Odd Ac Vent Behavior

When we have the AC running on our MX, basically no air comes out of one of the vents (the one above and to the left of the glove compartment) - unless we actively turn on the option to recirculate the cabin air. It doesn't matter how we adjust the temperature or the fan or whether we have it set to "sync" the driver and passenger side temperatures, or tell it to make the passenger side 10 degrees cooler than the driver's side. That one vent basically puts out no air unless it's set to recirculate. Is this a flaw with ours that could be fixed with service? We're going to be driving the car from Boston to San Francisco in the dead of summer, and don't want to have to worry that there's something wrong with the AC.
