CarPlay solution for Tesla by Michal Gapinski using Raspberry Pi with Android

Have you tested against older model 3s that have poor antenna placement? (i.e. does the ability to use an external antenna mitigate those issues?) Currently, both Tesla Android and the various CarPlay dongles/solutions perform really poorly.

Can you create a Shortcut/Automation to have your phone activate Personal Hotspot when it connects to CarPlay?

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Thanks for the explanation - I guess I'm still hung up on how the Ownice would essentially have to combine or bridge the two wifi connections for the car to have any connectivity at all. So the Tesla's wifi is occupied by the Ownice, which would then need to provide an internet connection...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

What's your understanding of how this "2 wifi" works? Is it somehow actually 2 separate chipsets and/or connections concurrently? With a lot of these products, I've found that their descriptions are either purposely misleading or just inaccurate (i.e. maybe 2/dual wifi actually really only means...

Are you using a CPC200-CCPA (or a CPC200-Autokit) with your Tesla Android to achieve that higher-res 30fps CarPlay?

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Even at the glovebox (under), it was wildly inconsistent. The only place it seemed to perform well was on top of the dashboard, right next to the A-pillar, up against the window. Not a great permanent mounting location. Thanks for the info on AMD-required - I wonder if it's because of the...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

I wonder if the Ownice has a superior antenna to the T2C, for those of us with older cars. Probably impossible to tell without ordering one though, and I'm not up to spending $100+ just to experiment. At least at Amazon I could return it if it didn't perform.

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Yes, I tied both 2.4 and 5GHz, tried multiple channels too, no luck. Works relatively smoothly if I literally hold it (well, my wife is the designated holder) right next to the passenger side mirror, where the antenna is. I'd swap out the antenna, but haven't found clear enough instructions for...

2018 Model 3 here, it's unusable. Antenna location is terrible.

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Kinda/sorta off-topic, but related: Has anyone seen a tutorial on how to get to the MCU on a Model 3/Y, to replace its antenna? I know there's a Reddit thread out there that has one or two photos, but I haven't found anything that is enough to instill enough confidence to give it a try. That...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Yep. The main issues appear to be the phone not always connecting to the T2C automatically and then issues joining the AutoKit SSID (no DHCP or no internet errors, or prompting for the password repeatedly). I'm able to get it to work ~5min into most drives now, but most of the time it lags...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Yes - heck, even my car suffered from the infamous factory-reset bug while I was testing the T2C initially. (recent software update caused it to reset everything) So for this thing, I've factory reset my car, my phone - all for the novelty of CarPlay, I guess.
  14. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Yes, I did. I've gotten it to work with more consistency now, not sure what's changed, frankly. It eventually starts working - perhaps it's the time it takes for the unit to obtain a cellular signal and start broadcasting wifi "properly" - who knows. But still, it's so dog-slow 90% of the time...
  15. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

This thing is still finicky as heck for me. 90% of the time it flat out doesn't work when I get in the car. Lately, it's been the car not being able to join the T2C unit's wifi, either saying that it couldn't obtain an IP address or flat out prompting me for the password (again and again), but...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Thanks - I was just about to post, asking what people's setups were, that don't have lag. I went for a drive today, and counted 30-35 seconds between updates (I'd skip a song, and be waiting 30-35s before the screen updated, including the map.) I'll need to look into making this change on my...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Great point. Did a "Erase All Content and Settings" reset this morning and am here to report the results - will update this as I go: 1) Performed a reset 2) Did NOT do a restore - so this was essentially a fresh phone. 3) Tested the T2C w/o SIM - CarPlay success! 4) Tested the T2C w/ SIM -...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

I’d agree, and might try this weekend. Just seems kind of ridiculous come to that though, to get this product to work. I guess it is literally a hack to get CarPlay. With my luck, one of my backups would carry over the odd behavior.
  19. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Didn’t work even when stickied to 2.4. No other CarPlay cars associated with the phone.
  20. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Yes, it’s updated to the latest firmware too. No other CarPlay cars, unfortunately. Maybe I’ll find a car dealership, but I certainly don’t want to waste a salesperson’s time (or turn up) I’m assuming it’s supposed to handoff from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi when CarPlay starts, but it never does...

I tried switching Wi-Fi to 2.4ghz and specifying a channel, still no luck.
  22. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

I'm guessing they mean: 1) remove the SIM card 2) connect to the T2C, in a browser, go to the settings page to toggle off bluetooth network sharing 3) restart the device
  23. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

It virtually never terminates the bluetooth connection between the phone and the T2C. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason for when it actually does (i.e. sometimes it terminates the bluetooth connection, but it's not because CarPlay started or the hotspot connected). As for the...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

CarPlay is not starting on my phone. It used to - that's the weird part. The T2C worked a couple of days ago, just laggy as heck and a bit finicky. But now: Car connects to T2C via wifi T2C connects to phone via hotspot (intermittently) Phone connects to car via bluetooth - it never transfers...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

No screen time passcode or VPN. You might be on to something here though. I tried with my wife's iPhone, and it worked (SIM-less, haven't tried with SIM.) Can't imagine why it won't work with mine though. Hers is an iPhone 12 on iOS16, mine is a iPhone 14 Pro Max also on iOS16. I've tried...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Yes, the new unit won't kick off CarPlay. The old one did (but oddly, no longer does). It connects to the phone, starts up and connects to the hotspot, but doesn't start CarPlay. I do wonder whether I'm somehow doing things in the wrong order - what's the likelihood that I got two defective...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

I must have the worst T2C luck in the world. Ordered and received a replacement unit. Finally got the AT&T SIM to work with the "phone" APN name. Now the new unit won't kick off CarPlay. Just bizarre. Did a factory reset, repaired bluetooth, renamed my phone (this helped last time, since I had a...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

I've ordered a new unit, just in case. In the meantime, I'm going to try a SIM in there instead of using the hotspot. Does anyone know working APN settings for AT&T? I've tried "phone" "broadband" "nxtgenphone" and the best I could get was the status screen momentarily showing connected, then...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Two major issues with this for me, and they've already been mentioned by others: 1) Lag - there's no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it's responsive, but most other times, it's several (10-15 at least) seconds behind. The map lags, the apps lag, touches don't get registered for a ridiculously...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

So far, it's confirmed that somehow the special character (a dash, so nothing unusual) in my iPhone's name was keeping it from kicking off the hotspot and CarPlay features. I removed the dash-character and it's now working as intended. However, I'm now learning that aside from the novelty of it...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

This thing is going back to Amazon. After I was finally able to get it to connect and display CarPlay yesterday, I tried again this morning and nothing. Tried a factory reset, tried the autoconnect toggle, tried resetting both bluetooth and wifi connections, nothing. Initially, it wouldn't...

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

Thanks. That worked for me. That or the ten more resets and messing with the settings. Strange how it's pretty much plug and play for some, and near impossible for others. I must've spent a good two plus hours on it.
  33. S

Aftermarket Tesla CarPlay and Android Auto Devices

This flat out won't work for me. Did everything as instructed. Checked to ensure that the phone is connected to the T2C unit via bluetooth, car to the T2C unit via wifi, hotspot on, CarPlay enabled, the tespush.com page comes up in the browser, signal led flashes blue/green indicating a...

    Wiki FSD Beta 10.4

I'm just waiting for the day the release notes tell me the car is reticulating splines.
  35. S

Any of you have 100/99 scores still not get any FSD till today?

Got my invite finally. Email just after midnight PT, installing now. Been at 100 for days, missing the last boat. Good luck to the rest who are still waiting, and good luck to me so my car doesn’t try to kill me as I try this.

    Elon: FSD Beta tweets

Heck, some of us are at 100 and have nothing.

Any of you have 100/99 scores still not get any FSD till today?

So despite having a legit 100, still no invitation - I wonder if I'm better off performing a reset to get a brand new 100 to get in on this. WTF.
  38. S

Any of you have 100/99 scores still not get any FSD till today?

I'm not who you were replying to, but fwiw I am at 100 and no invite. Incredibly disappointed, but not surprised.

Any of you have 100/99 scores still not get any FSD till today?

Ok, now I'm PISSED. Sitting at 100 and nothing. No email and it looks like a bunch just went out. I didn't game the system by un-enrolling, and have well over 100mi. NOTHING.
  40. S

Any of you have 100/99 scores still not get any FSD till today?

Yep. Opted in early AM the first day, well over 100mi. At 100 as of a couple of days ago and nothing still.

Anyone know if this is straightforward enough to get a shop to do this? (or know of any shops familiar enough with Teslas to do this in socal?)

    MagSafe Dashmount

Hmm I didn't notice that detail - the one I linked to is just plastic and is made for the Apple MagSafe charger to snap into place. (I don't have any need for a non-charging mount) -- either way it's a 17mm ball mount, so you could ostensibly attach all sort of things to it.

Another subwoofer option - NVX Audio

This is what I was afraid of. If they don't include detailed step by step instructions or some sort of wiring harness to bypass existing wiring, I'd be at a loss about what to do. I know my clumsy-clueless self would destroy something. I was hoping there'd at least be instructions like "find the...
