Protect headrest from baby mirror straps

I'm getting a mirror for my rear headrest so I can see my baby (in rear facing carseat) while driving. The mirror has to be strapped TIGHT to the headrest to be safe - but I'm worried it'll wreck the headrest. What do y'all think I should do to protect the headrest from the strap?

rather than strap onto the headrest, can you strap onto the connectors of the headrest (the 2 poles stick out from the headrest)?
