Electrify America Fast Chargers - Huh?

Former electric company employee DFW here. We typically load transformers to 130% nameplate in the summer and 160% winter. Besides, the transformer is really heavy and so takes a long time to heat up. Since EV's only use the max charge power for ~10 minutes or so, it's not a big deal. We also...

Planning a Road Trip & Cutting it Close

cwerdna - Our experiences are very different. Both of my Teslas came with V2 (32A) EVSEs. I keep them in the cars. I bought V1 EVSEs for home charging as they permit up to 40A charging. Charging at an RV park at 32A will add about 30 miles of range in an hour. If you just need a few miles it's a...

Planning a Road Trip & Cutting it Close

I've never had to atop at an RV park but I've read where others have. If you can't make the next SC, an RV park is a lot better than being stranded. I ALWAYS carry an EVSE (cord) with a 14-50, 6-50 and 120V. I also carry a spare. We've got near 80,000 miles on two Teslas with more than 15,000 on...

Planning a Road Trip & Cutting it Close

Remember that you can stop at an RV park if necessary. I have driven 200mi (Texarkana-DFW) with no problem in my M3P. The charger in Texarkana is at an Olive Garden so we ate and let it get to about 97%. Then I carefully watched the predicted arrival charge % and adjusted speed and HVAC to...

THINGS I DON'T MISS ABOUT GAS VEHICLES

VUCKH - Relax about road trips. We have about 80K miles on our two Teslas with no road trip problems. Just navigate.

THINGS I DON'T MISS ABOUT GAS VEHICLES

Hundreds of pounds of cast iron and aluminum, 4 gallons of antifreeze all at 200 degF or more adds a lot of heat to a garage.

Don't have to let engine warm up. Garage is cooler in the summer.

Electrify America Fast Chargers - Huh?

We made a 4,000 mile road trip out west this summer. No adapter was used. We did use some destination chargers. Thank you LaQuinta. We had one glitch at Mammoth resort in CA where a couple of dispensers were out of order. That would have meant waiting in line a little while but it turned out...

Here in Texas during the hot summer I bet we do not see 240V during the day. My A/C unit is about 40 years old so I guess it's OK.

    Wiper fluid?

Probably has some kind of alcohol in it which would keep it from freezing and be flammable. I can't imagine them making a product that would harm your car.

Topping off Tire Pressure - Valve Stem Blow Back

A drop of oil in the Schrader might help if it's sticky for some reason. I don't think it could hurt. I have not experienced this or heard of it happening.

    Wiper fluid?

I DO NOT use any fluid with RainX or similar because it can drive the auto wiper function crazy. Also no ceramic coatings in the are of the cameras which are behind the windshield top center. No knock on RainX. It is great stuff. But it confuses the auto wipers. I do use fluid that freezes below...

My phone will sometimes close the Tesla app. I think that's when I cannot use the phone as key. There may be settings on your phone that will help.

When traveling, do you bother with trying to find hotels with EV charging? Can you depend on them?

The data block on Tesla's screen used to show destination charging. I don't see it anymore. We have resorted to calling ahead and asking but you have to get the front desk and not a reservationist. Since we make reservations as we approach anyway, it works to call and check then reserve. If you...

When traveling, do you bother with trying to find hotels with EV charging? Can you depend on them?

Found this out today. Tesla map in car used to include an icon for destination charging in the data block for a hotel. We're staying in a LaQuinta that has Destination charging but we only found it by using Google maps and looking thru the amenities link. Anyone have a good way of finding these?

So since we all know each other, I'm James. Wife is not real happy about dragging these across country but I'm trying to make it work. Why are There No 14-30 Outlet Timers?

Can I extend my Nema 14-50 from a different location?

If you mean use the wires in the Romex, yes if they are THHN and the Romex sheath is removed. Romex is not supposed to be exposed. It can be in a wall or attic.

Can I extend my Nema 14-50 from a different location?

For a 50Amp circuit it should be 6 gauge. When extending it, if it's not in the wall, it cannot be Romex. It is supposed to be in conduit. Flexible metal or plastic conduit is OK as far as I know. The wire inside should be THHN which you can buy at HD or Lowes. You can use the existing box if...

I'm looking for an efficiency formula. Drive speed vs charging time.

The car can tell you what you need to know. While charging watch the display of the remaining charge at your next stop. I leave when it says ~10%. Then when driving, if it starts dropping below 10%, slow down. If it climbs above 10% speed up. The 10% is only a suggestion. You may be more...

1st road trip on new M3P. Any advice?

I have a 2018 Model 3P. My first road trip was 560 miles total. Charging was easy. I was more nervous about the 'no sidewall' tires. 35 series on 20" wheels only leaves you about 1.25" from the rim to the concrete (pot hole). So carry plenty of air and check the TPMS regularly. I carry ~5lb over...

Y Performance Model- Looking for Insights

Wife has a MYLR and loves it. It's about twice as fast as her KIA Sorento. I bought a M3P in 2018. Immediately got rid of the performance wheels and tires. Wheels = heavy and tires gave only about 1 1/4" from rim to concrete. Nor for me. With the change, immediate improvement in ride and range...

When traveling, do you bother with trying to find hotels with EV charging? Can you depend on them?

Very first long trip, we started looking for a hotel while still about 2 hours out from our planned stop. The data block on the car's nav screen for the LaQuinta in Cookeville Tenn. showed to have destination charging. I called the hotel using the handset icon on the data block and confirmed...

You can get a deeper box that will make it easier. I regret that I did not. I could not find the nice 'two plate' receptacle but I did find that if I twisted the strands tightly together, they did not separate when the screw was tightened. You can also use ferrules to surround the wire.

Typical testing for Lithium cells is charging at 1C and discharging at 1C. That would be about 75 kW on our Model 3 and Y cars. My Y and 3 use about 20kW at 70 mph. So charging at ~11kW is really nothing.

In my #6 Romex, the #6 was THHN inside the outer sheath. Yes you should always have some sord of strain relief. In new construction, they usually staple the Romex near the box. You can buy short lengths of flexible conduit for really short runs like you're talking about.
