Direct Airflow up Vs Defrost

I just got my Model 3 and I noticed in the climate control settings there's 3 options for where to direct the airflow: face, feet, or up. What is the difference between direct airflow up and the defrost button (blue mode, not red)?

On almost any modern car, defrost mode is just a shortcut/preset to make things easy if your windshield fogs up while you're driving.

If you were to set it using manual controls, you would:

1) Set the temperature you want
2) Turn on the A/C to dry the air
3) Select the upper vents
4) Select a medium-to-high fan speed

Got it, thanks! I did notice that it turned the AC on when using the preset, but for my case that wasn't entirely necessary. So then direct airflow up is what I did and seemed to work. That makes a lot more sense.
