A few notes
1. I wouldn't underestimate Elon in this race. He has yet to release a "lightweight drag special Model S" and clearly enjoys releasing cars that hit specific milestones to beat supercars.
2. I'm sure over the last few years there were more than a few conversations at Dodge, etc that ended with "we will absolutely be able to beat the Tesla...". After you greenlight a couple of failed attempts someone gets fired and the rest hide.
3. Most guys (almost all men) who buy high end car were once boys who loved cars. The 8 year olds that I know are much less impressed by Ferrari since they can't beat a Tesla. This isn't lost on 60 yr old boys.
4. The Model 3 is much lighter with new battery chemistry. What an AWD L+ version could do is probably unknown beyond a relatively small circle at Tesla.
