Blog Musk Says Tesla Will Do Advertising as Art

Tesla has traditionally eschewed advertising, but it seems they’re now giving it some thought.

Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Twitter that Tesla should “eventually” produce some “high quality media.”

Tesla already receives a tremendous amount of earned media, mostly headlines on its continually improving technology and the antics of Musk. There’s news nearly every day about the company, which delivers consumer eyeballs on the brand without dishing out the cash for advertising.

Musk suggested that the potential media would be more of an effort for “art/communication/entertainment” rather than purely to sell cars.

Tesla previously held a contest called Project Loveday that invited fans to create videos featuring the company’s products.

If Tesla decided to advertise, the best approach would be "education". Maybe the best start would be with "can your electric car do this?", followed by a simple demonstration. Remember, the public can only learn one thing at a time, and any competition may be forced to lie with the answer. Now we have them just where we want them.

It's about market share. Why would you try to sell EVs to EV owners who make up like 1% of the car owning consumer? You need to issue a beat down on ICE vehicles as it will have a better ROI. It starts by dispelling the myths that most all consumers still think of as fact when it comes to EVs. If Tesla never tries to shoot down the made up BS then the general consumer will just see it as fact. I still talk to people who think that there's no place to charge these cars on the daily basis. Daily. This needs to end. Tesla is firmly in position to take on EVERYONE at this point, not just other niche EV owners. They need to capitalize on this and shift the general public's thinking on EVs as a whole. They already build the best car on the road... and nobody knows. That's the hurdle that proper marketing overcomes.
