Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Ford has already stopped production of many sedans which is likely a part of the move to EVs. Dump the less profitable product lines to be leaner for introducing the new EVs. Yeah, they will have to phase out ICE, but not until they sell at lower volumes. Ford isn't dropping the F150 any time...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Why do you think Tesla can ramp up production at any rate they choose? They are limited by their starting size. The bigger players don't have that limitation. For Tesla, sure. Why do you think this is the bottleneck for everyone else? Are you referring to global limitations? I've read...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I just want to say that there is little about the Tesla that puts it in the same class as a Mercedes or a Lexus other than the drive line. Once everyone is making EVs there won't be much to differentiate a Tesla and with their various issues, won't be able to sell against the established...

Yeah, I read that. Soooo.... When are they going to make the "less expensive" vehicles? I still think Tesla won't be able to grow quickly enough by using the compounding of reinvesting their profit mostly because the profit just isn't high enough. So far there have been essentially no...

If Tesla does that it won't be able to compete in five years or so. There are advancements in batteries that will drop the price in five years. Heck, just the shear volume of manufacturing will drop the costs for the really big players. If Tesla is selling a million a year and other makers...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

The issue you fail to grasp is that the majors have huge amounts of capital, money and experience building lots and lots of cars. Tesla had to learn how to build EVs, now they are learning how to build mass market cars, something the majors have been doing for a long, long time. But the real...

Approvals are for your product. Ever hear of UL? Not required, but fail to get that and have a fire and you are in trouble. It's not cheap. Emissions testing for FCC approval is required. Also very not cheap. Even if you are going to amortize these costs you need to pick a number and...

Winter driving advice, winter tire choices, etc.

Help what??? There is no problem to help. There are several reasons for charging your car before you drive, mostly because you want to warm the car and the battery before you drive. Why not help the car/battery be warm while you drive? Doesn't the BMS take care of this? You do realize...

Hell, I don't need any more power. I keep the car in sport mode because it feels like ludicrous mode is dangerous. I could use 5% more range! How about a range improvement Elon?
  16. E

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

But is that going to be much of a significant factor??? Yes, some will do it, but mostly people will wait until they need a new car. In fact, I think it may be the opposite where people wait, holding onto their gasoline friend until EVs aren't such strange ducks and they see they don't...

When should I place my order to get a 2020?

That's not so common for other car makers either. I had a 1997 T100 and Toyota had made major changes to the innards midyear so that I had to use the serial number to make sure I got various parts right. Alternator, water pump, clutch, the list goes on. With my Tundra I have to use the...

Distraught by rapid loss of maximum battery storage

There are lots of places where charging has to be planned. The problem is not really trips, but daily driving if you aren't at home or can't charge at home. Every week I drive out of state where Supercharging is 25 miles away in heavy traffic and a crowded station. This weekend I got a few...

How do you exceed the limit??? The limit is imposed by the car. It prevents regen from charging the battery beyond a safe rate.
  20. E

Winter driving advice, winter tire choices, etc.

More likely Tesla protects the battery and prevents it from being damaged by not charging or charging at a rate appropriate for the temperature. I'm not sure why you have it in your head that damage has to happen when the battery is not charged until it warms up enough to be charged.

    Cheap Charge Meter Design

"Conventional" current vs. electron current. Before electrons were known to be the carriers of charge the + and - signs were used for charge and by "convention" the positive current flow was adopted. There is the issue. The wall "unit" (by which I assume you mean EVSE) can do everything your...

We've been having cold enough nights that in the AM the regen is limited. The other day I drove a few miles and the regen limit started to ease. Then the icon came on warning of limited regen. Why would this come on only after driving some miles so the regen limit was nearly off???

Winter driving advice, winter tire choices, etc.

I haven't studied the manual, but I'm pretty sure the chance of plating your battery anode at any time is virtually zero. The BMS knows the temperature of the batteries and limits the charging rates accordingly. I'm pretty sure the BMS warms the battery before it would charge it if plating is...

I can't see that happening. Yeah, there is enough Tesla frenzy that they are selling everything they can make, but I'm pretty sure the other 99% of car owners see them as transportation and will wait for EVs to get some track record at the standard price range before they jump on the bandwagon...

I agree with your points about the summon feature mostly. I don't think any third parties that aren't directly involved (DMV, state legislature, your insurance company...) would do anything like banning the use of summon. They don't have an effective way of enforcing that anyway. But... I...

    Supercharger - Frederick, MD

1+ I had to charge at Gaithersburg tonight. All through the drive I watched and it was 2 of 12 free until shortly before I arrived it went to 4 of 12 free. On arrival 6 of 12 were free and I got a slot which gave me 102 kW charge rate. I didn't see any pairs that were both free. Actually...

I put it back in today and it still isn't working. Guess I'll be shopping for a new drive now. This one was 16 GB, be looking for at least 32, maybe more. But it has to be a tiny unit so it doesn't stick out of the USB socket very far. This one was nice in that it was sort of short, but very...

Yeah, that greatly depends on the drive as much as the driver. I used to really work my T100 with a clutch. I'd take it out of gear to coast before stops. I do the same in the model X when I can, but it's not very often really. Most of the time the autopilot is charging ahead and I have to...

So you aren't talking about turning down the regen. You are just saying that, like with every other car on the planet, if you drive carefully and don't speed up so much when you will be slowing down shortly you can save on fuel? Yes, that is correct. I don't see how that makes the...

Charging the battery warms it up. I'm not certain what goes on with some of the indicators. Today I started a trip with significant regen limitation. After about half an hour the regen is much less limited, but that's when the "!" comes on next to the regen limited dashed line. What does...

Ground is typically the minus lead. Why would you think otherwise? In a digital 5 volt system the 5V rail is positive and the ground is negative. Same in a 12 volt auto or nearly any other system other than ECL logic perhaps where the ground is the positive rail and the negative rail is the...

Holy crap! I don't think I pay 14 cents/kWh on the regular plan here. I'm currently on a TOU plan that gives me about 8 cents/kWh off peak and either 38 cents in summer or 20 cents the rest of the year at peak times. Summer peak is 3 to 7 PM and otherwise 6 to 9 AM and 5 to 8 PM. I have my...

Before you go shopping, if this drive worked before, try formatting it in your PC and retrying it. That number isn't adequate to buy a drive you know will work. I just tested my drive and depending on the block size written, the speeds were anywhere between 10 MB/s and 0.32 MB/s. It worked...

I have the heated steering wheel and use the seat warmer, but that doesn't keep my legs warm. In fact they are even cold when the heater is on low. I think there is an air leak in the door, but it's not enough to feel with your hand and it's rather dangerous to explore while driving. So I...

My experience is that it takes a pretty fair amount of time to get regen back fully. The max reduction is pretty severe and if you are used to regen, pretty dangerous. That's the biggest reason to not charge to 100%. In the cold you are stuck unless you preheat or have a warm garage. I...

BTW, unless you are going downhill, you can't regen without losing speed, but let's not quibble about that since it is not the point. There is no valid reason I can think of why turning regen off or down would save energy. Why would regen be operating if you don't want to slow the car or...
