Dragy times for Plaid and LR

So better 0-60 without cheetah stance and launch control... hmm.

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Huh? You realize that this thread is aimed at current AWD owners, that does not have the same accelleration as P3D- and Performance? But wants Performance-like acccelleration... (e.g. AWD to P3D-). The DIY fix/hack from the Eletrified Garage will give us that and more (it seems). And who needs...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Seems like we can soon go faster than the Performance in our AWD's. :) Video: https://twitter.com/RebuildsRich/status/1268539441016168453?s=20 Looking forward to seeing that "easy DIY" video on how to get more hp than the performance. :)

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Speculation - it might even be more expensive as there are more complex components judging by the picture, but nobody knows without looking at the bom. Also they would probably have put the inverter in the front and in the less powerful SR models if it was cheaper. It might just be something...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

To be honest - there doesn't look to much different on the inverter side of things. Same number of mosfets, same layout, same chips. Inverters for 960 and 980 looks fully identical. 990 has a few more "advanced" components in one small corner - doesn't seem to be that significant for the output...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

As far as I can see the IRF630 and 800 are different voltages, so not sure about that as it would probably very different board layouts. This is btw the company that makes them for the model 3 it seems...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Ah yes. That would make sense! Let me see if I can find the datasheets then. Do you know the difference?
  8. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Yep. Thanks. I think it says 630, not 680. But if we look at the can data there is already more than 670A peak going to the rear unit in the AWD (assuming that the 630 and 800 refers to amps). There is also some information in the non-english manuals (here from the German one) - I should...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

And just replying to my own post. Now I'm a bit confused. There is a difference in the top left corner of the inverter. Here you can see the 990 (AWD-R) and the 960 (F) together: The 960 looks identical to the 980 from the video above. Strange. Source:

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Somebody finally took apart a 990 inverter/motor, so now we can compare... 990 on the left, 980 on the right. I don't see much difference from a hardware perspective... Links: and

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

I finally got some more specific numbers from the EU registration for the latest performance (2019.36+). I think it somewhat explains what is going on with the boost update and the difference between 990 and 980, as an AWD with "boost" now fits with the EU registrations for AWD. The 980 motor...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

I have some numbers from a known 20% updated AWD from before the 5% upgrade in 2019.36 and after the first 5% at 2019.8. 201m (1/8 mile) at 7.5-7.7s and 0-100km/h at 3.7s (from stand still / no roll-out). They already had this planned a long time ago I believe. It was quite clear on the AWD's...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Where is the info about 0.5s coming from?
  14. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Likely it’s the 20% upgrade some AWD owners already have gotten in EU 8-9 months ago (no track mode, but same performance as stealth).
  15. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

It's the combined power output that gives you the performance and the low 0-60 times. Whether the power is on the front or back has more to do with understeer/oversteer, handling and component wear. If you look more closely at the data then you can see that the reason why the AWD has ~20% less...
  16. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

I think it is related. The boost in acceleration is caused mainly by the front motor if you look at the CAN data at it's peaks during 0-60 acceleration. At max. power it looks like this (pre 2019.36): Performance rear: 246kw / 730A Performance front: 186kw / 555A AWD rear: 220kw / 640A ~ 10%...
  17. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

It's the front motor (960) that is severely software limited, not the rear (980/990). This seems to make the most difference in AWD vs. Performance. It's pretty clear when you look and compare the CAN data (posted by several members and there are several youtube videos showing it). So not sure...
  18. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

You are forgetting that it's not the rear 990 that is limited, but the 960 in the front (where the 90hp is missing from to turn it into a P3D-).

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

Just adding this EU technical registration info here also - updated with the latest deliveries after 2019.36 upgrade. Interesting is that the AWD now ("officially" on paper) has more hp than the Performance had in the beginning of the year (if you removed the limits). If anybody knows of...
  20. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Did everybody just forget that with the recent CAN data findings the limits where mostly on the front 960-motor on the AWD, not the rear? There was only a 10kW input difference on the rear (before 2019.36). So 990 vs. 980 might not make that big a difference. Btw - recent EU registrations looks...
  21. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Well... there is a difference between facts and speculation (I wouldn't call it "logic"). By your "logic" the SR(+) should also have a 990 as it's lower power output on the rear motor than the Performance (and here they would want to save money - so let's not conclude anything without clear...

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

As I wrote in the other thread then those numbers in the manual doesn't seem right (both input and output wise). It's too low for the Performance and too high for the AWD currently. From the CAN data it seems like each motor is pulling something like this at input level at it's max output...
  24. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

The max. 800A vs 600A has been stated since the early days in the manuals. But there are some interesting things. From the CAN data we know the following: Performance max: Rear: 246kW @ 337V ~730A Front: 186kW @335V ~ 555A AWD max: Rear 220kW @ 350V? ~ 628A Front: 132kW @ 350V? ~ 377A The...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Thanks. Really good information - was waiting for somebody to do that test. Turns out the last 59 pages of discussion around 980 vs 990 motors should have been around the 960 instead - just like we started to suspect. :) The front is limited with 30% and the rear with 10% compared to...

If you know the license plates / VIN numbers you can look them up (different website for each country). Like for Norway it is here: Kjøretøyopplysninger | Statens vegvesen and for Denmark it would be Vis køretøj - DMR Kerne. In Norway you can see each motor separately and in Denmark it's...

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

If measured at the output stage you should be able to - and that is how the registrations in EU looks (each motor and a total listed). And to some extend there should at least be a correlation between input and output power (though the F and R motors have different efficiencies - the back being...
  29. D

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

The perm magnet rear motor should be about 4% more efficient than the induction front (according to various "internet sources"), so it's not that big a difference for our calculations. It would just mean the front would be outputting something less like 110kW at it's current peak in the current...

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

Thanks. That is quite interesting. Shows an almost perfect 40/60 power distribution between front and rear. Of course this is power going in, not to be directly compared with the power/effect coming out - and the two types of motors are different, probably with different efficiencies. I'm not...

Interesting. Hope you can figure it out. What equipment/software are you using for reading it out from the car?

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

It's actually an interesting question. Has it ever been tested how much power each motor can output? Pre-5% upgrade we know the AWD was doing 274kW (367hp). If the front was 150kW (201hp) then that just leaves 124kW (166hp) for the rear. It would make the front motor more powerful (and the rear...

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

It was my neighbor's Model 3 that got the 20% update. Track mode has apparently been there from time to time (depending on software version), but it has never shown as a Performance/Stealth with a red line in the "About my Tesla" menu.

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

Thanks. Interesting that it's an 980 motor in the SR+. I just checked a few EU registrations of SR+ (as they have also recently arrived here) and they are listed at the same max. power transfer as LR RWD in the offical EU papers. Interesting because the SR+ has a 0-60 of 5.6s and the LR RWD is...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Yes, that is the whole point (more or less). It produces less now than it actually can (and according to this then all AWDs can easily produce 350kW, but now produce around the measured 287kW-290kW due to software limits). The Performance can produce 360kW, but potentially 380kW if you look at...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

On EU registration papers the car manufacturer has to precisely state the tested maximum power output of the motors (in some countries the total power, in others for each motor if dual). This number is used for approvals, testing, insurance and other legal things. Normally you would want this...

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

I think the "evidence" hints of a soon to be released Ludacris mode for Performance and a +20% upgrade for AWD. Elon is hinting at the first quite clearly, and the AWD update is already out there for a very few EU users (owners were Tesla mixed up performance deliveries with AWDs in the initial...

Model 3 Motors on the Tesla Parts Catalog

I posted this in another thread some time ago, but it might belong here better (official EU car registrations that includes offical max. motor power output of the different models). I have now also gotten info from the EU registrations of P3D-/Stealth as the first were delivered a month ago in...
  41. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

The EU registered maximum is a 10KW difference between the AWD and Performance. The AWD can officially deliver a total of 469 hp(I) according to the registrations (hint: probably with the 20% update some special owners have installed). A normal AWD will currently measure around 385-390 hp(I) on...

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

I would honestly be careful trusting Wikipedia here. They list the sources on the page as blog articles, dyno-results and reddit posts. None of which are official or reliable. I would instead trust the EU numbers on the EU car registrations (with all the EU laws and crazy regulations I think...
  43. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Interesting question. At least based on the EU motor/type registrations then the Performance model would be able to get ~5% more than it has today (~20% for the AWD). It would more or less allow for ludicris mode for Performance and "performance" for AWD. Interesting to see if that happens. :-)
  44. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Only that I can confirm that the software exists on at least one of the EU LR AWD's (March delivery). Tesla gave it as compensation for messing up deliveries on the first EU batches to arrive. Software looks exactly the same as normal LR AWD (e.g. no performance badge or track mode) and was...
  45. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Not quite. You are still forgetting the fact about the "20% increase" software version that a few AWD owners now have that gives the roughly the same accelleration as performance without turning it into the P3D- (track mode and so on). So let's just wait a few months and see what happens. :)
  46. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

You would know if you had it. There are no difference in the menus, but when installing the update (done OTA) it gives you a notification you should be aware of the extra 20% power and drive carefully.
  47. D

For AWD owners wanting a P3D-

Actually that software is already "out there" (my neighbour owns a Model 3 with that software, so I have seen it myself). It was installed in March/April on a few of the european standard AWD's (known as "20% upgrade") some time after delivery as compensation for messing up orders. This does not...

I gathered some more data from various official EU vehicle registrations (across several countries) and some interesting things do show up after looking more closely at the data (roughly looked at 10 registrations per Model 3 type per country, and they are 100% consistent). In the registration...
