It is similar to (and replaced) Dolby Surround, without the licensing fees to DolbyLabs I presume. It enhances the stereo effect a little. Standard or high just gives you two degrees of “enhancement.” Personally, I like it. Your opinion may vary depending on what you listen to. I guess that is why you can turn it off.
