    S/3 Comparo -- Driven Back-to-Back-to-Back

My kids tell me that the rear seats in our 3 are not anywhere close to the comfort of the rear seats in our S85 or P90D. The acceleration in the 3 is good, but a Model S P100D is a whole different world. I do look forward to seeing what the performance Model 3 feels like. The prototype they...

Supercharger - King of Prussia, PA

Range anxiety is vastly more common among non-owners than owners. Our Model 3 has over 300 miles of range. If you regularly drive 200 miles around town in a single day, you're very much the exception. Unless you are unable to even install a NEMA 14-50 receptacle at your place of residence, I...

We did a drive around the orange garage ground floor on Sunday, and saw no evidence of charger construction.

Supercharger - King of Prussia, PA

Superchargers at KoP will be helpful to some locals with long driveways. I prefer not to pay a big gas truck to plow my 500' driveway, but it can be a bit much to manage when we get over a foot of snow. Electric snowblowers have improved, but not enough yet to reliably handle a big job. Also...

    Supercharger - Breezewood, PA

I'm really looking forward to being able to skip both Harrisburg (inconvenient detour) and Somerset (pedestrian unfriendly, not a Wendy's fan). Will be much nicer to instead just hit Breezewood when on the PA Turnpike, between Cranberry and the King of Prussia/Valley Forge area.

@jdo: Correct, the future sites are shown with the disclaimer "Exact timing and specific location may vary", and are generally centered on Google's location for the town they are named after, rather than the exact location they hope to use.

    Supercharger - Tarrytown, NY

So Thanksgiving looks theoretically possible, but certainly not a done deal. I'd love to be able to use this Thanksgiving day.

Has anyone stopped by to see if construction has begun? It's been over 3 weeks since I was in Maryland and checked on my way home...

I stopped there yesterday and didn't see any evidence of construction.

Sorry, wasn't paying attention and screwed up the quoting. Only first line above was supposed to be the quote.

I think Tesla's next redesign should incorporate cast iron sewer pipe for the verticals. And then fill it with concrete after the wire has been run. Next truck to back into one of those puppies will spread the word to be more careful! We could even start putting "kill marks" on the side of...

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Actually, I think Putin's behind it. Business Insider had an article today on how Russia will run out of cash by 2018 if oil prices don't recover. That's what happens when you disguise a huge gas station as a superpower state. They're not only trying to influence our elections to promote...

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Front in Superchargers are easier to use with a bicycle rack on the trailer hitch, and are more obviously refueling stations to ICE drivers who are used to their gas pumps being on the side of the car rather than behind it. If the lighting is inadequate, perhaps Tesla can upgrade it in the...

We're getting awfully close to the previously updated July 31st decommission date for Bethesda! Any updates on Laurel or Bethesda?
  16. P

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

So first the Newark, DE Supercharger, arguably the most critical on the East coast, is out for multiple days, with no action on Tesla's part to mitigate the situation (generator, staff, signage, etc). Then Bethesda gets decommissioned before Laurel is up and running. And I guess we're supposed...

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

We certainly don't want to delay the opening of this station. I'm hoping they'll repaint the adjacent spot into a motorcycle parking space.
  18. P

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

CHAdeMO chargers have certainly improved. I remember when we had our Leaf that 50% chance of success was optimistic, but we've only had one failure in the last 7 CHAdeMO attempts.. I convinced my wife to use Royal Farms in Joppa, MD yesterday, and I just got back from charging my Mom's car...
  19. P

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

+1 @kevinf311: CHAdeMO is much cheaper and better than ICE. Takeaways: 1) CHAdeMO adapter should reside in car (FRUNK if not used otherwise) during all road trips. Just in case. 2) When doing mileage planning, don't intend to roll into a Supercharger with less than 30 miles left. Probably...

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

Fortunately, the temporary two-stall Supercharger in Bethesda wasn't as overcrowded as I expected. Busy, but not crazy. I hope this doesn't drag into the weekend, though!

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

Tesla says they are waiting on the local power company, who has not provided any indication as to when it'll be fixed. I think we need to figure out how to bug the power company and bombard them with calls until they provide an estimate.

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Speaking of Newark, it's down, meaning that we REALLY are hurting by not having Laurel live yet. It's 205 miles from Hamilton Marketplace to Woodbridge, and Woodbridge is pretty far out of the way if your day trip destination is the Maryland side of DC. I'm expecting the temporary SuperCharger...

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

Bethesda will likely be absurdly mobbed. If it were me, I'd go via Harrisburg/Hagerstown (adds an hour) and hope it's back up before the return leg. Or use CHAdeMO. My wife, however, doesn't consider either of those to be acceptable alternatives. If not back up by morning, she'll likely...

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

The Newark Supercharger is temporarily down for maintenance. Customer service didn't have an ETA on its return to duty. My wife is supposed to be driving to Washington DC in the morning, and the Laurel site isn't up yet. Can't take the ICE, either, since we sold that about a month ago. Not a...

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

+1 @bhzmark: ICE drivers are used to refueling stations being on the side of the car, so this "looks" more like a gas pump to them. But also helpful to owners with the new Tesla bike rack installed. I hope they ensure more pull-in stalls in future deployments!

Wow, it took a week just to put up signs? Good thing I got the EVGO membership for our trip next week...

Thanks for the update! Really hoping this is live by the 22nd. Seems likely that it should be, even if barely!

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Most likely it's to drop below the frost line, which is 30" in Maryland.
  29. P

    Supercharger - Harrisburg, PA

My car is much more tolerant of rain than lack of charge. ;-) Ribbon cutting a non-operational SuperCharger doesn't sound quite as exciting.
  30. P

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Pull in spots look more like gas pumps, and should be more challenging to not notice. They're also easier to manage when towing a bicycle rack or similar. I hope we see more of them going forward!

So we lost the one front-pull-in spot? I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I go to the beach with three bicycles on the back.
  33. P

    Supercharger - Harrisburg, PA

Excellent! That's consistent with an email from the Tesla SuperCharger team that S.Grot posted to Tesla's forums on April 9th, which included: "... The site is under construction and we hope to open the station around the end of this month. ..." Maybe we'll get really lucky and the crew will...

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Sorry, I should have double checked the reveal video before posting to avoid incorrect info per Supercharger expansion plans. The reveal indicated 3,608 current Superchargers, so that's clearly stalls not sites. Makes sense to focus on stalls, since most of the other DC fast chargers...
  35. P

    Supercharger - Harrisburg, PA

So that would appear to confirm 8 stalls, right? Two front in (suitable for vehicles using a tow hitch) and six back-in? Right?
  36. P

    Supercharger - Laurel, MD

Harrisburg was the ugly duckling for years. Now that it's actually under construction, some site's gotta pick up the baton, right? But if Elon's going to double the SuperChargers in the next year, one would hope that'd include the ones already marked as "coming soon" on the map.

Supercharger - New Jersey Turnpike Rest Areas - Molly Pitcher & Joyce Kilmer

Great to see progress! When I saw the quote above from the first page of this thread, I thought it should really be: "NJ Turnpike authority commissioners wake up, find they're living in 2014. Investigation finds PA Turnpike commissioners still asleep."
  38. P

    Tesla Supercharger network

Thanks! I think that stall data/graph is actually more useful than the station version. Delaware and Rhode Island look pretty similar on the station chart, but the stall chart shows why Newark is more of a mess on weekends than you'd realize from the station chart. Similarly, Maryland looks...
  39. P

    Tesla Supercharger network

What the third chart means is that while my griping about PA needing more Superchargers is totally justified, Michigan and Tennessee are even worse. Red line is estimated vehicle miles traveled within each state divided by active Superchargers. This might not have direct use, but allows us to...

Doesn't sound like they'll be running short on daily charge any time soon!

    Tesla Supercharger network

+1 smartypnz. Unless someone is successful in explaining the difference between a parking space and a refueling space, there's no chance of this location working out. Teslas are not allowed to park there, only to charge there. Any Tesla parked and not plugged in deserves to be towed just the...

    Supercharger - Allentown, PA

Thanks for checking, EVSteve! We got our hopes up after the article with a Tesla rep saying it'd be open by the end of Nov. I'll have to double check whether they specified which year.
  43. P

    Supercharger - Allentown, PA

Given that "Tesla Motors Inc. spokesman Will Nicholas said the station is slated to begin welcoming motorists at the end of November", they're going to have to hustle to prove him correct! But it's been a week since our last spy mission (thanks, Steve!), so it's possible that things might have...

    Supercharger - Paramus, NJ

Absolutely. I would have used Paramus this Saturday if it'd been live. Philly -> Poughkeepsie included a 100 mile each way run between Edison & Poughkeepsie. Perfectly workable in an 85 with the nice weather we had, although I drove slower on the way up just to be safe, since I wasn't...
  45. P

    Supercharger - Allentown, PA

It would be rather challenging to test it before they break ground. Hope that it goes live before 2014 ends, given that it's been on the "Soon" and "2014" maps for quite a while now...
  46. P

    Tesla Supercharger network

I'd be happy with an updated "soon", "2014" and "2015" set, reflecting the realities of how little time remains in 2014.
  47. P

    Supercharger - Allentown, PA

Wow, even Edison made it from permit to construction in 156 days. We're at 189 days and counting based on the 4/4 adding of this supercharger site to supercharge.info, and the 10/10 post above indicating no construction yet, i.e. more than 6 months!

Sure, you can overcome adverse conditions by throwing a little extra time/money/energy at the problem. But planning such that you don't have to is a more elegant and efficient solution.
