    Roadster rear toe links

Thank you for your observations on this. I just talked to my BMW mechanic of 27 years who I trust implicitly. He says he sees this all the time (with BMWs of course) -- that one way to address it is to take it to a suspension specialist who will carefully heat up the parts and then try to work...

Mysterious "goo" suddenly appeared around the binnacle

Under the binnacle toward the front of it, there is a plastic footing or brace of with a surface area of maybe 1-1/2 inches by 1/2 inch, that has Velcro stuck to it. The other side of the Velcro is stuck to the dash and the plastic footing keeps the front part of the binnacle down. My surmise...

    Roadster rear toe links

I finally got my roadster into the Tesla service center. I am told that the alignment was out of whack. But, when they tried to adjust the tie rods, they found that both of them and the control arms were seized and cannot be adjusted. Rather they must be replaced. I have to wonder if there...

Invested $7K into my Roadster. Here’s what I got:

Take a look at this thread from about three years ago: Squeaks, Rattles and Sound-Deadening One update: I had the most annoying noise which I would feel in the steering wheel every bump I went over. Turned out it was the connection for the trip odometer reset which was hitting the bottom...

Idea for dealing with the Roadster's "Hoovering"

Well over two years ago, I wrapped my blower motor and squirrel cage blower in "Gutter Guard". I would know stuff was being sucked up into the fans previously because wet leaves would get in there and cause an imbalance and shaking of the fans. So far with the "Gutter Guard" installed, I have...

    12v dead? Can't start car.

So happy it now works! What I meant by arming and disarming the alarm was to simply use the key fob in the normal way to do so. Sorry I made it sound more complicated than I meant it to be.

    12v dead? Can't start car.

I had a similar unsettling condition several months ago. Best I could determine, I somehow activated the alarm system with the key fob (or failed to un-activate it when returning to the car) but was still able to open the door without the alarm going off. The car appeared "dead" . Arming the...

    Roadster rear toe links

An alignment has never been done since I purchased the car new so it is likely time for it. Is this something that a regular shop can do, or is it advisable to have Tesla do it (and does every Tesla service center have an alignment machine or is this something they contract out)?

    Roadster rear toe links

Somewhat reassuring, when I jacked up the rear and looked for horizontal play in each rear wheel, there is none. Even so, I think I will have Tesla look at the rear suspension the next time it is in for service. I need to take it in to have a tire pressure monitor replaced even though at this...

    Roadster rear toe links

In the past six months or so, I have noted a squirrelly or uncertain feeling from the rear suspension, particularly on wet or icy surfaces, that I do not recall experiencing before (almost as if the rear of the car is experiencing oversteer even though I am travelling in a straight line). My...

    Replacement of Alpine IVA-NAV-10

It was on at a moderately high volume but not measuring the current draw of the outboard HD radio and Sirius/XM modules. The Alpine, and anything else that will be put into the Roadster 2.5, has a power amp behind it so audio volume should not greatly impact current draw. Pioneer, when...

    Replacement of Alpine IVA-NAV-10

That is a hefty current draw. It could be an issue. Below is what I noted in my first post above as the power measurements on the OEM Alpine unit:

    Replacement of Alpine IVA-NAV-10

Also, if you want to order from Tesla a new radio wiring harness to adapt to a different radio (so the original wiring harness is not altered but rather a replacement for it is fashioned for the new radio), here is the part number and the cost I paid in 2014:

OVMS blocked on low-cost AT&T plans

UPDATE: FCC Complaint Filed Regarding AT&T As I reported above at OVMS blocked on low-cost ATT plans - Page 6 I filed an FCC complaint against AT&T for cutting off the data on their low cost pre-pay plan to OVMS users. I have now been back and forth with AT&T regarding the FCC complaint...

    Brake Pads

I really appreciate this discussion. Replacement of my Roadster's brake pads with something better has been on my to-do list for a long time. I started to order the AX6s based upon this discussion thread but I asked THMotorsports who is a Carbontech dealer about this and this is what Mike...

OVMS blocked on low-cost AT&T plans

FCC Complaint Regarding AT&T The more I thought about this situation, the more irritated I became at AT&T's action blocking OVMS content on their PayGo plans. To me, the essence of the FCC"s recent net neutrality action is that data is neutral and should not be blocked based upon content...

OVMS blocked on low-cost AT&T plans

This could be an FCC "Net Neutrality" violation by AT&T. Can anyone specifically identify what data is being blocked? The essence of net neutrality is that data should not be blocked based upon its content. Is that what is happening here?

    Driving in heavy rain

Back in my BMW E34 M5 days when the door rubber would squeak, I would swear by Gummi Pflege. I have not used it recently on my Roadster as I ran out but this reminds me I need to order more. Silicone lube, while doing the trick, might end up being very messy. Gummi Pflege is made exactly for...

HPWC / UMC2 to Roadster adapter

Try holding in the thumb latch on the CAN-SR as the charger connection is plugged in and keep holding it in for another second or two before releasing. That seemed to cure the red-light external charging fault that I got at several destination chargers.

    Power Trunk

I do not mean to sound snarky here but what you observe regarding the closing of the trunk is just one of many little annoyances that you will encounter during your euphoric ownership and driving of your new roadster. After four years of Roadster ownership and using it as a daily driver, here...

    Rear Cooling Fans

If there is vibration with the loud noise, then it is likely that there are leaves or other debris inside the fan squirrel cages causing an imbalance to the spinning fans. Cleaning whatever got in there can do wonders for quieting things down.

HPWC / UMC2 to Roadster adapter

    Tesla Destination Chargers

I have been noticing in the past few months the proliferation of dedicated 80 amp Tesla charging stations at hotels and B&Bs within "road trip" driving distance in the Washington, DC area. This weekend, we took a road trip to North Fork Mountain Inn in West Virginia that now has an 80 amp...

12V wiring diagram - I want the power windows without ignition on

The circuit that does stay on for several minutes in the Roadster after the ignition key is removed is the 12 volt circuit from the lighter plug. If I was to try to do what you want to do, i would completely disconnect the 12 volts running to the power windows switches, and try running the...

Manual - Dashcam with constant 12v power

75% Failure Rate with Public (J1772) Charging Stations

My failsafe on road trips has always been the 110 volt charging cable. If you are staying somewhere over the weekend, at a current draw of 12 amps the Roadster will eventually charge in 35 hours or so. The 110 volt charging cable, coupled with a really heavy duty extension cable, may be...

Did my own annual Maintenance found my lower blower shroud broken before removing it.

Unavailability of Tesla Parts Lists/Diagrams and Service Manuals

This above is a quote from the thread: Tailgate Release Actuator Issue - Page 2. The refusal of Tesla to provide parts listings and diagrams, and service manuals, is troubling. I just wrote this below to an FTC blog post on the subject of Tesla (Direct-to-consumer auto sales: It’s not...

    Roadster Rear Blower Maintenance

Apartment Living and Parking/Charging your Tesla

That's easy. Put a good set of winter tires on it and continue the driving fun. The roadster does just fine in snow and ice with winter tires as long as it is not being driven in 5+ inches of new snow which could be an issue due to its height off the ground.

    Tailgate Release Actuator Issue

Yes, the actuator clicks. By "release hasps" are you referring to the two hasps on each side of the car? If so, I am pretty sure each of those is OK although I could be wrong about that. Rather, the hasps react as if the cable running to each has stretched or lengthened, or the actuator...

    Tailgate Release Actuator Issue

    EU brake light vs US

Before going to all of this Arduino/accelerometer effort described above, I would check that there is not some unused or alternate output pin on whatever module controls the brake lights that is connected to the brake lights in the US, but is connected to another output pin in the EU. I have no...

The on/off of the 12V outlet

I do not know if this will help but the one circuit I found which stays on all the time is the circuit in the fuse box for the alarm. Just put an "add-a-fuse" tap on it with an additional fuse if you want Another thing to try if you tap it so it gets continuous power is a battery discharge...

    OVMS and Homelink

Mine works reliably about 95% of the time. It is one of the great things about OVMS. I cannot figure why it does not work the other 5% of the time. I recall that I did not put in a radius but kept the default. I suggest trying the default radius to see if it works. The default radius...

    little Roadster mysteries

    Weak AM Reception

Completely normal, and there is nothing that can be done about it. It is the combination of a lack of noise damping and filtering on the roadster motor and associated electronics, and the lack of a metal body and frame acting as a ground plance for the antenna. BMW, in building its electric i3...

    Roadster: Couple Cheap Tricks:

A good way to create custom organizer dividers for the trunk is to use L-shaped or rectangular gray foam that is used to pack electronic components with the "hook" part of Velcro epoxyed to it.
