APs generally spread sideways, not up and down. Directly below one isn’t great coverage. Screw it to the side of the rafter and you might get a better signal

    Big New Update

Definitely feels that way to me. I have a steep downhill into a junction soon after leaving home and I’m having to use the brake pedal on that where previously regen would control the speed with the accelerator lifted. Seems similar after a while driving. Doesn’t appear to be related to State of...

    Edinburgh central charging options?

Love Adderstone. You can make it to Edinburgh in an SR+ from Scotch Corner but you have to take a high charge then drive very sensibly. 10 mins at Adderstone means less time in Scotch Corner (definite win) and more juice for A1 overtakes

Seeking advice on U.K. electricity provider

Two EVs and a ground source heat pump here. Peak draw when heating the hot water tank for legionella boost is close to 15kW in the early hours. Octopus may not like me, but I love the 5p juice :)

Planning trip to Edinburgh and Inverness from the South East

I spent a week up there earlier in the summer. The Inverness supercharger is quiet but hard to get to - right in the middle of town. Better to take a stop at Aviemore and head north fuller. there’s a single 50kW CPS charger at the Inverness Caley Thistle stadium that was quiet (and free) and...

What do you do with your excess solar power?

Last I checked, my export tariff on OVO is 5.5p per kWh vs 5p per kWh on Octopus Go to fill the car during the night. honestly, other than basic things like aiming to run the laundry or dishwasher mid afternoon, and trying to have only one on at a time, I don’t worry too much about using all...

    Another Range query....

Kids Kids putting the heated seats on while playing games is a battery eater. Almost as expensive as the bald spots they make on the tyres scrubbing the left and right while stationary

    Another Range query....

Then watch Bjorn Nyland’s experiment that showed driving at max speed to arrive at a supercharger empty was the fastest option. Not the cheapest though...

    Ingenext Bonus Module

Interesting to see if they start to offer versions that only enable non drivetrain features. I honestly don’t need 0.6 seconds less to 60mph but I’d pay a few hundred for the rear seat heaters and ambient lights. Less fear of warranty/insurance issues that way too

Model 3 SR+ gets another range bump

May be optimism bias on my part, but 6k miles over 8 months is not a lot of driving. The BMS and range indicator is probably accounting for lots of small low efficiency trips rather than what you’d get if you actually tried to drive 250miles between charges. Between that and the cold weather...

    4WD doesn't mean you're invincible

Have a word with your local ATS tyre shop. I ordered my all-seasons from BlackCircles but got them fitted at ATS. They run a ‘tyre hotel’ and will store your other tyres for £8 each per six months.

    4WD doesn't mean you're invincible

+1 for cross climates. I have them fitted on my SR+ and have been driving up and down a similar slope in west Edinburgh without incident (so far) Really bought them for better stopping in cold wet conditions but pleasantly surprised how well they’ve done in the snow and ice

PV Solar - what the view in the UK in 2021?

something like gravitricity at a home or community scale I suspect rather than batteries Storing renewable energy in mineshaft weights may be cheaper than using batteries - Revolution-Green watching them with interest I do love the massive weighted trains in the US but they are about as...

PV Solar - what the view in the UK in 2021?

I agree with your generation stats (though will depend on how far north/south you are). I get about 3000kWh from a 3.6kW system (west facing) in Edinburgh. I find I use a lot less than 50% of what I generate through. Closer to 25-30% generation tariff is 5.5p per kWh so it’s marginally more...

Does the M3 need a Snow Mode?

First year with them. Yesterday was my car’s (UK) birthday Last winter the traction control worked well. Can’t remember a wheel spin but was definitely conscious that stopping wasn’t good in slush. it’s a £40k rwd car with 250hp. £700 for grippier tyres to let me enjoy it all year with less...

Does the M3 need a Snow Mode?

For me, with an SR+, it’s the days when it has snowed, it’s not been gritted and I’m not the first person out our street that are the issue. Last year I found traction was ok on fresh snow but as soon as it had been compacted, it was hard to get going and terrible trying to stop in a hurry No...

    Leaving People in the Car?

If the front seat passenger keeps their seatbelt on, the car doesn’t auto lock and the entertainment keeps playing. Doesn’t need to be a paired phone in the car. Works better for me than leaving the driver door on the first click if I’m nipping into a shop

Tesla Service vs Traditional Manufacturers Service

Every year for three years, Renault Finance made me bring my Zoe in for a dealer service. Every time, the booking agent asked me if I wanted an optional oil filter change. Now the PCP is done, I’ll check the brakes and tyres but it’s never seeing a dealer again

    Headlight adjustment needed post release?

I had that a month ago. Not sure if it was a recent release issue or not as haven’t been doing much night driving. Opening the headlight adjustment definitely lowered them but turns out it lowered them too far. Booked into the Service Centre and they checked and fixed it in 10 mins Lesson...

    Winter wheels

Still haven’t pulled the trigger. I’m doing about 15 miles a week in Tier3 lockdown. Figure it’s going to be like that for a while so hard to justify the spend on wheels/tyres. If it snows, I’ll stay home. My second car is a Zoe and it’s as sure footed as a mountain goat when the roads are...

    Model 3 Upgrade Incoming?

Mine was massively improved by a a mobile service engineer (while fixing another trim issue). Took off the liner below around the catch the the boot lids clicks into. Moved the catch down a few millimetres and now the boot goes clunk rather than clank. Definitely worth playing around with. It...

    Octopus Agile

Or start digging a hole. According to this Potential Energy You get 0.027kWh potential energy by raising 1000kg by 10m (or letting it drop that far) So only a 2km hole, cable and dynamo and I could turn my M3 into a Powerwall. Really puts battery density into perspective!
  33. K

So my first week of Tesla ownership....

I’ve just learned to have my foot on the accelerator any time I’m driving on non-dual carriageway and approaching an oncoming HGV. That is the only consistent one that freaks my M3 out. Can’t think I’ve ever had it overtaking but I’m generally on the accelerator then anyway as don’t have FSD

Warning! New Brake Pads and Discs after 13,000 miles

What are people’s views on using the brake pedal or the emergency brake (press and hold the Park button - also known as the phantom braking simulator) for scrubbing rust or curing squeaks?
  35. K

    Octopus Agile

That’s a very expensive solution. Try as I might (and I’ve been guilty of some classic man maths over the years) I just can’t press the button on a powerwall. The payback just isn’t there until either all suppliers are charging peak rate prices (the likely end game for smart meters) or battery...

    Stick on vinyl number plates

If you don’t want to outright ask your lease company for authority to replace the number plates, you could ask the lease company for a letter showing you are authorised to have a plate made for a trailer or lighting board for a bike rack. A ‘friend of mine’ told me that worked fine for them...

    Octopus Agile

It’s been enough to make me swap back. I’ve a 3.6kW solar array so even working at home during the day, I rarely draw anything off the grid after 9am unless running a high load appliance. Luxury Car Tax RIP - Budget 2020

Would depend on how long your lease is and at what point they are applying it. The reduction is £300 per year from year two onwards. If you are early in a two year lease, £16pm could be ok. If not, the lease company are trying to keep some of the saving to increase their margin on the deal
  42. K

Luxury Car Tax RIP - Budget 2020

It was in their T&Cs that I would be liable to pay any increase in VED during the term of the lease. No mention of what would happen if VED reduced (not a common event). I just asked what they thought was reasonable - a direct saving should be passed on in the same way a direct cost would be...

Luxury Car Tax RIP - Budget 2020

Resurrecting this old thread to share that ZenAuto have agreed to reduce my monthly lease charges by £25 a month as they no longer have to cover the Luxury Car Tax in the car costs. Took a few polite emails but suspect it’s not something that they are going to offer unprompted. Now to find...

    Winter wheels

I’m in an SR+ too and it’s the rear wheel drive mixed with half a mile of uphill to the main roads through our housing estate (ungritted of course) that has me looking. That and a suspicion that this year’s snowboarding is more likely to be Aonach Mor than Alpe d’Huez. I’ve been sold on winter...
