So, I’ve got an order in on a tri-motor CT. Cost will be under $70K. Do we think Tesla will add a tri-motor option to the Model S without us having to pay upwards of $130K for the Plaid ?
It’s too early for anyone to know but I wouldn’t think so. Why would anyone go with the tri motor if they also don’t want performance? Is the dual motor not fast enough?
Maybe. They might just choose to reduce the performance of the non-plaid version. This is what they did with the 3 and Y performance vs. dual motor - they just nerfed the power and took out track mode.

Only for the initial non-performance 3s to save on parts logistics overhead with a different part number. The Y and current 3 have a different rear motor for the non-P versions.
Adding a whole third motor would be a huge cost - the opposite of the reason they did it on the 3.
