Adhesive on wood veneer... Anyone gambled?

In my exhaustive search to find perfect phone mount placement I can’t escape that it’s likely around the wood paneling on driver side. Suction won’t hold so just wondering if anyone has previously taken the plunge on putting some sort of adhesive on and it not damaging finish or anything else. I have the light wood with cream interior finish if that matters.
