I've got a temporary home charging set up using the 120 gfi plug in the garage, but every couple of hours last night the gfi tripped. not something I expected and pretty random seeming. is that unusual ?

What brand of GFCI receptacle is it?
We have seen this fairly often. Search the forums (google can help) and there are many threads on it.
Some have replaced the GFCI receptacles and that has solved it. I think some have reported that the Eaton ones are less likely to trip than the Leviton ones.
