I probably went a bit overboard in my exchange with him on his facebook page but I ended with this:

You could redeem yourself. Here's a top-ten list of the most compelling reasons why we should be converting to all-electric cars as fast as possible (in no particular order):

10] It's much cheaper to charge an electric car than fill a gas tank. Per mile, a Tesla Roadster costs $0.03 (3 cents) in electricity to operate, while a 24 mile-per-gallon car costs $0.16 (16 cents) at $4 per gallon.

9] Electric cars have a zero-carbon footprint. The emit no pollution whatsoever.

8] Electric cars can be charged using completely pollution-free sources. When charged by solar cells, wind, hydroelectric or nuclear power, there is absolutely no hydrocarbon or CO2 pollution emitted in any part of the energy path.

7] Because of regenerative braking (power put back into the battery when slowing down), brakes in electric cars are used so infrequently that the pads and rotors might never need to be changed.

6] The most exotic materials necessary to build electric cars are used in small quantities, in abundant supply and can easily be recycled. For example, there's about $100 worth of lithium in a battery pack that has a 245 mile range. Lithium and oil are tied together... if oil prices triple, driving 10,000 miles a year will cost $3200 more per year in a car that gets 24 miles per gallon. The cost of electricity will not be affected, however, and the cost for lithium to replace a battery pack (done once every 7-10 years) will increase by only $200, which is only $20 per year. During that same period, you'll pay $32,000 more for your gas.

5] The motors in electric cars have two moving parts... the bearings on either end of the rotor, which will last a lifetime. The maintenance for the motor is essentially zero. There's no oil to change.

4] Electric cars produce little noise (silent at stop), no smells or smog whatsoever. Congested freeways filled with electric cars will be nearly silent and odor-free.

2] Electric cars can be fast and have amazing performance. The 2011 Tesla Roadster Sport 2.5 goes 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, has a 245 mile range and has a top speed of 125mph. According to Edmunds.com, it comes in third in the top 10 fastest cars of 2011, just behind the Porsche 911 turbo.

1] The US has never had to go to war over electricity and probably never will. All sources are available in North America. The war tax for foreign oil over the last 11 years has increased the price of gasoline by a whopping $4 per gallon, but it's payed as income tax, not at the pump. That means gas actually costs US consumers twice as much as it seems to. And there's the lives lost... none of our brave servicemen and women were killed or injured over electricity during that same period.
