Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Does Tesla update the pricing in the rate plans that exist in the app? Or are we expected to do that ourselves as the rates change? I'm on E-TOU-B and the pricing in the app appears to be vastly different from the most recent posted tariff sheet from PG&E.

My previous experience with VPP was that it pegged my site export limit, often hitting my reserve (even if set very low) before the peak period ended. This go around the algorithm seems pretty conservative. I haven't hit my reserve limit yet in the 3 VPP events I've watched.

    Storm watch all summer?

NWS has issued a flood warning based on the amount of water they’re letting out of pineflat damn and it could be that way for the entire summer. My system is in storm watch is it gonna be like that all summer? We are not really in any eminent danger of having flooding at my house. Should I...

California - new CPUC incentives for batteries in mid 2023?

Not sure; I also got the email with that same text (and already have powerwalls), so I took it more as an email blast to help control the PR narrative of NEM 3.0

    HVAC recommendation?

I ran across this video recently and it has me really intrigued. https://signaturesolar.com/deye-hybrid-ac-dc-solar-air-conditioner-2-ton/ I would want to get a setup that would utilize my existing ducting rather than wall mounted head units, but being able to install additional solar panels...

I have a reservation for a Silverado EV and our PV + Powerwall install was done by a SunPower installer. I couldn't wait though and bought a 3/4 ton Diesel this summer :) If the Silverado EV takes long enough I might buy it as well.

PowerWall Cold Start without Grid Power

The packaging with all the premade connectors really made setup easy. I was surprised that they didn't have to take either major component out of the box!

Battery 4 hour storage limit [Utility scale storage]

These observations are similar to ones I made during the recent VPP events that coincided with the CA heat wave. The PW2 has a sustained output of 5 kW (per PW2) but a usable capacity of 13.5 kWh (per PW2). That's 2.7 hours. This ratio works pretty well to support an individual home; it's not...

Central CA has the opposite problem. I'm off the grid / net exporter during the winter and cannot produce nearly enough to cover my usage in the Summer.

Interesting that PG&E is actually working with Chevrolet on V2G (or V2H)

From the article: "The average California home uses around 20 kilowatt-hours of power a day, while a Chevy Bolt has a battery with 60kWh capacity, Spina said. That translates into at least two or three days worth of electricity for a single home, he said." In 2021 my home averaged 45 kWh per...

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

There is one piece you are missing that I have posted about previously. The TEG has a setting called Site Limit Export. This is not always set to the PTO maximum. In my case the Site Limit Export is 10.8 kW (My PTO allows ~27 kW) My experience in VPP events has been that the PWs will discharge...

This graph (and others you have shared) to me reinforces that the STORAGE capacity compared to the OUTPUT capacity of the PW2 is not optimized for grid support (or high load backup like AC use). I'd like to see 4x the continuous output rating in storage in future generations. Ex. 5 kW...

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Yea that wouldn't be a problem. Unless it happens after about 8:15 when my PW2 hits the 5% reserve state. I might keep my reserve at 100% for the first hour like some suggested and see how that goes.

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Just got a text from PG&E about rotating outages. My address is in block 6C which is listed in the effected blocks. Do I bail on the VPP or roll the dice? Pre-cooling the house right now but it gets hot pretty fast when all AC is turned off.

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

There are a combination of factors. Your combined powerwall output limit, your site export limit configuration and your PTO export limit. The software cant adequately anticipate how your home loads are going to change, so going at max export until you hit reserve makes the most sense. The main...

Time-based control. The algorithm applies the PG&E rate sheet and for TOU-B concludes that using the powerwall is not financially advantageous during the winter period, and in summer on Sat / Sun (off-peak) it also does not use the PW for home loads.

Are you on self-powered mode? If you are your behavior will be different than mine.
  30. M

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Yes but if you have the time based controls and TOU-B rate plan set, you should not be using from your powerwall at all on Sat or Sunday. The VPP baseline looks at your Powerwall usage (not home loads) and compares against the event output. Since my PWs are on standby (other than charging)...

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

I mean the baseline that is used to determine compensation from the event. My weekend behavior is very different from week day because of all day off peak. Hopefully the event calculation takes that into consideration.
  32. M

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

3,246 fleet home now! How is the baseline calculated for weekends? I’m on TOU-B which has off peak weekends. Comparing to non event weekends my baseline would be zero.

I know Tesla can't program their products to be all things to all people; but in this case I'm doing LESS to support the grid from 4-6 in order to support it more for one hour.

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Are you saying "discharge" as in "discharge to grid"? Or you are observing that the PW is in standby? For me, yes I am exporting less right now than I would on a normal day because the PW would be absorbing the home loads. Since sunset is at 7:25 there won't really be any Solar left after the...
  35. M

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Right, but since the sun will still be up and the event is only 1 hour I'm going to be watching the balance between Solar and Home Load. In other words, I might have less than 10.8 kW output from the PW to hit the site limit export.
  36. M

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

I'm at 88% state of charge right now because we went all the way down to 5% yesterday during the event. Fortunately the event today will only be one hour, so 10.8 kWh will be exported [site limit] (We will see how Solar balances against Home load for that hour).

Charts from yesterday. I set my ACs colder than usual during the day to try to minimize run time during peak. This worked but overall I used more for the day. It was hotter and less cloud cover on Tuesday. Solar generation took a hit in the middle of the day due to cloud cover. With 3 PW, a...

Welp... I didn't make it until 9:00 pm. My PWs reached 5% reserve at about 8:40 pm, turned off and I started pulling from the grid. I kicked off my ACs until 9:00. I'll post my full charts from the day tomorrow.

Now that solar is gone seeing the PW topped at 14.8 kW (3 PW2) with AC units cooling off the upstairs for kid bedtime. Grid exports are being limited. When the downstairs AC kicks on also it goes down more. Expecting the PW to throttle at some point to get to 9:00 within the 5% reserve I set...

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Power reported on the VPP page is PW discharge not grid discharge. I appear to be limited to 10.8 kW even though I have 3 PW (reported to be 10.77 kW in settings). Screenshots when AC kicked on and without. Export to grid amount stayed the same.
  43. M

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Same behavior for me. Typically 100% of solar goes to the grid and home runs off PW. Taken in the 4-5 pm hour.
  44. M

I was down to 33% at end of peak yesterday and having some spotty PV generation. I'm at 94% right now though so looks to be good for the event.

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

The VPP screen is showing the amount of solar that is going to my Powerwalls but this IS typical behavior for me on Time-Based Control with my rate plan entered (no edits). I was expecting to be allowed to grid charge to fill the Powerwalls; that would have shifted more of my solar to export in...

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

I think it’s forced unless you opt out of the event. I’m on TOU-B so it’s kind of a non event for me. If I was on an EV plan then I’d like to charge from the grid every night!

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

The exporting will be from 6 - 9 PM The event allows our systems to charge from the grid in the morning to make sure we are at 100% when peak starts.
