Actual 0-60 performance of the S85D?

Tesla has always been a bit conservative with their non-P numbers.

Any advice from seasoned travelers to Northwest?

Regularly do Portland -> Seattle -> Portland year round. You shouldn't have any problems getting between SC in the PNW. Since you're going by the coast you also shouldn't have to worry about the passes. Generally if it's below 50F I give about a 10-15% buffer on what the trip planner tells me...

Solution for amateur radio operators? Impossible to use magmount antennas in a Tesla

Take everything on K0rg's site with a grain of salt. He's got a bit of an agenda against hybrids/EVs and a lot of what he talks about flat out isn't true. For instance you can run a 1/2 wave without needing to ground to the chassy for UHF/VHF. I run up to 50W without even being directly...

Solution for amateur radio operators? Impossible to use magmount antennas in a Tesla

Power outlet in the console will work for at least 13A. That's what I pull on my Kenwood TM-V71A at high power. I've used for ~20 minutes at that level with no issues. Assuming you go straight to the battery you should be fine.

    Supercharger - Aberdeen, WA

PA would make a ton of sense with the ferry terminal and what not. I've done Centralia -> PA -> Centralia and it's certainly a bit of a stretch.

    Experience in Portland, OR?

+1 on Portland service center being good. If I remember correctly they're also expanding into a downtown location at some point in the future.

    Tesla moments

We've taken our car out to a few car shows and we showed up to one a tad late. Getting through the crowd to an open spot was a constant stream of people being surprised that there was actually a car behind them.

Drive unit replacement - getting better?

I'm 28k on an 85D and been all quiet on the DU front. Took a Tesla cab the other day(Classic 85) and definitely had a bit of a whine starting.

GM continues to try to stifle competition

Not to derail this thread but nothing I've seen about Fuel Cells makes them viable: 1. Hydrogen is *hard* to store, there's a reason most industrial applications have hydrogen sensors inside. The risk of explosion is non-trivial from what I understand. 2. Fuel cells degrade over time, so...

    Alignment same for 85D/85/P85?

Just got back from yearly service for our 85D and they did alignment(awesome!) but noticed at the top of the alignment page that it's for "Model S: Single Motor Rear Wheel Drive : Air Suspension(SU01) / Performance Plus (SU02/SUPP)". Do they use the same alignment specs for all Dual Motor and...

Question about charging for an Electrical Engineer/Tesla Guru

240V @ 5A = 1200W 120V @ 5A = 600W Like others have mentioned resistive loss is just a function of Amperage so you shouldn't see any performance difference(see Ohm's law, V = IR). Higher voltage is usually more efficient for transmission because at the same power the amperage lowers by the...

Model S Performance & Handling Compared to my BMW

No need to go with a P85 or P85D, an 85D will get you in the same 0-60 range, most people have seen 3.9-4s 0-60 on the 85D. AWD handles a bit more on rails than the P85. When I had a P85 loaner the back end wanted to get away from me a little bit in the rain, don't see the same with the 85D.

Ever wanted to know how many bales of hay a Model S can haul?

Nice! We've only have 2.5 acres here so no need for big gear as much fun as it would be.
  19. V

Ever wanted to know how many bales of hay a Model S can haul?

Eh, a car is a tool meant to be used, little bit of vacuuming and it'll be back to how it was before. And yes, we've hauled manure as well(bat guano) to no ill effect :).

Ever wanted to know how many bales of hay a Model S can haul?

Two, in case you were wondering. ICE wasn't running(dead battery due to not driving it as often as we should) so decided to take the Tesla. I will say that getting the 120# bales out of the back is a bit easier in the Subaru. Maybe Tesla needs to come out with a pickup truck next!

    Christmas Road Trip 2015

No worries about having to obscure your plate, yeesh. Did you have any issues with the louvers getting iced over? I'd be curious if Supercharging in that cold of weather would cause the pack management to kick into high gear like normal during a < 35% SoC. Considering we took delivery at...

Will such hospitality among Tesla owner last?

Yeah, I get about 50/50 on Seattle as well but down here in SW WA it seems a lot more common to wave/thumbs up. Have had some great chats at the centrailia supercharger though.

Autopilot lane keeping still not available over 6 months after delivery

Oy, not this again. If you can afford a $130k car you definitely are not "the little guy". There were quite a few of us who bought an 85D on the basis that it was a 10% efficiency bump in range at 300mi when it turned out to be closer to 2-3%. Do you see us wanting to burn Tesla to the ground...

    v7 UI Overhaul

Yup, and if you look at GPUs from the lines I mentioned from that timeframe(say here GPU Performance - The Apple iPad Review (2012)) you'll see that Tegra3 really doesn't match up well. Esp in the fill rate tests where the Tesla puts the most hurt(being that it's a 1920x1200 panel, supposedly)...
  26. V

    v7 UI Overhaul

Both of the other GPUs I've listed are only available as SOCs(with PowerVR from multiple vendors), there's really nothing special about the Tegra3. It was probably just a selection made on cost and Nvidia being close geographically to Tesla.
  27. V

    v7 UI Overhaul

Sadly even when the Tegra3 came out it was back of the pack WRT other GPUs in the space. I love the MS but it's really a shame they didn't go with a Adreno or PowerVR part. Really curious to see what they decided to use in the X(and if they went with a different part how they plan to handle...

    v7 UI Overhaul

Not to split hairs and derail this thread any further(seeing that we don't have any new information) but with Tegra3(and a good majority of GPUs) that actually does make a difference. If the texture can't fit in the local cache it will have an impact on the memory system. A solid color just ends...

Same here after .36, 85D. Called Portland service and they hadn't heard of it yet but pulled logs and will call back with an update. 2014 P85D Owners... hindsight? regrets?

Are freeway passing speeds really the gripe? I feel like my 85D has more than enough umph, the P85 loaner I drove even more. I feel like anything more puts you in triple-digit-lose-your-license territory but I guess to each his own.

Security from the frontlines... (OR How to Hack A Model S talk at DEFCON)

I think one striking difference between the Jeep hack and Tesla is the level of engagement and willingness to work with researchers and provide a bounty program. I remember when the Jeep hack leaked Chrysler was threatening legal action rather than hiring them.

Autopilot lane keeping still not available over 6 months after delivery

    P85D and P90D horsepower disagreement

Oh I understand. Many people ordered the S85D when it was supposed to get 10% better efficiency than the S85. In reality its closer to 2-3%. It just seems like beating a dead horse at this point. It's just a number with no real applicable metric since no car makes peak HP across the whole...

    P85D and P90D horsepower disagreement

I'm with #FirstWorldProblems, you've got a car that's quicker than 99.9% if other cars out there. EV drive trains are inherently different. If you don't like it go back to an ICE or another EV that has better performance characteristics.

Our first kid just arrived recently and with the heat-wave(yeah I know 90deg in WA is heatwave) I was looking into getting shades for the rear pano roof. Unfortunately Tesla wants $150 for them! Delivery experience has so far been sub-par

Sorry to hear that, the delivery process can be a bit rough. You'll probably find that like most people once you have the car you largely forget about any hiccups in the process but it would be nice for them to be a bit smoother overall.

    Turning off lights in Park?

I've noticed in Park that the headlights, DRL and brake lights all stay on. Is there any easy way to turn the car "Off" without exiting the driver's seat? We regularly park and stay in the car for a while and I would rather they not stay on.
