Should EVs Make Artificial Sounds at Low Speeds?

As much as I think it's really not necessary, I will say that I've both driven a LEAF and listened as one has driven by, and I don't find the sound offensive in general. On rare occasions, I've driven somewhere remote and really quiet, and there the lack of any propulsion sound is really quite...

    Amber turn signals spotted

Indeed. I hate all-red signals with a passion, because there are ambiguous states that take longer to interpret than the unambiguous use of distinct colors for braking and signaling. The case you cited (fog) is a counter-example of ambiguity, because you couldn't tell the front from the back...

    Amber turn signals spotted

They looked exactly like the photo TEG posted. I didn't have long enough to study them to notice the details like the lens color.

    Lighter Shade of Blue?

That seems much closer to the BMW Estoril blue. Gorgeous color! I would have chosen that in a heartbeat.

    Amber turn signals spotted

Greetings, I know that there was a lengthy thread about amber turn signals some time ago. I believe the conclusion was that they were not available nor would they be. And yet. The other day, I saw a Model S on the road with normal plates (not dealer or manufacturer plates), and it had...

    Gapless Playback

I have the sense that Tesla isn't taking the media playback very seriously. There are so many strange bugs and limitations that should be trivially fixed. For example, if you play a multi-disc album, the car ignores the "Disc #" tag, so you get the first track of one of the discs, then the...

How long to wait before OptiCoat / CQuartz?

A question for you guys with the various coated finishes: what's the standard procedure for washing the car once these have been applied? There's a waterless car cleaning place in Redwood City ("Eco Green Auto Clean"), and they had the gig to periodically clean all of the showroom cars at the...

Who's black Tesla is this in California?

In almost two years with the S, I have never used a public charger or parked in an EV spot. I've never needed to. Unfortunately, I'm afraid some EV drivers think that the EV parking spaces are a perk, sort of like the HOV stickers. The spaces are often in prime spots because that's where you...

    Rear-Ender accident in Palmdale - 7/4/14

Are you just assuming that the Honda was driving at the speed limit, or was that reported somewhere? Do we even know for sure that the Toyota was in motion at the time? It could, for example, have stalled. One scenario that has almost bitten me in the past is that I was driving along in the...

Do AIFF files play on the Studio Sound System

The metadata situation with music on USB sticks is ... puzzling. I did test AIFF (created with iTunes) at one point, and the metadata was correct, although I think the car fetched its own cover art over the air rather than using what was in the file. Also, beware. The car's player does not...

    Three slow chimes?

Ahhh. It could be either of the possibilities mentioned above -- I may have pressed the brake while the door was open, or the fob might have been pressed against my house keys in my pocket. I will attempt to reproduce the chimes deliberately with these actions and see what happens. In all...

    Three slow chimes?

Greetings. This evening, I when I got in my car, it played three slow chimes, and at least one of the signal flashers also blinked. I've heard the three-chime thing before, but this is the first time I've been parked where I could also see the reflection from the flash. I moved the car...

Do AIFF files play on the Studio Sound System

Let me put it this way: anybody who argues that FLAC (or ALAC) sounds different than WAV is either: Doing it wrong. Misinformed. Delusional. It would be equivalent to saying that if you created WAV files, then compressed them into a Zip archive to email them, and un-zipped them on the...

Nothing sounds as sweet as a nice V-12. But I sure wouldn't drive one every day.

    Specs change: 07/11

As far as I'm concerned, if this is actually their plan (to eliminate USB music storage), and if it's in favor of caching Google maps, then I would be okay with that. But, I sort of doubt it, because the car was advertised as having that feature, and in particular greater song storage was one...

Do AIFF files play on the Studio Sound System

Yes, AIFF plays fine. Just don't use Apple Lossless. It's the only format that I regularly use that the car won't currently play. (Or, at least not last time I tried...) I'm not sure why you're opposed to FLAC, unless like me you just don't want to deal with the hassle of something that...

Anybody with Signature Performance with Blue paint?

During the test drive events before the cars first shipped, Tesla had a blue Signature Performance car, with the Signature White interior. Man, it was sharp. If I could get a custom color, though, I would ask for the color Laurent got on his: First Model S to get a custom color after...

Car takes over 5 minutes to "TURN ON" after long term parking

I would report it to Ownership. It doesn't sound normal to me. I've left the car for a week at a time and it turned right on when I got back. In my case it was not parked at home so it was unplugged.

Preview of my Model S wrap

This is a car I would really like to see in person. Too bad I'm no the opposite coast.
  20. M

    Frunk, slight dent

I agree too -- the Model S needs a revision to the latch of the frunk. I've had to specifically instruct the local hand car wash (which cleans the cars for the Menlo Park showroom!!) how to do it properly. Twice. Plus, if you park the car nose in, it's extra difficult to do the two-handed...

From an experienced performance tuner and racer: "Best car I've ever driven."

There does seem to be a pattern when showing up at a car dealership in a Model S. When I dropped by my local Toyota dealership to deliver the title to the Prius they bought from me, the sales floor emptied out. :)

    SIRI Eyes Free

Yes, Siri is usable with any sort of BlueTooth, but the Eyes Free stuff is different in that it uses different logic to decide what commands are available, what things will be read aloud versus shown on screen, etc.

Horrible Service - 4 Service Trips No Fix Auto Present Door Handles

Well, it's getting OT for this thread, but I completely disagree about the express windows. I never actuate the express accidentally, but I appreciate the ability to quickly close my windows without having to keep a hand on the switches, and if it's a hot day, I also like two presses (2 fingers...

Email from Tesla regarding cooling 3rd row seats

I certainly hope that this means that they are planning some changes to the climate control system as well. It's far too fiddly to get a comfortable setting. I wish that I could save 'presets' based on certain combinations that I like for different conditions.

Poll: How many Tesla owners are also Apple users?

Exactly. The only non-Apple PC hardware I have ever personally purchased was for a special-purpose video recorder years ago. I value the tight integration that Apple is able to create between their hardware and software, and the ecosystem integration between their various devices.

I had the same thought when you mentioned that your handles are getting less responsive: perhaps your fob battery is low?

Menlo Park Service - Not a good start

I agree with vlsidude -- I would escalate until it gets to George Blankenship, at a minimum, and ideally to Elon directly. The practice of selling the loaners to random people is unacceptable. It's not fair to people who are in the queue, and it's not fair to owners. FWIW, Menlo worked on my...

    Interior Temperature Gauge?

I would really like the interior temperature, because my impression of the climate control is that it ramps the fan speed down much too soon. e.g., if I have the air conditioning on, I am often manually overriding the fan speed or artificially cranking down the temperature because I feel hot...

Just to add to the chorus. I've driven in various rainy weather without issue thus far.

Huh. I suppose it makes some sense, since they can't really control who comes on the tour as a guest or whatnot.

    Silver Model S...What's up?

IMO, the silver is very pretty in the sun, but it doesn't have as much metallic sparkle as some other silvers, especially from Mercedes. That sparkle tends to keep them looking interesting even when the ambient light isn't the right direction/intensity to cause nice highlights. I'm delighted...

Extremely Confused After Watching - Who Killed The Electric Car

I had an EV-1 for 2.5 years. I transferred the last 6 months of my lease to somebody who desperately wanted to drive one, even briefly, before they all went to the crusher. It was a very cool car, but it was definitely a bit of a science project. It did not have the feel of a real production...

Tesla head on collision with a Honda

Yes, it was posted earlier but it's well buried in the depths of the thread. I posted almost exactly the same frame grab on page 17, in fact. There is also a rather interesting photo posted to page 16 that shows a rear view of the car, but one in which you can deformation of the hood on the...

Major accident for me tonight (5/26) (New P85 arrives 7/8)

Years ago, I was headed out to lunch with a big group of friends from the office. Big enough group that it was two cars. My friend's car was first at the red light, and I was behind him. The light turned green, and he pulled into the intersection, and a woman clipped the front of his car in a...

Watch Model S get up to 133mph

I noticed that too, but I thought that it might be the software's way of showing the speed limiter in action -- basically the car is providing as much power as needed to maintain but not exceed the 130mph stated top speed.

Menlo Service Center Will Be Closing / Dividing Into Two

I guess this works out okay for me. I often drop by Menlo Park, but it's usually to ask a question or look at a feature or something, so those are more showroom activities than service center activities. The Sunnyvale location is close to my office, so it will actually be pretty convenient...

    Key fob cracking on top

Mine had a faint crack visible in it when it was basically brand new. So far, the top is still attached. I would happily trade it for a Panamera-style fob with visible buttons, but perhaps they'll be able to figure out how to keep the concealed look and make it more durable.
