    DIY Tesla Drive Unit Repair

Yep probably just running down the stock they already have. I expect warranty repairs will keep getting T revision remans until they have exhausted their stockpile. I went through similar in Australia, Tesla only had T reman units available in stock. It was made clear to me that if it was a...

Replacing Out of Warranty Drive Unit and Now a New Harness???

If you're paying out of pocket then I'd try to avoid getting a reman drive unit. In my case I was originally quoted a reman T drive unit. I wasn't happy getting another motor with coolant leak problem and asked how much to get a new U unit and it basically came to same price. I just had to...

    Very Hot Garage

For the cells there's lower degradation at low SOC and low temperatures. Looking at my car (model S P85) I can see that the battery won't be actively cooled until the temperature hits 52 degrees. Car is currently at 53%. I think as the SOC rises the car will select a lower temperature to...

Battery Degradation and Care Worries Overblown?

Model S. To be fair the last motor was replaced in 2017 so it's had a reasonable life although far less than a typical ICE motor. The car is out of warranty so it was $10k to replace. Since I was paying they said it was ok to order in a new U revision motor which has a fix for the coolant...

Battery Degradation and Care Worries Overblown?

I think the one thing I've learnt is that age is a more important factor than mileage. In fact it seems the low mileage cars can encounter more problems sooner. The large drive units are particularly problematic. If you just look at the high mileage cars such as the 1.9million km car needing...

    Acceptable cell imbalance range?

I unplugged once it finished charging at 100%. There was a constant drain of around 250W so I assume the car would've started charging again after some hours if plugged in. There was an increase in capacity of around 2% (nominal capacity increased from 72kWh to 73.6kWh). Also a slight drop...

National and State Renewable Energy stats

That's quite amazing. All these people worried about EVs crashing the grid and yet consumption continues to drop. I guess most EV owners are getting solar to go with their car. Free fuel is such a drawcard. Thanks for all your hard work compiling these stats Vostok!

    Acceptable cell imbalance range?

Had a similar issue. Imbalance rose quite suddenly to 26-28mV. Advice from Tesla nowadays is to charge to 100% and let it sit for at least 6 hours to balance. I was watching the levels via SMT after charging to 100%. Balancing was slow, with imbalance reducing around 1mV per hour. It took...

P85D bricked hard reboot at dealer

I had a similar problem recently on 2023.32.7. Car unlocked, I jumped in and MCU dead. No way to reboot it. Then I found the car wasn't responding to the keyfob. I opened the app and it showed a weird error I hadn't seen before. Luckily I could open the frunk through the app. Then I took...

Why has Tesla's charging advice changed

I think the problem is there were lots of people who thought it was ok to leave the car sitting at 90% for long periods of time. High SOC for prolonged periods is what kills the batteries. If you need 80 or 90% for your daily use then it's fine to set that but try to ensure the charge finishes...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

It's only 6 years since 2170 was introduced. Tesla didn't start tinkering with the 85kWh packs until 7 years. Looking at degradation reports it seems quite a few people with 15% after 4 years. The highest I've seen was 15% after 2 years and that was in a person charging to 90% daily. I've...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

The fact Tesla are now changing this to 80% makes me think there are batteries dying before the warranty. Maybe lots of them. Why else would Tesla change the limit unless it was costing them money Wonder if this will be the only mitigation or if we see further changes in the coming years...

    Australian Model 3 Waiting Room

Well it could be worse. Ordered my first Tesla in 2011, was finally delivered in 2015. Paid for a Roadster in 2017, asked for a refund in 2021. Don't seem to have much luck ordering direct. Think my next Tesla will come from carsales ;) Aside from that it's good to see lots of people...

    Battery Imbalance after 8 years

Yeah I'm interested in this too. I haven't seen anyone mention what size imbalance becomes a problem. Or how fast it can progress from small imbalance to large imbalance. I have a 2014 P85 and battery warranty is up next month. One module is off by about .02V so charging will stop around 98%...

MCU2 Upgrde and no AM or FM radio

I found a lot of the fancy xmas displays this year broadcast music on FM with the lights synced to the music. One of the benefits of the tuner upgrade I guess. That and drive-ins. Also good to have a radio in bushfire season. Although $750 buys a lot of portable radios/batteries.

Is there any reason why my car's charging at 1 amp less than the capacity of the charger, everywhere?

I've just started having the same problem. Amp is off by 1 in both car and app. FW is current 2022.40.4.1 and app is up to date. Have checked with scan my tesla and the car appears to be drawing at the correct rate, so this is purely a cosmetic bug. May be a rounding problem (rounding down...

Tesla replacing ultrasonic sensors with Tesla Vision

Sure we might lose USS but perhaps it's being replaced with better sensors. A new radar has appeared in the parts catalog so it seems a change is underway. Maybe it'll work out better for parking. Not worth scrambling for a USS car if new sensors/HW4 are imminent.
  18. R

Tesla replacing ultrasonic sensors with Tesla Vision

It does seem crazy giving the blind spots. So the alternative is that they are removing USS because new sensors are being added and they may be better for parking. We've just seen a new higher resolution radar appear in the parts catalog. So it seems new sensors/HW4 are imminent.

Vendor Preventative Maintenance regarding Battery Failures in early Model S vehicles (2012-2014)

I checked my 2014 P85 too and found the same thankfully. Oct 2014 build 46k VIN. I'm questioning whether I extend it to the wheel well. Obviously draining on the penthouse was bad, but the engineers then chose a new location for it. Is there a reason they chose a spot that doesn't drain...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Or perhaps forward demand for electric cars in Europe is starting to crater. Who wants to own an electric car when you are facing blackouts and electricity rationing... May as well stick with the ICE a little longer. Musk hoping for the quick fix and everything getting back to normal.

Vendor Preventative Maintenance regarding Battery Failures in early Model S vehicles (2012-2014)

I wonder if we can get our supercharger speeds back again. We were told the lower charge speeds were to protect the battery/extend longevity. However it seems it's moisture that is killing the packs, not the cells getting stressed.

Pros and Cons of MCU 2 Upgrade?

I remember seeing a post by wk057 detailing the problem being a lack of standby power in the earlier cars (cars pre Q2-2015). Despite the excessive vampire drain with MCU2 I still consider the upgrade worth it. It's just something to be aware of and plan around.
  23. R

Pros and Cons of MCU 2 Upgrade?

I was initially pretty unhappy with the upgrade due to long delays finding the LTE signal when jumping in the car. This meant no connectivity for the first few minutes of a drive. The issue has been fixed in later firmwares and I think the MCU2 upgrade is pretty much perfect in 2022.16. I...

    Model X - 12volt battery died

Yeah is there a local supplier? I suspect waiting til the warning might be too late if you need to get it shipped from USA. I've always had a warning prior to failure and never ended up with a bricked car. I think the longest time I've left it was about 2 weeks between the warning and...

    Model X - 12volt battery died

Just got the 12V warning in my Model S and to book in for service. This will be the 5th replacement in 7.5 years. I've noticed vampire drain much higher after the MCU2 upgrade, which all gets cycled through the 12V.

Model S intermittently loses 4G/LTE/network connectivity while powered off

That would be my thought. Definitely a different issue as this bug results in no connection (line is through the LTE signal). If you're getting 1 bar in a strong signal area then I'd think they've done something to the antenna or broken the connection. Have updated my car to 2021.32.10. Bug...

Model S intermittently loses 4G/LTE/network connectivity while powered off

I'm glad it's fixed for you but it sounds like they may have flashed the device directly. Perhaps getting some customers to beta test the fix before a wider release? This connectivity issue has been driving me nuts as I do many short trips. I asked my local service center to scan bulletins...

3 phase charger but Tesla only uses 2 phases

Thanks for the update. I recently got the CCS2 upgrade and ever since I've had charging problems. Randomly tripping public chargers after 30mins-1hr. Went back to Tesla and they inspected all the wiring and assured me it was all ok and were able to get it to charge on a 22kW charger there...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

    MCU upgrade/replacement for early vehicles

Could happen with they way the AUD is improving. I also wonder if they'll include 5G in the coming years which may be a better time to do the upgrade. I've just had my EMMC replaced at 50,000km. While the MCU itself seemed to run ok I noticed that it would no longer save any settings. If I...

Does Tesla have a big math problem?

7.8 seconds is an impossibility. After 6.2 seconds the Tesla will have reached 100km/h. If they haven't crashed by 6.2 seconds they never will as both cars will be doing 100km/h. To verify the crash occurs at 4.595 seconds you can calculate the distance traveled by both vehicles in 4.595...

Does Tesla have a big math problem?

Exactly. There is 0 chance I'm pulling out 5 seconds in front of a truck doing 100km/h and assuming they will brake. Good luck to those who do. I value my cars and cargo too much.
  33. R

Does Tesla have a big math problem?

Probably. But most people wouldn't pull out in a situation that required the other car to take action in order to avoid a crash. They'd wait for a bigger gap. What's wrong with the math? It's basic first principles for two objects in motion. Perhaps the 80m range quoted by Tesla was...

    What's YOUR vampire drain?

Is Cabin Overheat Protection on? That can drain a fair bit of energy depending on climate and where the car is parked.

Battery drain - ~ 1L of gaz evaporating per day

It was a change with the older packs. Perhaps they don't trust the temperature sensor to be representative of all elements in the entire pack. Therefore they run cooling for many hours should you be at a high state of charge. Best way to avoid it is to only charge to 70% otherwise you're...

    Model 3 Reversing lights

Really hate the one light on the left side. Gets obscured with angle parking if you are next to a big vehicle/van. Reversing lights are to alert other drivers/pedestrians. Seems silly not to have two like most other cars.

    NHTSA Investigates Failing MCUs

Does the NHTSA consider effects in countries besides USA? In Australia when MCU fails it messes with the speedo. The speed display silently changes to miles/h instead of km/h This means if you are driving in a 40km/h zone the speed will show as 40 but the car is actually going 65km/h.

    MCU upgrade/replacement for early vehicles

Why push only to get it replaced with another buggy MCU1? MCU2 upgrade seems to be best path forward. It sucks to have to fork out some $ but you get a better system.

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Also worth noticing the capacity. wk057 got 102.4kWh for the 100 pack so we have 102.4kWh * (14/16) = 89.6 kWh. With 89.6 kWh it's probably also good as a 90kWh replacement, just change the labels ;)
  42. R

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Probably temperature. After you've finished charging the battery pack then starts to cool down and the voltage of the individual cells rise. If the car is using voltage as the main guestimate for SOC then it'll rise as the voltage rises. I think it's no coincidence that the fires started...

Charging to 90%, cooling fans stay on and drain battery

I've heard lowering the charge to 75% stops it. Probably not much point charging to 80% unless you're going to drive straight away as it'll drop a few % over the next few hours from the cooling/pumps

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

I know there is a slower charging profile that has been implemented but many people are seeing well below this. Seems like there is an additional condition that is causing the throttling. I'm wondering if that's what can be reversed with a low SOC as per the paper.
  45. R

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Interesting paper posted by jensk2 So has anyone tried leaving their car at 10% SOC for a month to see if it reverses the impact? Might bring back higher speeds at superchargers? I know it'd be a hassle but seems like Tesla aren't providing any alternatives at this point

Making the case for an Apple solution to the looming Tesla battery crisis

I don't even see why Tesla have to lose money on this. They could offer a new 85kWh replacement under recall (free) Or upgrade to new 100kWh for $15k Or upgrade to new 130kWh for $30k I think a lot of owners would choose to upgrade.... Could easily balance out those who choose not to

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Perhaps it was. I'm not sure of the exact version. I know it wasn't in 2019.16 and was definitely in 2019.24. May have been introduced somewhere in between.

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

His range would already be capped in 2019.16.3 if it was going to be. The supercharger reduction before/after 2019.24 was documented (with lots of screenshots) in the following thread: 85kWhr Model S reduced Supercharging rate reduction confirmed by TOCWA
  49. R

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

The only thing you'll have in 2019.16.3 is the potential for voltage capping (range reduction) as your battery ages. Reduced supercharger speeds came in 2019.24. Regen capping came in 2019.40

How good are Tesla’s in Australia’s extreme heat?

Never had an issue with the inside of the car in hot weather and it sure is nice to be able to cool it down remotely. The main issue is the door handles in the sun on a hot day. They become stupidly hot. Downright dangerous with kids....
