    Combined Charging System (CCS) 2.0

Just to be clear, in the EU the only cable you are supposed to bring with you is the Type-2 (and eventually the Type-1 in France…) The Type-2 one can buy is only capable of AC charging (220V 1-phase or 480V 3-phase) 110 V does not exist in EU and all DC fast chargers (including SuperChargeurs...

    Ordered M3--Smart phone next?

Just try without it at first (only using the NFC card), only then decide for yourself if you actually need to have a phone and which one. You can use the car with only the card. Things you'll miss : - preconditioning the car (it's less of an issue than a gas car, in the winter at least, because...

Will the vehicles of the future be powered by electricity or hydrogen?

LPG car are forbidden in underground garages because LPG is heavier than air. In case of a tank leak (even a small one), all the gas would collect in the garage, having nowhere to go and just waiting for a spark to go boom. That's not the case for H2. As it immediately reacts with air, if you...

What are those 12V voltage spikes when idling?

First of all: thank you, @lymex2018, for testing this and sharing your results with us. :) Really going on a limb here : could it be the security package ? It was for some time not available in the US but available in the EU (no idea about China). Maybe it is now in included in every car ...

Plan: Off grid solar with a Model S battery pack at the heart

So a little list of problems : - high voltage DC power electronics are not really marketed/sold to single persons… so you've got to jump through hoops to even get a price, let alone buy something - as a consequence of the above, it is only possible to get good prices when buying in bulk - you'd...

    Tesla Semi

You are both right; I have not considered that it might be a mockup. @mongo, do you mean the plug on the truck might be different from these I talk about ? Like for the S/X/3 where you need a UMC to connect the car (proprietary plug on US models) to any standard plug ? That's obviously not a...

    Tesla Semi

I wonder what is the use case for these chargers. I originally thought that there were not supposed to be an on-board charger, that all charging would be DC. Or maybe a small, 1 to 10kW "charger" to "run climate control" while idle and not really charge the battery. Visibly, I was wrong. And...

Battery Drain (Sitting, Parasitic, Vampire), What to Expect?

All car (ICE included) have the same problem. Some energy is required to power minimal electronics (at the very least key fob detection) and batteries (both the 12V found in any car and the high-voltage found in EVs) will self discharge. The self-discharge is quite low (in the order of months to...

Dual Charger - Chargeur 22 kw

Will the M3 GUI allow you to disable the traction control?

On a P85D, even pulling the fuse won't help you… the car enters some sort of front-wheel drive power limited mode. (Road&track article from june 2015)

In the same great video, it is possible to glimpse on the left screen some sort of control for air pressure (with psi units); which means it probably is an important feature.

    Tesla Semi

For the Semi, Tesla can spend some time educating prospective buyers, enquiring about their trips. That would especially make sense for the first deliveries; after that the industry will have a better grasp about the real-world capabilities of the truck.

200 kWh Roadster Pack: How is Tesla Pulling This Off?

Why couldn't it have a gearbox ? It's not because they couldn't find a supplier for the original Roadster that none exist now. Rimac has made 2-speed gearboxes for their cars for a few years now. Reading the specs, it is rated at 450Nm of input torque, with "available reduction ratios" of 1:3,5...

    Tesla Semi

I assume the black truck was the "300-mile range" one versus the "500-mile range" of the big one. (Or maybe the other way around, for aero reasons ?) Tesla's website says 300 *or* 500 mile range.

Parking outside in very cold weather and not plugged in

With a supercharger 25km away, it won't be a problem ! (An annoyance, maybe.) If you ever need to use it, drive to car like you stole it (tell your wife someone on the internet told you to do so ;-) ) so as to warm the battery up. A cold battery can't charge/will charge very slowly.

Parking outside in very cold weather and not plugged in

Can't help you much more than saying that the battery heater can draw a little less than 6kW (cabin heater in the S is another 6kW). Your car won't need 6kW as it will only needs to keep the battery warm, and there won't be cold, high speed air going under the battery due to driving. 110V at...

Has Tesla been working on traffic logic since 10/16 - and if so - how?

Your point (1) seems a bad idea. "Never trust user input" is a good adage in the computer world. I guess with enough users, you could smooth out thing ? But then what happens when a law change the way people are supposed to drive* ? Retraining the NN would be nearly impossible. Then (2) seems...

    Has anyone gone off grid

If you haven't seen it yet (you only have been around for less than a month), check wk057's setup. I think it is the closest you'll find to retrofitting batteries and going "off-grid" whilst making no other compromises (I know, it's not exactly what you asked; but I thought you might be...

    Model S Winter Heating

I think you are overthinking it. During normal driving, just use the normal climate control, and set the heating seat to whatever you feel confortable. For long trips, pre-heat before you start (this is the most important part) then set range mode on. If you know you will be cutting it close...

Transition to higher voltage batteries / DC fast charging

If you do that, cells will get out of balance. I guess, if you rarely do 800V charging sessions and maybe beef up the BMS's resistors, it could work out. Do you know any product that uses a battery like you propose ? (Just curious; theoretically it is a great way to have the different voltage...

    Model 3 Emergency Response Guide

That is a great solution for the whole "front trunk is not secured" issue that people first noticed with the MX but that the MS also has, with no downsides that I can think of. Also, I see that the M3 has a second first-responders loop to cut out high-voltage (in the rear right pillar). Does...

Transition to higher voltage batteries / DC fast charging

Even if you choose to go with option 2, you still have to at least make the HVAC able to operate at both 400 and 800V. (You need cooling/heating when charging fast) and probably also the DCDC converter (though you could probably get away with a beefed-up 12V battery.) So basically, you have to...

Request for info: Taper on new "Urban Superchargers"

I also have some trouble understanding that. Maybe the aim is more to have a consistent, long-ish* time to charge rather than pure speed ? And to differentiate them from the normal superchargers so that people on road trips won't confuse them. Also, just a quick question for anyone who might...

Time to crack her open and get inside the network for AP2

Putting it in park, or longpress for (P) - what's the difference?

I am pretty sure there is no difference when the car is stopped (except for the extra red 'P'; in practice only the rear parking brake calipers engage). But the difference is when you try to do that while driving (in D, above a certain speed) : a short click or flick of the stalk should put the...

Model 3 entry via ... keycard & app. No fob.

Before punching a hole in the card, please check you are not punching a hole in the antenna embedded in the card ! Model 3 entry via ... keycard & app. No fob.

I couldn't disagree more to this statement. The less things I have in my pockets, the better. Especially if I can get rid of a bulky one-usage key fob. The smartphone app might not work for everyone, but I think the "back-up" (real credit-card sized that you can actually put in a wallet) is a...

If I Ran The Zoo: Designing a charge connector for the future

I have seen mentioned a few times that an 800V charger can charge a 400V battery. While this is can certainly be true, a lot of current Chademo chargers cannot charge Zero's electric bicycles who have a nominal battery voltage of around 100V. (The charger needs to be able to go down to 90V.) It...

    Heat Effects & Overnight Charging

The big battery pack is managed by the car. It will use the A/C to cool it if necessary. As long as you do not plan to leave it unplugged for weeks/months in the heat, it will be fine. The 12V battery is not thermally managed however (just like in an ICE), and Tesla seems to be keen to keep the...

    Burbank supercharger fake outage cone?

I have heard of some places where cones were intentionally placed (by the property manager ?) in each charger spot to discourage ICEing. Maybe this was the case here ? The only legitimate reason I could see that would need to disallow any car from using the parking space is if the paint is...

    Model S saved my life

if you haven't gotten to the salvage car yet : In order to get power to the 12V system (it runs basically everything except drive motors, AC compressor and HVAC) check your car's manual. There is a way to open the frunk without power (not sure it'll work in your case, seeing the extensive...

Is there a mechanical link to driveshaft?

Well, anyways the point is moot because even if the steering wheel has a direct mechanical link to the wheels (which I believe it does) and the "bad guys" decide to turn the wheels on the highway by surprise, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to override it by force before something bad happens. (When...

    Remote Activation of Front/Rear Defrosters

It's not binary… What do you think of this explanation : your particular 12V battery is better than average ? Also, as your sub is only running when the car is on, the DC-DC converter takes the extra load, not the battery. There should be no extra cycles on your battery, nor higher than normal...
  46. S

    Remote Activation of Front/Rear Defrosters

Not a valid excuse for Tesla. They can just run the DC-DC converter at that point; if you need to defrost, you will most certainly also need cabin and/or battery heat, so the contactor will be closed anyways.

    Supercharger V3 over 350kW

Since the most recent superchargers are 150kW and AFAIK nobody has seen more than 121kW getting into their cars, I think no current cars will be able to charge at such a speed. But you would still benefit from a higher capacity charger; for example if they keep their current shared charger...
