    Supercharger - Hamilton, TX

I had a strange experience yesterday driving from San Antonio to FW on US 281. The entire trip, the Hamilton Supercharger (all units) was marked as offline and unavailable in the car. I was starting to sweat bullets as I got further from Johnson City with range dropping fast, and I didn't want...

    Shorting Oil, Hedging Tesla

@jhm, this is not a direct reply but along similar lines. I'm looking at roof-top solar (so no axis tracking) at a particular location (so not necessarily generalizable), comparing solar production from (1) an optimum tilt to (2) a twice per year tilt adjustment, vs. (3) combined heating and...

Could bugs be causing (some) phantom braking?

There have been complaints to the NHTSA, and apparently at least one injury accident and one fatal accident linked to phantom braking. Anyone can report what they feel is unsafe behavior to the NHTSA, and those on X can bring up the issue with Elon. My car is five years old, and I've had the...

Could bugs be causing (some) phantom braking?

It's far worse than just plain cruise control. With cruise control, you maintain a set speed until you disconnect or hit something solid, and there is no braking for phantoms. I wish plain cruise control was an option.

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

That is a really useful chart...until you get to this part: We don't (yet) control the weather, so the worst-performing examples, including a 2018 Model 3 that only managed 65 percent of its range rating, took place with outside temperatures hovering around freezing. So the 2018 Model 3...

    Coronavirus

No, there wasn't, but lying about the efficacy of masks destroyed the credibility of officials that was sorely needed later. Mistrust of public health played a leading role in many unnecessary deaths later in the pandemic. The Deep State (if it existed) could not have better executed a plan to...

This NY Times editorial was published on March 17, 2020. Range Chart of Tesla Models

I believe that is a quirk of the EPA labeling. EPA don't care (apparently) if all versions of a particular model, though varying slightly in efficiency, are labeled the same. I'm not sure of the rules and procedures, but I would guess the label is based on either the least efficient or the most...

    Range Chart of Tesla Models

The RWD and AWD had the same rated range, but rather different real world efficiency. The RWD is more efficient by (looks at chart above) ~7%. Also, wheel diameter makes a difference, with 18" wheels with ugly wheel covers on taking the prize.

2023 M3 air conditioner using 70% of energy

Running the A/C with and without RECIRC on makes a significant difference in energy usage. AUTO will adjust RECIRC depending on the circumstances, but it usually ends up closing off outside air, which is much more energy efficient. However, that situation tends to lead to stinky A/C in more...

I don't think this is unusual. The BMS thought it was at 60% when charging stopped, and then, after calibrating, it decided it was really 57%. 3% difference is a little extreme, but not unheard of.

How long at 100% soc until battery damage?

Warranty costs for batteries, which kicks in only in cases of severe degradation, probably don't even figure in to Tesla's battery advice. My intuition (based on WWRPD--what would a rational person do) is that their battery advice is based on minimizing the totality of costs, including traction...

How long at 100% soc until battery damage?

Your battery will degrade far more (but still only a minor amount, say between 7% and 10% over its lifetime) from "the 80-90% I usually have it set to" than from the occasional charge to 100%. Look at the graph above and note where relative capacity starts to drop: around 50%-55% SOC. If you can...

Favor Low SoC or Small Cycles?

Or possibly with warranty expense, customer support expense, and rescuing stranded drivers expense.
