Buying a CPO vehicle. Ship it or fly and drive?

That's a good question and I'm not 100% certain. We've received the state tax credit back on 7 EVs so far (and will get another next year) but we purchased all of those in Colorado. For the one we were considering out-of-state delivery, we were going to do a "paper" delivery and purchase it in Colorado but pick it up in another state. Tesla must've cracked down on that and said they needed to ship it to us instead. Sorry I can't say for sure but you could email your county DMV and ask for clarification. It ended a couple of years ago, but you used to be able to easily get the tax credit on used cars imported from other states!

The form here doesn't mention you having to buy it in Colorado...just that it has to be initially titled and registered in Colorado: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/sites/default/files/Income69.pdf

I appreciate the answer. I've taken the tax credit on a Leaf, and want to be sure.

The other side of the question is: How willing is Tesla to ship a used inventory car?

Oops ... I mean Tesla shipping a NEW inventory car.
They've always shipped but they will charge you a fee depending on how far they have to ship it, from $500 to $5000 (Hawaii). Sometimes they will waive the extra shipping fee. Also, be sure to check with the local stores as they have inventory available that might not be listed online. After we ordered one from CA inventory, we ended up finding the same build here in Colorado but since we'd already done the paperwork on the CA car, we just waited for it to arrive and bought it. How long did it take from clicking BUY till actual delivery day?
The reason I'm asking as I pushed that BUY button yesterday.

i Clicked buy on a Monday at noon, by Monday 6pm PST i received a call from a sale rep at Tesla, I filled out all the required info that night purchase insurance uploaded all documents. By Tuesday around 1p.m I received another call from the delivery specialist telling me all information was correct. By Friday I got the sale doc by email so I can apply for financing with my credit union. I didnt hear anything for 2 weeks. then I get a call on a Thursday telling me my car was ready to be pick up. I told him I couldnt pick it up until the next week because I had to book a flight. so over all 3 weeks total time from when I click buy and put down the $2500 deposit to when the car was ready to be pick up.

Well,

All went well so far. I flew out Monday and purchased the car Tuesday morning. I was there for 45 minutes or so as we finalized the sale and I received the Model S introduction and how to. The condition of the car was immaculate. I was very pleased. I drove out of there 11am Tuesday morning and headed East to South Carolina. I am almost home. I am at a Supercharger in Alabama.

The only hinky thing was the temporary license plate or lack thereof. Apparently Nevada does not have temporary plates. They use what is called a 15 day Drive Away Permit which is affixed to the front bottom right windshield. So, needless to say driving without a license plate was uncomfortable. I got pulled over in the Texas Panhandle by the Texas Highway Patrol. The officer was very nice and asked a lot about the Tesla. What made it very uncomfortable is that I had NO paperwork proving I purchased the car. Tesla does not do paperwork. So, I was driving a car without a license plate and no proof of ownership other than showing the officer my app on the phone.lol Anyway he gave me a written warning without a fine. It put me in the system for Texas in case I got pulled over again. Which I did not.

Crossing my fingers that Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina don't pull me over.

That's crazy. Having no Paperwork, and no Plates I would be very vigilant of any cops. Lucky that the cop gave you a written warning. They have the right to impound your car if they deem it suspicious enough. This also makes me think that any criminal can have a spoofed proof of purchase on their phone and get away with a stolen car. Just depends on the cop and the individual really I guess. Have a safe rest of your drive!
