Tesla Unlocks Range for Owners in Path of Wildfires

As wildfires continue to threaten California, Tesla said it will extend the range of cars in the affected areas.

Vehicles with software-limited battery packs will be able to unlock the battery’s full capability.

Chief Executive Elon Musk tweeted the news Monday. Further, he said Tesla will “do what we can for anyplace affected by natural disasters.”

Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate as about a dozen fires spread around the state.

Tesla previously unlocked range for Californians impacted by wildfires, as well as for owners escaping hurricane-affected areas.

Ahead of Pacific General & Electric’s plan to cut power in areas of Northern California to prevent wildfires, Tesla sent out an in-car alert to owners reminding them to charge their vehicles. The company also installed Powerpacks in the areas affected to keep charging stations online.
