Hit by parking charge at Northampton UK supercharger

My car broke at Grantham supercharger; I was obviously there for quite a long time. I asked at the WH Smiths shop inside and they added my reg to a list. No ticket/invoice/"fine". So you can just do that if for some absolutely inexplicable reason you want to spend time in that delightful loaction.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S versus Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tires versus Michelin Cross Climate+ ?

I've had "acoustic" (foam-lined) and non, back-to-back, on my MS and thought there was very little difference. Certainly wouldn't pay any extra money or tolerate any hassle in order to have the foam. On the tyre issue, the Nokian WRA4 performance in winter weather was absolutely outstanding...

Used Model S - sweet spot for circa £50k

It's a whole world of complication but IMV is worth the effort. Basically the hard part is the CAN bus cable, there are 2 types depending on age of car and they take several weeks to come by post from the USA. It connects under the cubby under the MCU, which is a pain to access if the car has a...

Used Model S - sweet spot for circa £50k

Personally - I have a Model S which has been quite unreliable, and while not financially a stretch to own, I would find the experience spoiled entirely by multiple £1000+ repair bills pa. Whereas, oddly, I find the car's rattling and unreliability comic, and unstressful. So, warranty is HIGHLY...

Used Model S - sweet spot for circa £50k

Buying a used Tesla is increasingly problematic. First of all were the problems with the 90 batteries - as you note there are several versions, the v1 on a P90D can't make full quoted power. There is also a tendency for the 90s to suffer accelerated degradation. You don't want to pay for your...

    Firmware version concentration level high?

Generally, a new version is pushed aggressively when it contains a bug fix which Tesla consider important. "Aggressively" in this context can mean not just pushing it quickly, but also pushing it to cars with no wifi - which costs money in mobile charges. The bug fix can be something visible...

Cpo cars - no call back?

The small print says that but in practice it's an unfair contract term - especially if there's damage to the car which isn't declared to you before paying - so you can get it back. As with all processes and procedures at Tesla, doing so might well try your patience though.

3 Pin Charger Dropping to 5a

Apologies. The UMC is fukt then, that's pretty definitive. If you had a building full of Tesla owners it might have been interesting to swap the bs1363 tail off your UMC with someone else's as a test, but as it is I think you can just put the whole UMC back to the service centre and say "it's...

3 Pin Charger Dropping to 5a

"Tested with the charger at work" is very ambiguous. Do you mean "you tried your UMC in another socket and it acted the same"? If so, then agreed, raise a service request in the app. If you're near a service centre, and you just turn up, I'd hope there's a reasonable chance they'd test/swap it...

3 Pin Charger Dropping to 5a

If the plug is AT ALL warm at just 5 amps, either the plug or socket is seriously defective. Focus on that.

    BP Chargemaster = Daylight robbery.

It's always been inconsistent and dependent on SoC and luck. It's possible they have done something, but their MO for MORE THAN HALF A DECADE has been to lie and do nothing, which remains by far the most likely option.
  12. Z

    BP Chargemaster = Daylight robbery.

Ecotricity have been telling gullible people that they're fixing their rapids to have more compatible CCS since at least the BMW i3 launch (2013). They haven't lifted a finger to do so since then. Indeed, in their current "squatting on the MSA sites waiting to get bought out" business plan, it...

    BP Chargemaster = Daylight robbery.

It's not outrageous - it probably barely breaks even. It's a very expensive machine, a very very expensive grid connection, and very expensive power. Industrial uses like this do not benefit from all the hidden subsidies we get on domestic power - they pay a hefty penalty for peak-time use and...

    BP Chargemaster = Daylight robbery.

CPS is a disaster. Go scroll around zapmap looking at comments - perhaps half the sites are in good reliable working order, and a good proportion of those will be blocked by a freeloading local when you need them. No revenue == no funds (or incentive) for repairs.

Bought an ‘18 Model S advice needed

Agreed re above - you need in writing that the account is in a state such that supercharging is possible. It's taking many weeks for Tesla to process change of ownership in the UK at present. They need to ACTUALLY TEST THAT IT DOES SUPERCHARGE, not just tell you it's OK. How far you need to...

Amps and efficiency on the UMC

This is an interesting post. Is it possible there is an error in measurement? EV AC charging is generally most efficient at maximum rated current, or perhaps just under it. This is because rectifiers are generally engineered to be most efficient at around their rated current, and because...

    Under-floor rattle when turning right?

As per the above - if it's from inside the car and sounds like something moving around in a small space, it's a foreign body in the HVAC duct under the seat. The vent is under the seat, in the floor - pull the seat all the way forwards to see it - and has no protection at all, so small stones...

Real World Model 3 UK Experience

It depends. If you are going up and down the M1 during daytime then I agree - you'll mostly do ~50, and even when it's not busy there are enough HADECS cameras that going over 75 and then slowing down for them all is more faff than it's worth. However if you're, say, going down the M5 at...

Wiki UK and Ireland Supercharger Site News

Brigarse, both directions, has been complete in terms of having all the stalls in place for about 2 years. They are not powered and have never been powered. The Northbound side (which is actually Eastbound - it's an East-West highway and the North/South naming is incorrect and confusing) has...

Wiki UK and Ireland Supercharger Site News

Isn't it fascinating watching the almost complete lack of progress on superchargers in England, and contemplating the M3 sales buzz. The "opening soon" sites on the map are just another example of Tesla's marketing including bare-faced lies. There's going to be utter chaos at the popular...

    Second thoughts on FSD

One of the few certainties about FSD is that desperation for cash/revenue will bring the fire sale upgrade pricing back one quarter end. They will try to protect its perceived value for a while, but sooner or later they'll offer it for peanuts in a great fire of brand image and owner goodwill...

Planned supercharger sites mean nothing. Some have been in planning for years. Some have been installed but not powered for months or more. Vendor Scan My Tesla, a CANBUS reader for Android

I installed the OBDLink app. It wouldn't connect with the device attached to the Tesla - had to move it to an ICE relic. It would then connect, so I started the firmware update process (from 4.3 to 4.5.1). The update process aborted with an error part-way through and now my OBDLink is bricked...

Vendor Scan My Tesla, a CANBUS reader for Android

It's not a bug. SMT generates a log line each time it receives a CAN bus frame which it knows how to decode. Each type of CAN bus frame has different data in it - some have battery temperature data, some have the throttle opening, some have charging limit data, etc etc. Therefore, each log...

Looking at the used market for a Tesla Model S

It's teslafi, not the dashcams. Vampire drain is barely altered by dashcams - they're perhaps 10W each at worst - whereas 5% a day represents vampire drain of perhaps 140W. I speak from experience - I have no teslafi, nothing keeping the car awake, power saving enabled, dual dashcams running...

Looking at the used market for a Tesla Model S

220-223 is right for a 70D with the "true 70" (not sw-locked 75) pack. It's a good pack, made of the same cells as the 85 which are very long-lived. Being 350v it is slow on chademo, and it supercharges pretty slowly over 50% SoC, but it is a solid piece of kit unlike the ropey 90s. I've seen...

    What have I just bought?

The LEAF propilot is nothing like Tesla AP. The user interface is utterly bizarre - a sea of buttons - and once configured "on" it comes and goes without warning other than lane edges on the dash display changing colour. When it loses sight of the lane edges - which it does A LOT - it simply...

    Taper curve of 85kwh battery (2014 s85)

It's normal. The BMS might be a bit miscalibrated, so the charge might end at 97 or 98%. The capacity is still there. A couple of cycles of 100%->very low->100% usually resolves it so that 100% occurs at 100% again.

    Latest update... ;)

Nicely put. It is good to get new functionality, but v9 has been an absolute shambles since launch and it is utterly, utterly infuriating that they do no testing before releasing these updates. I will never forget the first time I tried to use the nav in the first release of v9; they...

    Supercharging: 75 vs 85 pack

The old 70 pack touches 116kW peak but it tapers away rapidly from 25% SoC. The 75 tops out at about 96kW, but will sustain over 90kW until 50%. So, real-world, the 75 is faster than the 70; the 70 only has an advantage when you arrive almost empty and leave pretty soon after starting. The...

    buying used direct from Tesla

My mate has just ordered a CPO from Tesla UK. The experience has changed completely from last year. Enquiries are dealt with offshore (somewhere in the EU) by non-native English speakers. Chademo or no Chademo?

I get what you mean, and it's not wrong, but the "public charging is shite" thing is not really my point. My point is that there's a lot to get right - physical connection of chademo adaptor to chademo point can be tricky, the mobile apps are generally flakey and often require payment details...

    Chademo or no Chademo?

The Chademo adaptor is essential if you live in the provinces really - lots of cross-country journeys become very awkward (or dependent on destination charging being available and working) without it. If the cost rankles, buy on ebay, and remember that when you're done with it you can sell it...

    12volt

I have read on this site that the 12V battery is not supported (charged) by the main pack after the main pack drops below 5%. I haven't tested this, but if it's true, it could account for why discharging your main pack has killed your 12V.

Advice on 2nd hand purchase appreciated

You can buy another 4 years / 50k miles from Allianz, so long as you do this before you reach 4 years / 50k miles and so long as your vehicle has FSH. It's £3200. The Allianz warranty has exclusions, whereas for all their (many) faults, Tesla are pretty good at fixing warranty issues (slowly)...

Advice on 2nd hand purchase appreciated

They're great cars and a mostly-motorway usage is what they excel at. I second the comments about AP, it is essential. Out-of-warranty costs for repairs are pretty high, and at >20k/year you will burn through the 50k miles of the manufacturer warranty pretty quickly if you go for a new one...
