New Roadster 4.0 Battery developement with Model S cells

Will the Model-S based one get to any sort of distribution? It would be nice to have an alternative to what Tesla is (slowly) providing. Chasing the latest battery technology makes for a never-ending academic research project. Very worthwhile, but a different objective.

    Replacing Tesla Roadster 12V battery

The couple of take-aways from my thread were that one does not have to remove the wheel in order to get to the battery (though it helps if one is on the smaller side), and that the battery is kept at a constant 13.8v by the car's "charging" system. Other than when there's a major system fault...

Cold weather seems to limit power although the battery is warm - I`m at a loss...

Mostly in the hotter time of the year, but any time really. It seems to be triggered by a temperature change more than the absolute ambient temp. As things get hot the sensor contact seems to kind of "scrape", causing the intermittent (and by the laws-of-thermodynamics impossible) temperature...

Cold weather seems to limit power although the battery is warm - I`m at a loss...

Presume you've pulled the logs. Anything interesting in there? I have a sort-of similar situation, though mostly in hot weather, where the car intermittently goes into Power Limited mode because it thinks the motor is overheating. The cause is that Sensor #2 is sending bogus (impossibly high)...

Charging with Tesla “Universal” Wall Connector?

I expect it will work just fine. I've been using one of the OpenEVSE chargers. I think it was this one: Discontinued May 2018 - v4 Standard or similar. 50 amp circuit, charging the car at up to 40 amps though I usually dial it down to 24 amps just to be nice to everything. It's been in...

    2.0 / 2.5 Roadster / Roadster Sport Tire Thread

I went to a local tire shop (Les Schwab), and they ordered them from Continental. As for jacking up the car, I spoke with the shop manager and let them know that they must only use a floor jack, and only in the specific jack points. Failure to do so could total the car. That got their...

Roadster 2.5 double DIN radio options

If the in-dash unit is otherwise working for you (radio, media player, navigation, etc.), another option for speed is to get an OVMS v3 and an OBD-II HUD (Head-up display). The v3 includes a process that can create a virtual OBD-II port, feeding it from the Roadster's real-time metrics.

{bump} Has anybody used these sensors in the Roadster? If so, how'd they work out?

    2.0 / 2.5 Roadster / Roadster Sport Tire Thread

Probably best NOT to go with that combo. You're mixing summer and all-season tires, which is not recommended. That said, my car came from its previous owner (who lived just down the peninsula from you) with the Advan's on the front and Michelin Sport AS on the rear, and never experienced a...

    2.0 / 2.5 Roadster / Roadster Sport Tire Thread

They're just more of the same bolts used on the rest of the wheel. I got a set of 4 directly from the local Tesla SC. This was several years ago (back when Tesla still acknowledged that the Roadster even exists). They were something like $36, and they replaced the set for free in a quick...

    2.0 / 2.5 Roadster / Roadster Sport Tire Thread

I have the Extremes, and like them. They perform very well, and seem to be lasting reasonably well. I don't worry about driving in a little rain, but if it's really nasty out I take a different car, just because. The DWS's should last longer, if that's a concern, but when I was looking I...

    TPMS sensor battery failed

An update... Checked with several tire stores about programming Shawn's recommended sensors. Nope; the shops only have equipment to program the ones they sell. No go there. Two shops show the "OEM" Baolong sensor for the 2010 Roadster, and give instructions for how to tell the car how to do...

    TPMS sensor battery failed

Hi Shawn, Thanks for the info, but the Amazon link doesn't appear to include the product info. Could you edit that? I recall your TPMS adventure thread. Thanks for the work you put into it. We all benefited from it. Greg

    TPMS sensor battery failed

Just a thought... This would be too easy, but by any chance are the sensor IDs stored somewhere in the log file? The car must know what ID it's looking for (and didn't find), so a message "TPMS sensor xxx:xxx not found" would be a natural thing to log.

{sigh} Thanks for the help... I'll check around.

    TPMS sensor battery failed

That's kind of what I thought. There's one other tire store near here, an independent, that I can check with. See what they have. But assuming they can't do better, is there any particular brand or type of sensor that I need to get in order for it to be compatible with the car? Are they...

    TPMS sensor battery failed

Yep. I've got the OVMSv3, but with the original diagnostic port cable that is missing the connections to the other two CAN busses and don't have the K-line expansion board. My OVMSv3 is one of the very early ones (first real production run), so am wondering if it even compatible with the...

    TPMS sensor battery failed

Stopped by Les Schwab this afternoon, and caught them at a good time; not too busy. We took a scanner out to the car, and were able to read three of the four tires, but that last one could not be seen. At least I have a record of the others. The technician did some research, and I'm a little...

    TPMS sensor battery failed

How do I find the ID on the bad one? Is it stamped on the unit somewhere (i.e. have the tire shop write it down when swapping units)? I don't "do" tires myself... Can the tire shop do the cloning?

    TPMS sensor battery failed

Hi folks, It looks like my front-right tire's TPMS battery has died. The TPMS system is showing the 3 other tires just fine, but this one reads zero for both pressure and temp. So (for a change), it's not the car's "antenna" that failed. I presume the tire needs to be de-mounted and a new...

    Gruber Roadster shocks?

Thanks for letting us know the story behind the new shocks. I was tempted to get a set, but not now.

    Gruber Roadster shocks?

Thanks, very clear. Now, if one orders the Gruber set intending to install them on a 1.5 or 2.0, are the clamps provided, and are there mounting holes already present in the frame? Or do we need to find our own and drill holes?

    Gruber Roadster shocks?

I'm not a "shocks" person, so wondering how they'd work. Where does that cylinder go? The standard shocks don't have it (at least, not on my 2.0 non-Sport).

    #428 Aux Battery Supply Low 13.x V

I did a bit of analysis a few years ago when my 12v battery died, taking some time to understand how the system worked. 12v battery time (sigh) Note that this is a US car, so it does not have the immobilizer system common to the European models; I don't know if that substantially changes...

    Roadster changing with NACS?

Yep, the QCP solution. But that involves modifying the car in a way that Tesla won't touch it, and it doesn't do NACS either. I'm just thinking that there's an opportunity for the non-Tesla NACS folks to up the game a bit with a solution that does both DCFC and AC to pick up the L2 market...

    Roadster changing with NACS?

If the charger is only providing 400v-ish DC, no external "upgrade path" can be created short of making a 400v DC -> 240v AC inverter. We'd need to have 240v (or more likely 208V) AC supplied on the NACS charger's connector for my question to work. The Roadster does not have a way to consume...

    Roadster changing with NACS?

With a number of charging providers and auto manufacturers jumping on the NACS (aka Tesla charging connector) bandwagon, I wonder... The chargers are intended to support DC Fast Charging, and we already know that plugging a Roadster into a Tesla Supercharger outlet via the CAN-SR adapter...

New tires in LA - where to go?

I just go to the local tire chain here (Les Schwab). Tell them that there are specific jack points, do not use a lift, and that failure to observe these rules can total the car. That gets their attention, as it's their insurance that is at stake. Also if you still have the keyed lug bolts...

    BSM and BMB update problem

For the 1144/1146 errors, also check the connections at the blower end (presuming you have the single motor / dual blower upgrade). Mine were loose on that end, causing the PEM end connections to fail. See the last few posts of this thread: Think I need a new PEM Fan... Anything else to check?

Charging parameters reset - what happened?

First thing I checked. No, the GPS reading was good, and the clock (both time and date) correct. I had updated the GPS firmware a few years ago. There would also have been a "car being flatbedded" alert from OVMS if the GPS had wigged out, and while I have seen those, the location change was...

    Troubleshooting: 1115 & 1116 alerts

Yeah, thought of that, but looking back in the logs I see that this car has had the issue on and off for many years, going back well before I owned it. I've also rebuilt the wiring harness going between the PEM and fan blower motor, which solved the 1144 / 1146 errors. The PEM itself hasn't...

Charging parameters reset - what happened?

Hmmpf, doesn't sound good. My car's log is written to more often than most, since I've got a flaky temperature sensor in the motor which causes a lot of 1115 / 1116 errors. (Any thoughts on that one would be appreciated!) What are the practical implications of a reboot? I.e., if I'm driving...

Charging parameters reset - what happened?

Ok, so this is weird. My car was set to charge starting at 10pm, and at 24 amps even though it's on a 50 amp circuit. No point going faster, and nighttime electric charges are lower. But I found the car charging on its own this afternoon (5/16/23) around 2pm. After it had finished, I poked...

    roadster without power, 12V problem?

Possibly the VMS (main computer) has crashed? It's located under the dash, behind the glove box. Two connectors on the back (one blue, one black) that can be removed and replaced to reboot it. There's a thread here somewhere on how to do that without damaging stuff. Review that first.

    Red error alert ID901&ID920

Ok, good to know. So, you still have the two-motors one-fan-each arrangement? Mine is one motor with two blowers, so my thread's solution of wiring the two sides together does not apply to your case. When I did my own cleaning out of the PEM and motor debris last year, I had a 901 error (I...

    Red error alert ID901&ID920

Not the problem with charging, but while you're under the car you should check the other end of the PEM Fan cable, where it connects to the fan assembly. The two sides (PEM and Motor) connect in parallel on the motor side of the pair of F-connections. On mine, the electrical connections...

New Tesla branded chargers with original Roadster?

The one time I had that alert (if it was exactly the same one) was at charging station at one of the Tesla Service Centers. They were some older ones (Level 2) that the Sales guys used for the demo cars. I asked about it and they said something to the effect of "Yeah, we've been having...

New Tesla branded chargers with original Roadster?

What Midnightsun said. The few times I've used the Tesla type charging stations in the wild they were good for 40 amps, but could be anything depending on how they were wired and what their configuration switches are set to. In theory the two should match, but it's possible that the...

    12V Battery Help

Ooh, good point. To the OP, there may be something else going on that may seem like a 12v issue but isn't. (Thinking maybe switchpack or APS). That should take priority over the battery itself. What else is not working as expected, besides not being able to drop into neutral? You have a...

    12V Battery Help

Yes, the battery is definitely accessible without removing the wheel. I turned the steering all the way to the right, and just reached in around it. It's tight, but doable. Details posted here: 12v battery time (sigh) For the battery I just went to the local car parts store. TL;DR: If you...

Old Roadster pack is recovering after going below CAC 76?

Correct. No DC charging in a stock Roadster. The motor windings do generate 3-phase AC, but it gets rectified by the PEM before being sent to the battery. The JDEmo unit sits electrically between the PEM and the rest of the car (i.e. the battery), with a contactor (massive relay) that...
  45. gregd

Old Roadster pack is recovering after going below CAC 76?

The JDEmo unit actually does supply DC to the battery pack. What it does is rather clever, simulating the car going into Regen mode but with the power coming from the external charger instead of the traction motor. This is a 3rd party add-on; the stock Roadster can only charge on AC, though at...

New Roadster 4.0 Battery developement with Model S cells

Awesome, indeed! Once the cells are acquired, how will the purchase & install process work? I'm thinking the best would be to put an order through Medlock or Gruber... Also, since you're working with Tesla on this, can we presume that other Tesla service items won't be denied? They've been...

    #1452: HVAC: low pressure ...critical?

Criticality depends on ambient temps and usage. The HVAC is used to keep the battery cool during use and charging. Lacking an effective cooling system, the battery could overheat. I suspect that running it much could also damage the compressor?

New Roadster 4.0 Battery developement with Model S cells

Excellent progress! Any guesses on when (if?) this will become an option for those of us with currently ok batteries, realizing they won't last forever? Mine seems to lose a couple of miles of range per year, and with a standard charge now down to 154 miles, the end of practicality is...

New Roadster 4.0 Battery developement with Model S cells

Its not a battery thing. The plumbing to connect the battery to the external (super) charger is not present in the Roadster, so there's no way to supercharge them by simply swapping batteries. The PEM is the charger, and it's limited to 70 amps at 240 volts (which isn't half bad if you can...
