SpaceX has signed a private customer for the first BFR launch to the Moon, the company said Thursday.
The name of the person who will be the first commercial space passenger will be announced Sept. 17, according to a tweet from SpaceX.
Chief Executive Elon Musk was asked on Twitter if he will be the first passenger. He replied with an emoji of a Japanese flag, seemingly indicating that the passenger will be Japanese.
“Only 24 humans have been to the Moon in history,” SpaceX said in a later tweet. “No one has visited since the last Apollo mission in 1972.”
SpaceX also shared a rendering of an updated BFR spaceship performing a burn around the Moon. Musk said on Twitter that the image is of the next-generation SpaceX rocket.
The full announcement will be livestreamed on the company’s website at 6 p.m. PDT on Monday.
