    Sales tax error

This has happened to me twice - in 2018 on a new Model 3 they charged a bit over $200 in extra sales tax. The error was caught at when registering at the local tax collector. After contacting Tesla they ran the numbers admitted fault, and issued a refund check after months of time spent having...

    245 40 19 tires efficiency

Michelin MXM4s in the 19" OEM width have a nice lip to them to prevent curb rash. At least when I got a set two years ago from Costco

Real world charging speed on 5-20 @ 110v

I get 5 mph on a 5-15, so you should realistically get 6-7 mph on a 5-20. Keep in mind this will go down if you live in a cold weather area. Regular wall outlets worked for me until I got a J1772 charger. You just have to remember to plug the car in every time you are home.

Increasing range by going with skinny tires?

I really think that the 18" Aeros are going to be the best bet to get a real world 10%+ bump in efficiency. My LR RWD had a 230 wh/mile with aero wheels, and is now around 255 wh/mile with aftermarket 19's. Those lifetime numbers are a mix of city and highway driving, so the highway portion...

What's with the Ohmmu 12V battery?

Well, like clockwork with a bit over two years of ownership in hot Florida weather, Mobile Service just came to replace a failed 12V battery under warranty. In a few more years I’ll definitely be curious how people’s Ohmmu’s are holding up and possibly purchase one once my cars warranty expires...

    14-30 charge adapter - 110v/120v capable?

I've seen people on this forum mis-wire a 14-50 and inadvertently put a hot wire on the neutral (unused) and the neutral wire in the hot terminal, then ask why their car was charging at 32A/120V. So that leads me to believe that if you were to only connect three wires (correctly) to a 14-30 plug...

    M3 LR range is 322?

On the RWD it used to be 310 then a software update pushed it to 325. On the AWD I think it’s always been 322. There are no official highway/city ratings that I’m aware of. The only thing I’ve seen is MPGe ratings on the EPA website

    Still baffled by range issue

Air Conditioning still impacts ICE vehicles fuel economy. There are several SAE papers that suggest up to 25% decrease in fuel economy in ICE depending on the length of trip and how hard the A/C is run. Whether the A/C compressor is belt driven in an ICE or a motor in an EV, it still takes a...

BRAND new M3 Standard range. What is the max?

Just an estimate. It can vary a bit based on environmental things like temperature, wheels, consumption history, etc

    Wireless Charging Options

Running high power USB-C into a wireless charger won’t make it any quicker on an iPhone. All iPhones have a 7.5W wireless charging limit, so the 10W output of the cars front USB ports with micro USB cables going to the 10W wireless chargers in the Taptes pad will max out the phone capability...

    Wireless Charging Options

For the money, the Taptes seems to be the best option. Mine has worked flawlessly so far. Similar to the Tesla/Nomad for way less money. The Taptes does have a short USB-C cord integrated into the ledge if you ever want to charge corded similar to what you do now. It also includes all the...

Charging issues with my Model 3

On the main electrical panel in your house you need to locate the circuit that the wall connector is on. Hopefully the electrician labeled it. Take note of the circuit breaker rating printed on the breaker. Then turn off the circuit for a few seconds and turn it back on to reboot the wall...

Charging issues with my Model 3

Is it a Gen 3 (one they currently sell) wall connector? You may have to use the WiFi setup to tell the connector what circuit power it is hooked up to. I’m not sure but it may default to the lowest setting. Can you post a picture of your charging screen? Also make sure the amps are not limited...

    Wall connector or 14-50 socket

I will admit the wall connectors look cool, but I prefer the 14-50 for several reasons: - Industrial 14-50 outlet is $100, a $400 savings - If I ever sell the house I can simply unplug and go, instead of removing a wall connector and capping the circuit. - They can be used to power basically...

Where are you located? Scotland? If so then the model 3 comes with the CCS port and it should work with the same connector. Enjoy!

New Wifi Wall Connector 48 amps?

just cut it short and put a wire nut on the end. A 14-50 cord has hot-hot-neutral-ground (four wires). The Tesla wall connector only uses hot-hot-ground (three wires). So you don’t use the neutral and just cap it since it is unused.
  18. C

New Wifi Wall Connector 48 amps?

It is possible to make your own. Go to a home improvement store and get a 14-50 pigtail that’s a few feet long (replacement cord for an appliance) and terminate the ends into the wall connector while capping the neutral. You basically have exactly what Tesla was selling with the added benefit...

New Wifi Wall Connector 48 amps?

Hopefully the 72A chargers or something similar will make a comeback when the Cybertruck comes out. With a 150-200 kWh battery it seems like 48A might be cutting it close for an “overnight” charge if you run your battery down. Maybe Tesla collected data on early Model S folks and saw that very...

Adding second M3, 1 Dryer Outlet thus far

Be careful “beefing up” to a 14-50 outlet. If you are charging from a 30 amp dryer outlet, most likely the wiring installed in the wall was only installed to supply 30 amps unless the builder had a reason to put thicker (+$) wire in the wall. If I were you, I’d either leave the charging...

    Model 3: Charge to 80% or 90%?

I’d charge 90% and avoid the deeper discharge. I personally wouldn’t want to go less than 20% on a regular basis in case the weather gets cold, there’s a detour, other errands etc...

    Glass Breaking Fail

It blows my mind that Tesla doesn’t rehearse these presentations, since they rely on them to an even greater extent than the traditional manufacturers to get the word out. Especially testing the window stunt. Even the video about the air suspension didn’t work. I have a feeling this will be a...

    Why does NEMA 6-20 (240v 20a) get 4x the charge of 5-20 (120v 20a)?

Probably. I think people were maxing out the Gen 2 at 32A
  26. C

    Why does NEMA 6-20 (240v 20a) get 4x the charge of 5-20 (120v 20a)?

It should be able to charge as fast as you want on 120V. I’ve seen posts here of people who hired electricians to install a 14-50 but had the neutral and one of the hot wires installed backwards so they were charging 16 MPH at 32A/120V on the remaining correct phase for a while, until the...

    Hurricane and Tesla

If one has gasoline to power their whole house generator they could just pour a bit into an ICE car in a pinch as well... With the explosion of Model 3s there may be lines at superchargers on the way out of Florida as well. Last time Irma came through in the Fall of 2017 (pre model 3) there was...

    Bad Wrap Job?

Probably a road trip or love bug season in Florida where the front of your car will literally turn brown for a few weeks if you drive around a lot. Not a bad idea if you don’t care about looks for a few days.
  31. C

    Underbelly Damage?

Yeah just tell them to replace the 12V and see if the problem is resolved. You didn’t take the car in for a new main battery.
  32. C

Current cost of battery pack replacement?

Do you usually keep your cars beyond 8 years? I haven’t seen anyone have to foot the bill for a battery replacement, since the first Model S debuted in 2012, so their 8 year/unlimited mile warranty should start to expire in 2020 for the very first ones. So we should know within the next few...

Model 3 RWD motor difference vs AWD?

Didn’t bother watching the video but there’s only one type of rear drive unit being put in these cars. I have the long range RWD. It’s right in between the AWD and the SR+ in terms of acceleration rates but all Tesla’s will have the instant torque and throttle response without any lag. So you...

Warning for those charging using 120v

That’s a pretty good analogy. The amount of people that worry when their battery charges +/-5 miles on a full charge is weird.

The Difference Between The Charging Cable That Comes With The Vehicle And The Tesla Charging Box.

Since you are currently charging at 26 MPH and your car has a 72A charger, I’m guessing you have the first generation mobile cord hooked up to a 50 amp outlet that is drawing 40 amps of power into the car. Besides the hardwired install, the $500 wall connector has a thicker cable and is...

NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 for garage charging?

No. A wall connector does not use a neutral wire so a 6-50 can be converted if desired. Since it uses one less wire it can be cheaper to install. OP - it is true that some 14-50 outlets are not meant to be unplugged a lot. These consumer outlets are usually the $10 ones you find at Home...

Unable to charge using NEMA 14-50 outlet in garage and Mobile Connector

Does the car charge using the 5-15 regular wall outlet? If it doesn’t work then you could have a Tesla cord issue.
  40. C

    208 vs 240

Did the electrician verify behind the blank plate to ensure that the 4 wires (hot-hot-neutral-ground) for a 14-50 are present? Reason I ask is if it was wired for an EV charger like a Tesla wall connector or J1772 connector, those only use 3 wires (hot-hot-ground). If that’s the case, you’d need...

How to Calculate if Safe to Charge at 48 amps?

Don’t SoCal utilities give you a discount to charge at night in order to reduce peak grid loads? Might be worth looking into and scheduling the charge at night. Starting the day with a full charge is usually sufficient unless you are going 200+ miles a day.
  42. C

What's the expected charging speed from an 120V/15A indoor outlet?

If you can get a 20 amp circuit and the correct adapter it makes a worthwhile difference if you can’t install a 240 outlet. You can get 7 MPH instead of 5 MPH on a 15A circuit. The car will charge at full speed using an extension cord if you get a high quality 12 gauge one. I’ve been doing...

Nema 14-50 frequent unplug and replug

Unless you are driving 200+ miles a day, just leave the UMC plugged in at home. 14-50 outlets are relatively rare out in the wild, and unless you have a specific place in mind with several hours of time there, it really isn’t useful to carry around daily. Possibly the exception is if you were...

    New Home Build Charging Options

One option is install the power and data cables for a loadsharing Tesla setup, install a Tesla wall connector and leaving all the other points capped off with a blank wall plate. It would be super easy to add wall connectors later if you dive into a full Tesla fleet. If I were planning a house...

Rate of Charge Reduction (getting nerfed at Superchargers)

It seems the Model 3 has been around just long enough for this phenomenon to start kicking in, even with frequent supercharging and above average driving. In the example above, 15,000 kWh would be approximately 60,000 miles, and the 3 has only been in mass production for a little over a year...

    Model 3 reliability

If you have a 240V charger at home that can charge the battery completely overnight, owning a Tesla is an amazing experience. Like others have said, even with the range losses in the winter cold you should be fine as long as your average daily drive isn’t over 100 miles. If you do decide to road...

NEMA 14-50 UMC Adapter No Longer Included With New Purchases

It absolutely could be. Tesla isn’t losing business to $899 high power J1772 units. For Tesla, it’s the difference between selling an extra $500 connector and making it easy for people to use the included equipment which nets them $0
