DIY Mechanical Advice - Steering Rack Replacement??

Thanks. I will follow up with the outcome and take pics of any discoveries that might prove useful to others.

DIY Mechanical Advice - Steering Rack Replacement??

I think that thread is where I saw an important tip about prying a bit on motor to tension belt before tightening bolts. Yes RWD doesn't have the front drive motor in the way. And if a trained Tesla tech can do it in an hour I'm hopeful by the end of a six-pack I could be pretty darn close.

DIY Mechanical Advice - Steering Rack Replacement??

I was considering exactly that whether I get the motor on its own or just take it off a full rack. I took the frunk tub out already to assess the situation and think the whole rack would come out easy enough but the motor would be super easy and would save me from messing with the tie rod ends...

DIY Mechanical Advice - Steering Rack Replacement??

Yeah, EJ32‑3200‑DB is exact part. BJ32-3200 from earlier builds should be fully compatible as well. Not too difficult to source so I think I have talked myself into a project. Thanks for the good luck, there comes a point in all of my projects where I will probably need it.

DIY Mechanical Advice - Steering Rack Replacement??

Well I got a text confirming the steering motor is dead after service center closed so I'll talk to them in the morning but they quoted replacing the entire steering rack for about $4000, Tesla doesn't replace individual rack components as its not a Tesla made assembly. My guess is they won't...

DIY Mechanical Advice - Steering Rack Replacement??

So the risk of driving a Tesla beyond warranty has finally become a reality. Service center confirmed my assessment that the steering assist motor has died. For those that have ventured into Tesla repair any advice on why I should or shouldn't replace the steering rack myself? Doesn't look...

"Steering Assist Reduced"- No Power Steering

Update: Service Center attempted to resolve remotely with no luck so does not appear to be a software related issue. Others have noted corroded ground connections causing this and other similar issues so I'm tempted to remove the frunk liner and see what Wisconsin winter has done under there...

"Steering Assist Reduced"- No Power Steering

Have seen several mentions of this with all models but no clear answers. I have done a couple of reboots as well as a Power Off but error returns immediately and power steering remains non-existent. Currently waiting on a service appointment but because I'm out of warranty I'm curious if...

    Help - supercharging evidence required

Supercharging That page from December 2016 makes it pretty clear. It is true that the 400kwh did not exist until models ordered after Jan. 15, 2017. Supercharging Prior to that you either had FUSC or you didn't have supercharging at all. Lately Tesla doesn't seem to know or care about the...

If Tesla wants to compete with $100K mainstream buyers then.....

As SilverGS pointed out the comparison to "mainstream" vehicle buyers is not applicable. This is a technology product being sold to early adopters. Just like early plasma televisions were sold to early adopters for $10,000 and now you can get a better TV for $500. Tesla is pushing the...

V10 is coming with "Caraoke" -- A functioning music player would also be nice :)

Karaoke is an interesting add but still hoping for a meaningful entertainment update and I think most would vote for Spotify. The USB music player weaknesses would be less of a problem if we had Spotify in the US. I have good LTE where I travel 99% of the time but I still use USB often just...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

Take a screenshot of this from the current owners account in case they try to remove the FUSC after transfer of ownership. You should be fine on your drive home, it tends to take days if not weeks for transfer of ownership to be processed. If you want to be super safe don't even request...

Get my 2015 P85DL today! Can I use the supercharger?

As others have noted these pre-2017 vehicles had FUSC for life of the vehicle. Current owner should have this displayed in their account to confirm that. As long as transfer of ownership is not completed this will continue to be the case so your drive home will not be an issue. It SHOULD also...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

I didn't need a card on file as my account originally had FUSC. It was the appearance of a balance on my account that led me to notice the feature was removed. Adding a card and paying the balance at this point would feel like acknowledging that what they did is acceptable. I respond to the...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

Agree, but there is a difference between not caring and having legal standing to do so. Based on all published materials a buyer has the right to expect this feature, by removing it post private sale they have financially impacted the buyer via both cost of ownership and devaluation. I'm sure...

So will FSD follow FUSC on 3rd party sales?

The language has definitely changed over time but there has never been anything published that contradicts or removes the "lifetime of the car" statements for pre-Jan 15,2017 vehicles that had the feature either purchased or included in sale price. They stopped using those terms on their...

So will FSD follow FUSC on 3rd party sales?

This was a 2014 MS P85. All of these vehicles ordered prior to January 15th, 2017 had the "life of the vehicle" FUSC and no terms to the contrary were ever published. Tesla would certainly still have the right to remove it from vehicles they purchased back but they are now claiming they can...

What else does Tesla need to bundle to increase Model S sales?

It really is as simple as this, the market is and always will be limited when it comes to this price range. The M3 will continue to be the more realistic option for the average consumer willing to push their budget a little bit to get into this technology. Many who could afford to push it even...

So will FSD follow FUSC on 3rd party sales?

And here is a response from Tesla stating that yes they do this now.

So will FSD follow FUSC on 3rd party sales?

That would seem to be correct from a legal standpoint but I think the OP was alluding to the fact that they are indeed doing so anyway with FUSC. As I and at least one other owner have discussed in a couple other posts FUSC was removed from a pre-2017 vehicle Tesla did not own. In my case I...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

Interesting, I wonder how they justify Auctions as an exception to the terms. The first sentence is certainly correct, any transaction in which Tesla takes ownership of the vehicle allows them to remove anything they want but any 3rd party transfer including auctions gives them zero legal...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

I still hold out some hope that this is just miscommunication/misinterpretation by low level staff. They did remove FUSC from CPO vehicles around this same time and may have just misapplied to some private sale vehicles. Clearly I'm communicating with Tier 1 support staff so far, if it gets...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

That's the spirit, only way I would consider dropping the issue is if they agreed to a reasonable financial compensation for what was taken away. That would be the estimated cost of supercharging fees over the expected length of ownership plus something additional to compensate for decreased...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

Courtesy of the Waybackmachine we can verify that Tesla's website did originally say "life of the car" for vehicles ordered prior to January 15th, 2017. Others have confirmed that as 2nd owners they still have/had the "transfer to next owner" wording in their Tesla account just like I did. So...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

I definitely won't be giving up, I agree it is as much the principal of it as it is the actual financial impact. I still love the vehicle and may have still purchased it without this feature but to change the value proposition after I already purchased is unacceptable business practice.

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

I included a screenshot of that in my response to them. Mine had the same language clearly displayed when I purchased the vehicle and for 2 months after purchase until they apparently got around to removing it.

Got an email response from Tesla stating they are indeed removing free supercharging from 3rd party vehicles they do not own. "Thank you for contacting Tesla! Confused about free supercharging on older models

I agree that should absolutely be the case but stuck waiting for Tesla to admit that and fix it. Phone support could do nothing and said I had to wait for email response. We'll see how long that takes. In meantime I am now getting emails stating I need to add payment method to my account.

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

They could certainly use that argument but in my case I was only the 2nd owner and it was removed 2 months after ownership was transferred. I can't verify for certain now that it no longer shows on my account but I'm pretty certain it originally still had the wording "to the next owner"...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

How did you convince them to add it back on? I just talked to support via phone and they were not helpful at all, could only confirm that the account shows currently as a standard paid plan. Agent suggested based on what he heard from others in the office that it doesn't transfer to new owner...

Confused about free supercharging on older models

Would be an interesting legal argument. It is at least directly implied that the next owner has those rights as well because the terms clearly state "transfers to next owner." In my case it already was transferred and I had the same terms showing up in my account originally so I think their...

Confused about free supercharging on older models

:D Your wheel example is exactly the analogy I just used while talking to somebody else. You can't remove something already sold as part of the car. If you buy it back then sure because you own it, until then its essentially theft.
  34. J

Confused about free supercharging on older models

I think that is normal behavior for free supercharging, mine did the same thing resetting to 400 each session. Meanwhile it did clearly say free supercharging on my account, until suddenly it didn't and then the 400 stopped resetting.
  35. J

Confused about free supercharging on older models

Purchased from a 3rd party dealer. Would be extremely shady for Tesla to try to claim the dealer counted as the "next owner" so therefore I don't. Not to mention they already had transferred the free supercharging over to my account, I checked that right away after the transfer so this would...

No more free unlimited supercharging for some used Tesla vehicles

Hoping it turns out to be a mistake but free supercharging disappeared from my 2014 MS P85 on July 19th. Car purchased 3rd party about 3 months ago. Had free supercharging on the account after ownership transfer. Today I noticed the screen was displaying a cost while supercharging so I...

Confused about free supercharging on older models

I just discovered the same with my 2014 MS P85. Bought the car 3rd party a few months ago, clearly had free supercharging displayed on my account and used superchargers many times without my balance being affected. Now I discovered my account does not show free supercharging and I have used up...

New owner stuck in valet mode

Maybe I was lucky enough to get the right support agent on the phone but she got the transfer of ownership done almost immediately after I emailed pics of sales docs. That is why I THOUGHT everything was going to be fine until it became obvious the car was never going to get a cell connection...

New owner stuck in valet mode

Thanks, that sounds very reasonable for any Tesla part/repair. If that is what is required and I end up with an upgrade over what originally came with the car I would be pretty happy. Still going to request the dealer cover it.

New owner stuck in valet mode

One support agent told me it takes a few days for the transfer to be complete and this issue might go away after that is done. But the first agent I talked to the night I bought the car was very helpful and had the car showing up in my account and in the app right away so I don't think anything...

New owner stuck in valet mode

Yes, have tried the 2 button as well as the 4 button reboot a few times. I read that some others had to use those reboots to resolve intermittent issues with cellular connection but appears mine is permanent rather than intermittent.
  42. J

New owner stuck in valet mode

I think you are correct, I have not found any mention of an option to disable cellular. After travelling significant distance including through urban areas with no data connection my only conclusion is it's completely dead.
  43. J

New owner stuck in valet mode

Exactly. Once they added the vehicle to my account I should have been able to unlock it directly from the app myself if it was online. Support hasn't been able to do anything more as they can't see the car online either, just tried the usual resets which didn't bring it back online. Soonest I...

Anyone know if there is a risk of complete lockout if I try too many guesses at the PIN code in the meantime?

New owner stuck in valet mode

Thanks for the reply, sounds like a good excuse for a couple hour road trip down to Chicago. Dealer seemed pretty reputable and easy to work with so I might get them to foot the bill if cellular module needs replaced and isn't terribly expensive. They originally offered to truck the car 5...

New owner stuck in valet mode

Thanks for the reply, nearest service center is a couple hours away so I can't just swing by but I may not have any other options than making the trip. By hard reset I mean pressing the scroll wheels and the buttons above for 30 seconds so both screens restart. The actual factory reset option...

New owner stuck in valet mode

So I have an interesting/terrible combination of issues. Bought a 2014 P85 yesterday and somehow the dealer ended up with it in valet mode without knowing the PIN. I was able to talk Tesla support into expediting the transfer of ownership so I could log into the app and disable it. I thought...
