Phantom Braking getting worse - any ideas on how to stop it?

From the reports I've seen the cars with radar are better at not falling into the heat mirage trap but still have the same PB issues in other situations but maybe that's not correct or maybe it's an oversimplification. Also some (many?) radar cars have had their radar disabled by software...

Phantom Braking getting worse - any ideas on how to stop it?

Ford's BC also doesn't have the PB problems that Tesla has so it isn't just TACC that's vastly superior to Tesla's offering I guess. So no, I don't think "But the tesla can turn!" is a valid excuse. The issue here really isn't "The Tesla has more functionality so it's okay that it doesn't work...

Okay I guess I just wish it worked better.

Could bugs be causing (some) phantom braking?

Disabling AEB doesn't stop PB because PB isn't AEB it's TACC slowing down to what it perceives as a vehicle in your lane moving much much slower.

Phantom Braking getting worse - any ideas on how to stop it?

Just completed a 1500 mile roadtrip in my Ford, not a single TACC PB on the same roads that induces dozens of them in my Tesla. How does Ford do it? Magic I guess. Or maybe radar.

Yes, its showing the degree of regenerative breaking.

I also have a honda and a ford with TACC and neither PBs like the Tesla.

Phantom Braking getting worse - any ideas on how to stop it?

It seems like the kind caused by objects that are there like freeway signs got better but the kind of PB caused by things that aren't there (heat mirages) got much, much worse.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

I was 99% sure it was braking harder than "full regen" but just made it 100% by going out and testing it and comparing.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

Yes, I'm referring to the length of the green line but "max regen" braking isn't really the full story here as it is braking harder than the normal max at the same speed. Top pic is from a PB, bottom pic is from foot completely off the throttle regen during normal driving. The line is fuller...

Phantom Braking getting worse - any ideas on how to stop it?

Reports by whom? Pretty much everyone I've seen on this forum says its better with radar.

    Phantom Braking

Are there a rash of TACC caused crashes in Fords and Hondas? Is it really accurate to say TACC is "intended eventually for autonomy"? It's not FSD. I just want cruise control that works, I don't want to participate in Musk's delusions regarding full autonomy.

    Phantom Braking

At a minimum dozens of PBs. I remember one particularly bad trip on a two lane in Colorado that IIRC I stopped counting at around 20 PBs in 2 hours. As I said, it's not usually just mirages it's mirage+vehicle in the "right" place so I wouldn't really say it's "one in thousands" unless you...

This is pretty hard braking imo. It's not full on panic stop but pretty sharp.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

My PBs sometime seem harder than just regen and the bar gets fuller than I recall it doing with just regen I guess maybe it could be regenning harder that it does under normal conditions. Ultimately it doesn't really matter I dont think, slowing down from 75 to 40 is slowing down from 75 to 40...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

I'd open a service report for TACC not working properly. They'll ask you for an exact time/date that one occurred so they can pull the logs, which I had because I had video of some of them. They almost certainly won't do anything to fix it but they need to know how widespread the problem is...

    Minor Phantom Braking Observation

I've driven both Ford's and Honda's TACCs extensively and neither has the PB problems that Tesla's radarless TACC has.

    Phantom Braking

It's already had two service appointments, they say the hardware is all fine. It's heat mirages. Sometimes all by themselves but mostly combined with an actual vehicle that makes the vehicle appear as if its doubled in size in an instant i.e. is approaching very rapidly.

Tesla Model 3 Accident - Why didnt Airbags Deploy?

You will probably not have problems in and around SD. If you drive to Phoenix or Vegas or similar, you will probably have problems.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

The PB in Nevada is so bad that during the purchase process they should honestly be forced to have customers sign a waver saying they understand TACC will be largely unusable on highways in the state. My recent road trip I eventually just gave up and spent the rest of the trip either driving...

    Phantom Braking

No I haven't but I don't think this is true so shouldn't make a difference. Shouldn't make a difference even if it were true, if the car thinks it needs to slow down because an object is stopped in its path it shouldn't decelerate less just because of what mode you're in though of course it...

    Phantom Braking

It's considerably harder than just full regen. Uh, yeah, it only happens when TACC is on, it isn't AEB.
  26. F

    Phantom Braking

Here's a video of it. It would do this probably a hundred times a day if I let it. Have had two service appointments for it, they say all the physical hardware is fine and that hopefully it will get fixed someday by improvements in TACC/AP and to just not use the cruise control. Not use the...

    Phantom Braking

I don't know where you live. Coeur d'Alene is more like Canada than Nevada. If it is sunny and you drive through the state on 80 or 95 you will get PBs, guaranteed. If you don't, take your car to a service center so they can figure out why yours doesn't and everyone elses does.

Is the standard Tesla Autopilot safer than manual driving?

The tesla safety statistics I saw were not apples to oranges and were therefore meaningless but maybe they've put together some better data.

    Phantom Braking

There are many on this forum that have pointed out that road mirages at a distance cause phantom braking. If you live in a place that doesn't frequently have them, or has conditions that obstruct views at that distance, or is too congested to have open highway between you and that distance, then...

    Autonomous Car Progress

Does Tesla's eye tracking even work at night or through sunglasses? I recall seeing a video that made it seem like it didn't. It seems that Tesla doesn't nag because their eye tracking is worse, not because their self driving is better.

When will privately owned Tesla Robotaxis be operating on HW3 or lower?

Phantom braking happens nonstop on AP on highways in Nevada on sunny days which is 100% vision.
  32. F

Phantom Braking getting worse - any ideas on how to stop it?

Happens all the time in Nevada, due to the mirages. It'd happen literally hundreds of times between Reno and Vegas if you tried to use AP all the way there. I've filed two service requests for it. One they reviewed the telemetry remotely and said everything was fine, sorry, it just doesn't work...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

When I'm on an essentially deserted highway why would I have my foot on the gas, hovering or otherwise. Is that really how most people use cruise control? Foot on the gas pedal in case you need 450 horsepower in an emergency? Like, yeah, I do keep my foot on the gas but it's because the TACC is...

How to sue Tesla over historical claims

On the day I picked up the car if someone had told me TACC would be unusable on the highway 50%+ of the time I probably wouldn't have bought the car. Wonder if I can get it lemon law'd for that.
  35. F

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

Tesla's TACC is absolute garbage. I can't believe they're allowed to sell cars with it. In Nevada the heat mirages cause it to slam on the brakes OVER and OVER and OVER. Ended up driving from Vegas to Reno and back nearly completely manually. $60,000 car that doesn't have functional cruise...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

Their ability to do OTA updates is mostly theoretical at this point. And I've heard they're even a pain in the ass to do at the dealer e.g. they'll have a bunch of updates they need to do in sequence and one will error out and it can mean a tech ends up spending all day doing updates instead of...

What I assume you're talking about is allowing you to select between one factory tire size and the others, it does not allow you to select non factory tire sizes or input any tire size you want in order to correct for a 2.6% difference in diameter. All the 3 factory tire sizes are very close to...

Car & Driver: The Mach E is simply better than the Model Y

Lmao supply chain issues are only "somewhat responsible" okay. The Mach was the second best selling S/CUV to the Model Y in 2021 and the third best selling EV overall and they're selling every single one they can make (at enormous markups) so the point is that characterizing it as "a sales...
