2023 Summary Statistics

The following totals should tally with the supercharge.info database and where possible reference information posted on TMC and other public forums.

Total UK sites at year end: 126 (56 V2, 58 V3, 6 V4, 5 mixed V2 + V3, 1 mixed V3 + V4)
Total UK commissioned stalls at year end: 1297 (508 V2 + 711 V3 + 78 V4)

New Ireland sites: 0
Total new sites, bays: 0, 4*
Total Ireland sites at year end: 9 (5 V2, 4 V3)
Total Ireland commissioned stalls at year end: 56 (34 V2 + 22 V3)
*No new supercharger construction took place in Ireland in 2023 but 4 previously-built stalls at Athenry were commissioned (taking the site total to 8 stalls).

2023 Miscellaneous Highlights

The total of 20 new UK sites is a new calendar year record (beating the 2021 record of 18, matched in 2022) and 314 (290 net) new live bays beats the 2022 record of 219. The majority of new sites were in the Midlands and South/South East of England. Blyth was the most northerly supercharger to open in England; in Wales, Carmarthen and Swansea extended coverage in South Wales; in Scotland, Heartlands was the only new addition, a small 4 stall site in the Central Belt. There were no new site openings (or construction) on the island of Ireland.

Fleet Southbound finally opened after at least 2,201 days under construction: a UK, if not world, record (the site was constructed in September 2017 but mothballed due to power supply issues).

2023 saw the introduction of V4 stalls in the UK with features including longer charge cables and contactless payment terminals. To date, the charger cabinets supplying power to the stalls appear to be the same as the V3 versions. The first V4 stalls were commissioned at the Tottenham Service Centre in August. By the end of 2024, 8 sites had V4 stalls (6 new and 2 expansions). The remainder of new sites which opened after Tottenham were all V4, although at least 10 V3 sites were under construction by year end. Pease Pottage is currently the only V4 site not open to non-Tesla's.

Following site expansions, Exeter is now the largest UK supercharger with 32 V3 stalls followed by Rugby with 28 V3. Other expansions at popular locations took place at Tebay - Southbound (now 12 V3), Trentham (now 8 V3 + 10 V4) and Lifton (now 16 V4); the latter two sites are also now available to non-Tesla's.

An additional 18 UK sites are now open to non-Tesla's in the UK bringing the total to 34; in 2023, 9 of the 20 new sites are open to all and a further 9 pre-existing sites were opened up.

In contrast there was no new supercharger construction in Ireland. Four pre-existing stalls were commissioned at Athenry; in addition this site and Enfield were
opened up to non-Tesla's.

2023 Review of Tesla's UK "Coming Soon" Pins

Tesla updated their "coming soon" map markers in mid February, removing 18 and adding 17 to leave a total of 49. Unlike in previous years, marker positions and target opening dates were not subsequently updated except for a handful of additions and removals. Additional markers for supercharging voting winners were added for Bangor (July) and Hull (October). Washington N was added on or before October. One of two Birch markers was removed and the Solihull marker was removed after the service centre opened (but superchargers are under construction there). "Coming soon" markers for sites which opened during the year were converted to conventional supercharger markers although by year end the coming soon markers for Merry Hill and Pease Pottage were still present in addition to their new supercharger markers.

14 of the 20 new UK sites had pre-existing markers and of these 11 were on or ahead of schedule in terms of target opening dates. Target opening dates were not updated after February so their accuracy could be expected to decrease with time, but Tesla's markers have historically been best viewed as a rough guide rather than a specific plan.
