We have 2 fairly light ebikes, each weighing about 35-40 pounds. Should we get a Tesla roof rack or a hitch rack? And which bike rack should we get? We'd love your thoughts and experiences.
For a hitch rack, you'd need a hitch. The Model 3 doesn't officially support a hitch in the US (although Tesla provides them on the European Model 3 ).
You can get a third-party hitch for the Model 3, although there's a slight possibility that Tesla could refuse to provide warranty service on the suspension if they feel like the hitch was at fault.
If you already have a hitch, I'd go that route for the bike rack... lifting an eBike onto a roof rack seems difficult and potentially glass damaging (not to mention there have been instances of Tesla breaking the roof glass just installing a roof rack).
Do your homework on max weight loads though... even with a hitch and hitch rack, you can do damage to the rack and hitch if you exceed the supported weight.
