USB dashcam drive issues, seeking assistance to aid law enforcement

This drive had a previous life, during which it should have accumulated several thousand hours of runtime. The running hours, 8606 are probably mostly from the previous life. I don't drive that much (40k miles since 2019)... and for much of that time, I did not run Sentry mode. It's just dumb...

USB dashcam drive issues, seeking assistance to aid law enforcement

My car recently observed the vicinity of a crime (end of January.) Immediately afterwards, the local police asked me if my car captured footage; I had sentry mode on and they were looking for footage from the past hour. We pulled up the footage and reviewed it together, twice. All worked fine...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

I got my warning message at 45 months, so it was changed under warranty, but I was planning to do it proactively, soon. Given how many batteries from that era go at 3.5-4.0 years, I think a proactive change is a good idea. However, later firmware and electronics and batteries may last longer...

The M3 as a space heater [climate control running while parked]

Right - don't set a temp. If you set a temp, the car will try to keep that temp, whether it means running the heat or the AC. To stop maintaining a temp, turn it off. It will normally turn off when you leave the car... It will only stay on if you tell it to stay on by setting a temp after you...

windows down, on their own, no driver input.

Driver's side down: you accidentally hit the window button while exiting the vehicle. I've had it happen , was *sure* it wasn't me, but later caught it happening and realize I'd probably missed it before. All windows two inches: as others say, it's the app. You touched it, or someone else...

Have any new testers with a safety score above 80 received the FSD Beta 10.69.2.2 update yet?

I've been at 93/94 for months... Better not possible in my area. But I just got the update and am a new tester.

How do older Model 3s generate cabin heat?

That's how the battery was and is heated, not the cabin. The cabin was always heated via resistive heater (and seat heaters.) (I have a 2018.)

    Ingenext Boost Modules [aftermarket]

It's worth remembering that you can't just turn on encryption on the bus - everything attached to the bus needs to be able to process it. The main computer can easily add encryption, but not so much the window motor controller, for example. Many small items on the bus are not made with...

Does 2022.20.8 AP still require steering wheel torque?

The scroll wheel on the steering wheel would be a steering wheel input then, no?

Does 2022.20.8 AP still require steering wheel torque?

Do you use the input your volume control on the touchscreen, or the steering wheel?

Does 2022.20.8 AP still require steering wheel torque?

I expect the software to stop requiring occasional steering wheel input when people stop occasionally suing Tesla when they have an accident.

It’s Over, Tesla is That Good!

This. It was an unexpected game changer, for me. I drove from New Jersey to Ohio, walked from the car to my sister's house, and as I did, I realized I'm not exhausted the way I normally am from driving all day. I stopped every 90 minutes or so to charge a little bit. I stop every 90 minutes or...

    EV newbie with Teslaesque questions

I'm also a summer-2018 purchaser. I've never had a key card fail, nor heard of them failing. Phone as key is completely reliable in recent years if you allow for occasionally needing to kill/re-enable Bluetooth. It's rare and usually when the phone has been on for a long time, talking to...

    Skid plate justification

It doesn't look like debris impact, to me. That doesn't happen from a pebble or scrap; it would need to be a sizable and memorable impact. It looks more like pulling up too close to a curb or parking block that was higher than normal.

Squeaky /creaky driver's seat issue identified

It looks like the screw is not quite centered in the rail. If the rail can be turned around, it might put the space on the correct side. Alternately, if the rails are interchangeable, you might be able to swap your left and right rails to get a better fit.

    Washing Model 3

Also, we have a lot of overhead and rear window glass. Feel free to treat those with Rain-X if you want. Water will bead up well on the roof and look cool, as well as roll off more easily (as will snow.)

    Washing Model 3

Don't use dish soap; most of them are a little too harsh and can strip sealants and coatings over time, as well as pull oils out of the rubber on window and door seals. I like Meguiar's; gentle on finishes and seals, foams easily to lift so you don't wipe micro grit around (and makes it easy to...

Tesla asking $300 for a repair estimate (ran over road debris)

Well, assuming the price on the aeroshield went up even just a couple of bucks, the diagnostic fee will probably get eaten up by the shield and install. So, assuming the $300 is applied to repairs, you won't really be out much extra.

Would a Tesla make sense as an apartment owner with shared L2 charging?

I lived in a large apartment complex with two shared chargers for several years and it was not a problem. Early on, I printed a bunch of these on card stock and chopped it up: Every time I saw a new EV charging, I'd slip a card in their window. All but one EV driver texted me about the note...

Tesla asking $300 for a repair estimate (ran over road debris)

Tried to find the estimate for you, but it's already gone. I've had a $1k estimate (control arms) turn into a $0 repair (warranty.)

Tesla asking $300 for a repair estimate (ran over road debris)

Assessing the damage can take time and effort removing some parts to see underlying damage. They can't go on your say-so; many say "it's trivial" and don't really know how to look underneath. I needed to replace my aeroshield 2 years ago. It was $217.51 installed by mobile rangers in my driveway.

6’6” tall. Is the M3 for me?

6"5', 230 lbs here. My Model 3 is as comfortable as any car has been for me. The door pillar on the 3 is not as far forwards as on the S, but both are more forward than on other cars I've owned and they do make a difference getting in and out. That said, they also do make a difference in saving...

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

Let's not forget that LIDAR sensors can be blocked, too. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, until you walk over there and look down and realize you can still see dirt between the blades, and you look back to your side and realize it looks greener now.

    Ordered M3 SR+, am I done?

Check out the accessories. Nut caps. Wall chargers. These things go in and out of stock, and if you decide you want some of them, they may be out of stock when your car finally arrives.

    Pre-cool remotely?

No, it has always turned on the compressor if you turn on Climate from the app. What's more likely is that you fired up the app, and it did not connect to the car. Sometimes it takes a while to do that if the car is asleep. If the app is not connected to the car and you hit the climate button...

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

I think @scubastevo80 is right, but I'd add that you also have to be careful not to touch the brake. If you need to stop hard and tap the break even for a moment, that will take it out of autopilot. You don't want to forget that it's no longer steering for you.

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

I'm making it a habit to manually accelerate as soon as the coast is clear after a car crosses in front of me. I'm hoping this registers in the system as a manual intervention and I hope it helps feed information into the model. Also, it does not take it out of autopilot... As soon as they let...

    Yet another bug fix update

I just got it, too. 2021.4.18.11. The most advanced outdated software I've ever had. I think they're simply not working on any regular releases after 2021.4; the next release is the FSD beta, but they won't push that until they're ready. So, instead, all the bug fixes that would have made...

    Model 3 Tire Pressure

It's an old standard with tires. The lower the pressure, some more the tire compresses at the bottom. The act of squishing the bottom of the tire as it rolls takes up energy and increases the resistance of the tire to rolling. Tires at higher pressure don't compress at the bottom, so they can...

You're right, I don't know how I missed that. I stand corrected. So it seems that gives a reading on azimuth, but not elevation. That's why it can't tell if it's seeing a car in front of you or an overhead bridge.

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

I can't recall or find who posted the Andrey Karpathy (Tesla AI engineer) Workshop video, but thanks! I finally had time to watch it. Confirms my earlier suspicions: RADAR is introducing a lot of noise which takes a lot of work to reconcile. It's wasteful of processing power and fails to...

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

No, it's not capable of angular position measurement. If you want to insist that it's capable of this, please find a reference stating it can do this. I've looked at multiple data sheets, reviews, and filings for the ARS4 and ARS4-A RADAR sensors from Continental in several languages/countries...

Air intake filter - yes or no?

The Model 3 doesn't come with an air intake filter, but there are after-market options to add one. (Not talking about the internal cabin; talking about an additional filter to go on top of the air intake under the hood in the front.) Is it worth adding one? It wasn't engineered to have one...

This is not correct; it cannot determine where an object in front of the sensor is, only how far away it is. Given two objects in front of the sensor, it can estimate the angle between the two objects; that's the angular measurement being referenced. With a very small angle between two objects...

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

I think it's highly situational and a function of those roads. If there's a combination of visual and/or RADAR-reactive things on a given road, the same problems will keep happening. I know there were a couple of spots on a regular route of mine that generated phantom braking on the highway for...

Yes, RADAR can. On the other hand, a computer can respond in milliseconds to a visual cue that the car in front of you is slowing. It can hit the brakes in a fraction of the reaction time that a human could... Which is likely enough to avoid 99% of impacts in such instances. If the car in...

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

Just hit the voice button and say, "bug report," followed by whatever you want to report. But make it quick, because they don't give you much time. It's worth reporting, because the car will save data and footage from the moments before the report and send them in when you're on Wi-Fi again.

    Seat belt recall

The wording was "not properly attached." That implies that hardware is fine. Could be under-torqued (leading to loosening.) Could be over-torqued (leading to weakening.) Could be torqued fine, but failed to include an additive to lock the threads. Or failed to include a lock bolt to prevent...
