Had the same exact problem/sound for months, but only in reverse and at low speeds. No amount of 'hard braking' helped, and it just seemed to be getting worse over time. I was considering the possibility of my pads being worn down to the warning strip, but there was only one way to find out...
Removed the front wheels, cleaned and lubricated the pad edges/pins, reinstalled. Just like that, all low speed squealing was GONE.
I can't speak for every case, but for me, this was resolved by the slide/pin related components. Not at all pad/rotor surface related (IMO, this is a very different/distinct sound).
