Let’s use this thread to track Tesla’s amazing new battery tech in their 4680s and lithium refinery.

Teslas goal is an optimal range dry cell. The number 4680 is named from the mm dimensions.

The past:

Gen 1 early 2023
MY RWD Austin Gen 1 4680s ended use by Sept 2023. Not great charging curve in Gen 1. This was a wet cell.

Gen 2 are in the Cybertruck. Gen 2 has better range and charging curve. The MY RWD is now using 2170s. This 4680 is a NMC 811 chem of 80% nickel 10% Lithium 10% cobalt. There is info that this gen is currently moving to 955 chem.

There is a lot of pressure to eliminate cobalt.
LFP batteries have a big advantage of no cobalt.
There are many negative implications of using cobalt

Gen 3a might end up being a hybrid dry cell, a percentage wet, and chem of 973 moving to less cobalt. Advances in this gen could have another 10% increase in range. We expect this gen by mid 2024.

Gen 3b a fully dry cell could be another 10% boost in range to be delivered late 2024 or early 2025.

The lithium refinery is to be online this year.
The TX cathode plant is coming online this year.

From
The standpoint of full battery vertical integration, no one is as determined and potentially successful, outside of China, is Tesla.
Tesla is creating a USA blueprint for GM and Ford to follow.

As the IRA raises battery requirements higher, Tesla will allow for the max credits.

Please correct and aEd any all info above.
