OK, I am surprised. Weirdly, this procedure seems to have worked. It did take about 20 minutes for the process and the car rebooted at least 7 times in the process (I lost count), but it does seem to have solved the problem--at least as of yesterday. I haven't driven yet today so can't be sure...
