New MYLR Charging and Battery Drain

If it would help, consider installing a heat alarm in the garage, ideally tied into your wired home smoke alarms, if you have those. This is in lieu of a standard smoke alarm that can give false alarms when installed in garages.

    NEMA 14-50 outlet installed

Yes, agree. I was in the middle of correcting when you commented. Wow, you guys are fast! I will say that I don't notice that the Hubbell is tighter, which surprised me from all the earlier comments. But temp is noticeably down, which makes me feel better.

    NEMA 14-50 outlet installed

For completeness, the contacts are probably brass, at least one of them. I recently replaced my Leviton 14-50 which worked fine for 2 years. With two EVs now (MY and EUV), I noticed that my ChargePoint plug was abnormally hot after a few hrs of charging. I retightened the terminals to spec, but...

    Center Console Tray Lighting Hack

Maybe my LED is different. These are pics in regular IPhone mode, so pretty close to real brightness. I know some cars (Model 3) have a front-facing LED, which would not work with this mod.

    Center Console Tray Lighting Hack

I originally drilled holes, but used Dremel with cuttting wheel to finalize the rectangle. From scratch, I would just use Dremel exclusively.

Also here it is in black, which I now prefer since it almost looks stock.

    Center Console Tray Lighting Hack

Decided to go bigger and add a logo. IPhone pics makes it look brighter than it is, but definitely helps illuminate that forward bin. To make this mod, you'll need to create a 125mmx22mm rectangular cutout in the back of the console tray. I did this by marking out the perimeter with a ruler and...

Tesla Wall Charger vs Charge Point vs Juice Box

Here you go. I printed in 25% infill PETG. You can use some sand paper to smooth the retaining bump to suit your needs. Mine has been installed for 2 years and is still working great. Grab and go!

    Center Console Tray Lighting Hack

Sharing this hack to provide some illumination of the Tesla forward center console tray. With my older eyes, that forward tray is like a black hole at night without the overhead lights on. Now impressed that my old Subaru Forester had a ceiling mounted constant amber spot illumination of the...

Smoke When Charging [steam under certain conditions]

Yes, probably water in the atmosphere that froze on the Heat Pump/AC coil when heat pump was warming battery during initial charge. Then defrost cycle melted that ice causing warmed moist air to blow out into colder air and voila! Happens on home heat pumps all the time, especially when it’s...

    Battery and range issues

My observation is that with my MY, between any two points, there is a "simple range" assuming you end your trip at 2nd point, and a "trip range" that includes preconditioning (and reduced range or increase in % battery used). My impression is that the Tesla navigation is optimized to minimize...

    Excessively high consumption

Even in the hottest temps your EV is still at least 2-3 times as efficient as an ICE car. And both consume same energy to run the A/C.
  13. M

    Excessively high consumption

No, it doesn’t. You could leave car with full battery, have it run down to zero over a month, and that statistic won’t change. It only reflects efficiency while driving.

Thule Force XT Sport roof cargo box installed.

Anser, Can you help me solve a mystery? My Model Y (made May '21) has Tesla OEM crossbars that measure 39 inches front edge (front) to back edge (rear). I'm wondering how yours are closer together. According to the instructions, the center of each mount point should be is 227 mm (9") from front...

Tesla Wall Charger vs Charge Point vs Juice Box

Here’s something I designed. No need to remove adapter by hand. Just insert into this receptacle, squeeze trigger and remove. Then store handle in Chargepoint receptacle. Reverse to use. There’s a small tab inside to firmly grasp the adapter. Screws into stud or anchor through one hole in back...

Need 4 new tires - Would these fit/work? Any opinion on these? Michelin Primacy MXM4 All-Season

Just convert to kWh and multiply. $0.12868x.292 = $0.0375, ignoring charging losses that prob adds 10% to that.

Need 4 new tires - Would these fit/work? Any opinion on these? Michelin Primacy MXM4 All-Season

Thanks, then rough estimate for electricity is $0.042/mi ($0.15/kWh and 275Wh/mi) and tires are also $0.042/mi ($1,250/30,000).

Need 4 new tires - Would these fit/work? Any opinion on these? Michelin Primacy MXM4 All-Season

Curious how many miles on your OEM tires. Also, what will final installed price of CC2s be, if willing to share. I have theory that cost/mile of tire wear for a Tesla MY is roughly same as the cost of energy used assuming home charging. Weird coincidence. And that sum of those two is roughly...

Phantom Drain (vampire, parasitic, maintenance) with long term parking.

Not sure if previous post was a typo, but 1-2 % per week is my experience. 6 days at airport in Apr with everything off and I returned to +1 miles (likely due to difference in temp).

What’s your longest drive without charging?

255 miles from Columbia, MD to Cranberry PA on I-70 and a PA Turnpike. 312 miles to start. Ended with 36 on display. TACC set at 68 mph. Late afternoon/eve of clear day, little wind in low 80s. A/C at 72. ‘21 MYLR with driver and 2 passengers and roof rack (empty). Sweated the last 50 miles, but...

Confirm No AC Cabin Overheat Protection is Operating

Does anyone know how to confirm that that No A/C COP is actually functioning? 75F here the other day while at work and temp in car with sunshade was 132F. Surprised that simple circulating of air would not bring that number down. Could I put streamers on vents to see air movement? Does anyone...

    Airport Parking for 6 days - Advice/Recommendations

Similar trip last week out of BWI, parked MY in garage in 60F temps for 6 days. Sentry Mode was off. 227 miles when we left, 228 (not a typo) when we returned. Likely due to temp variation, but point is very little drain when car sleeps. Enjoy your trip.

Building new house with EV charging outlet in the garage

Didn’t ask, but if new construction, I would request a heat sensor/alarm tied into your interior smoke alarms. Especially if garage is below living space. Cheap and provides additional occupant protection.

    Lets talk cameras

Well, it was just a hypothesis... You can view fender cameras in the backup viewer and also if you have turn signals set to display them. Do they look fogged over when this happens?
  26. M

    Lets talk cameras

My hypothesis: Overnight, water vapor from relatively warm 65 deg air gets behind the camera covers or even into the camera lenses. In morning you drive in 20F weather and the cameras begin to cool causing the water vapor to condense on the various covers/lenses. Eventually the condensed water...

    Really low range

So would your hypothesis be: Pull car with X% (warm) battery into cold garage, then 24 hrs later battery is cold and Tesla adjusts % available miles left down by ~3%. So this wouldn't keep happening if you left it in garage for another 2-3 days, and might go back up if temperature in garage...
  28. M

    Really low range

Appreciate the correction--I did ask for it! Point of my post was to say that if your MY is really losing 3% charge a day, then it might be discernable by looking for something warm in your car. As an example, I took this pic with the Sentry On, showing that some of it's power usage is running...

    Really low range

But it’s over over 24 hrs so I should have said continuous 100W load. Same result. Like burning 100W bulb all day.
  30. M

    Really low range

Someone can check my calculations, but 3% of an 82 kWh battery is ~100 Wh, so there's essentially a 100W incandescent bulb running 24 hrs a day in your car. That's a decent amount of heat, like a heat-gun on a low setting. Car makes no sound or light when off, so there's gotta be heat somewhere...

    mobile vs wall charger?

Please ask your insurance agents to reference a case where a DIY outlet install caused a denial of coverage. I see nothing in my policy referencing unpermitted work. Get the permit because you care about your life and lives of others, not because of some speculation on insurance coverage. And...

DIY Install of NEMA 14-50 receptacle

I wish people would stop using this speculative comment to scare people into getting a licensed electrician and permits. You should definitely get a permit, but even if you don't and there's fire damage, your insurance will likely cover you just like they'll cover you for deep frying that turkey...

1k Roadtrip with MY - looks like my car was sandblasted.

Just to clarify, any damage to the area shown in the pic would be prevented by *front* mudflaps. No matter what you do to remedy any paint damage, highly recommend getting the Tesla or similar front mudflaps installed.

    6-50 Extension Cords Travel Charging

Easy. Anywhere near Youngstown, OH. It's a EV charger desert. 120V isn't very helpful and no A) or B)s. Which is why I carry a heavy-duty extension cord to charge at in-laws who have an electric dryer.

NEMA 14-50 4 pin to 3 pin adapter?

And if you're like me, start talking with friends and family whom you might visit and ask if they have an electric dryer located near the garage. New England Road Trip Report

As promised, data on a similar road trip with a Thule Ascent 1500 roof top box. First thing to note is that the Tesla roof rack rails are 38" outside to outside, which means this older box does NOT fit on a Model Y. The "claws" on the box won't slide far enough apart to mount on the roof rails...

Will Homelink work with non-wifi/MyQ garage door openers?

And what would the App do exactly? Transmitter is in car. Home can be miles away. Are you referring to some other form of control, perhaps through a WiFi enabled device that resides at home?

Pro Tip: Setting the climate 71F or lower uses less energy in hot weather

No, actually resistant heat is “very inefficient”. The heat pump (A/C is a heat pump) efficiency can be up to 300%, but is driven by temperature differences between inside and outside. 95 vs 75 (20 deg) in summer compared to 35 vs 75 in winter (40) and larger temp delta in winter also increases...
  43. M

Will Homelink work with non-wifi/MyQ garage door openers?

Worth noting that most included openers won’t work if car is not on, so if you happen to leave car outside and someone breaks in, they won’t have free key to your home. That was real reason I wanted it integrated, like our other cars.
  44. M

Will Homelink work with non-wifi/MyQ garage door openers?

Yes, it’s too expensive for $10 in parts, but the integration with NAV almost makes it worth it. I have it set to open as I roll up the driveway from being away. It gives you a few seconds to cancel if you don’t want door to cycle (it could already be open or maybe sneaking a gift home). Anyway...

MYLR first road trip - 900 miles in California - notes and findings

I have to dispute this blanket statement. I’m currently 1200 mi into a 2.5k mi trip from MD, to OH and then New England in our May ‘21 MYLR. Averaging 252 kWh/mi in 90F conditions. Granted, many 2-lane 55 mph roads and generally keeping under 70 on highways, but you can definitely start with 312...
