you're saying it doesn't? I place mine in the glove box to keep it from freezing temperatures, or in the case of the Prius, the...

    Model Y Nitpick Thread

That's a great explanation for those unfamiliar with cell voltages and low voltage architecture. I'm more curious why they didn't go with 4s LiFePO4 to bring the voltages very close to standard ~13.3-14.4v in cars with lead acid batteries? They're theoretically more durable and safer. It's the...

    Punctured tire/question

My comments are often rhetorical to the OP, but meant for the larger audience. That said, I still encourage people to at least try their own repair considering how frequently punctures occur, and how simple it is to recover from it. Worst case they wasted 10 minutes and $2 on a tire repair kit.

    Punctured tire/question

Buy a $2 tire plug kit, pull the screw out with pliers, and permanently fix the leak in like 5 minutes without taking the wheel off the car. Thank me later.

    Model Y Protection

Where in Oregon are you driving 300 miles to pick up a vehicle? That's like corner to corner. What's this $7,500 Oregon rebate? The DEQ website advertised $2,500; or $5,000 if you're low income (generally precluding the federal tax subsidy).

Anyone use the OEM front license plate holder?

I got a ticket for expired plates while parked in San Diego. It was a Turo rental, so I didn't personally care, but I was surprised it's not legal to have expired plates on a car not being driven. Not that surprised though, because I got a ticket for not having insurance on a car registered to...

Haven't been on long straight roads. I need to spend some time on I-5 it seems. It was raining fairly heavily Saturday, and I gave it minutes to activate, but it never did. Finally I manually triggered the wipers and continued to do so throughout the drive. At some point it activated...

    Model Y Nitpick Thread

I wonder if the glove box difficulty is a "feature" since a thief inside the car would not have access to it. Might be one of the better spots to put valuables if it must be left in the vehicle.

    Model Y Nitpick Thread

Way cheaper, though switching insurance always saves a ton because of rate-creep. Geico was billing me $83/mo for liability only insurance on a 2006 Acura TSX. Tesla full coverage is $99/mo with roadside assistance (which was just a few cents a month). I'm sure Tesla will increase the rate...

    Model Y Nitpick Thread

I've seen others on the forum reporting 1,000 miles to calibrate, so I'm not concerned. Apparently it wants a straight freeway to quickly calibrate, and there's only backcountry roads around here. The mirrors are a very minor complaint given the backup cameras and overlay of obstacles in the...

I didn't see a master thread on Model Y nitpick issues. Anyone use the OEM front license plate holder?

I just installed a cheap holder from Amazon, though I don't have plates from DMV yet. It blocks a small portion of the grill, but it won't cause any overheating problems, I'm confident. Cooling systems are always over-engineered to account for the guy pulling a 3,000 lb trailer up a hill at 80...

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

That seems to suggest you have the long range battery then, right? This data point conflicts with your prior observation that the car wouldn't pull more than 160 kW. As far as I know, we still cannot conclude anything about what battery the 2024 RWD has.

Gen 1 High Power Wall Charger - TPN 1011831-00-D won't charge 2023 MY?

Super informative, thank you! So those old EVSEs are the thing not adhering to the J1772 design architecture, and not Tesla. ...I've got an endoscope arriving today, so hopefully that will allow me to fish the pull string to my breaker panel, otherwise I'll either need to cut my wall open, or...

Gen 1 High Power Wall Charger - TPN 1011831-00-D won't charge 2023 MY?

I'm clearly senile, but that's still a dead simple circuit that high schoolers would make. The point is, if something adheres to the J1772 protocol, then it should just work. That's the point of adherence to a protocol.

Who's using what for winter tires for the PNW?

I'm torn between running CrossClimate 2 year-round, or buying a set of 18" wheels and mounting dedicated snow tires. Although snow is fleeting in the PNW, I seem to need to travel to Idaho or Montana in January every year, and that requires capable tires to travel at ~55 MPH on a layer of snow...

Gen 1 High Power Wall Charger - TPN 1011831-00-D won't charge 2023 MY?

The J1772 spec is so dead simple though. The EVSE advertises its capabilities with a resistor, which the charger measures and understands the max charge rating is. Then the charger initiates charging at or below that advertised capability. These things are barely more complicated than an...

I regret my Model Y purchase because of seat comfort and seating position problems

I was surprised to find how narrow the seat bottom bolsters are. I too, am 6'2" and 180, and have a skinny bottom and waist (32"). The bolstering isn't wide enough for me, and certainly not for my wife (6'1" 145 lbs). With 80% of the US population being overweight or obese, I'm surprised the...

Gen 1 High Power Wall Charger - TPN 1011831-00-D won't charge 2023 MY?

Whelp, I failed to fish electrical to my breaker panel over the weekend, and figured no big deal since I have 2 EVSEs I can use on either 120v, or my 240v dryer outlet. Both EVSEs are GEN I Leaf that I modified to work on 120v or 240v. They charge a Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf just fine. The...

I checked 1 week after taking delivery, and my 5,000 supercharger credits now shows an expiration date of March 31, 2026, confirming the experience @BroncoAZ had that it takes a week to update the expiration date. FSD free trial

I'd consider it if it was at least as safe on the freeway as me driving and it was legal to allow it to drive autonomously without paying any attention. Taking a snooze on a road trip at night would justify the expense to me, especially if it's saving money on airfare. That said, I'll wait for...

Whats the largest Power Inverter you can use in a Tesla?

I was going to mention that newer Tesla are coming with 16v lithium ion batteries instead of 12v lead acid, and they may be too high voltage for some inverters. My 4,000 watt inverter has a max input of 16v, so I'm right at the limit.

    FSD free trial

Maybe it's a staggered rollout to not overwhelm the servers? I got updates last night and have FSD trial through July (1 month free plus 3 months using referral bonus). Unfortunately I can't use it since cameras are calibrating. Calibration has been stuck at 80%, so I went for a drive...

Trading in your Tesla? Be sure to factory reset! I didn't....

I bought a reconstructed title Prius plug-in once, and it didn't come with the factory EVSE and was missing the 2nd keyfob. I looked up "home" in the infotainment screen and found the home phone number of the original owner, who then gave me the EVSE and 2nd keyfob.
