Trunk Latch Issue

Not sure where to post this as I’m recently having this issue with both 2015 MS and 2016 MX…

Is anyone having issues with the trunk latch not engaging properly? It’s almost like the second latch doesn’t engage. Randomly, if I close the trunk it clicks but the second engagement (where it tightens down) doesn’t engage. Also, I’ve opened both MX and MS and it pops slightly, but doesn’t lift, and if I go to lift, it closes down the second latch engagement on my fingers instead of lifting.

As it’s happening the same on two different Teslas, I’m wondering if it could be firmware-related (just updated both to 2023.2.12). About to schedule a mobile appointment for the MS and talk to the tech about it happening on the MX also…

Sounds like the very common cinching motor failure on both.

You were exactly right. Replaced cinching motor. Fixed it, though I thought it was a true soft close (it can close hard without the cinching motor taking over). Thanks!

Did you do it yourself?

All three times mine failed the rear hatch was jammed in the partially closed state and I was unable to free it, so I had to take it into the SC for repairs.

No, had mobile service come out and fix it.
