Blog New Version of Enhanced Summon Rolling Out This Week

His recent comment about it being difficult getting the cameras to recognize various shades of gray as a curb or boundary sounds like an argument for LiDAR (or at least that LiDAR would be an expensive shortcut until vision is refined). But for summon, I'd expect the sonar proximity sensors to...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Tariffs on imports are a penalty on the importer, not the exporter. Paying more for the same good is not winning. The stock market reaction to a trade war threats reflect this.

    Will Tesla ever do LIDAR?

Without side camera wipers or side radar, I think a requirement of FSD will be a regular Rain-X coating on all lens coverings. That stuff is amazing when first applied, better for visibility than (but not a replacement for) wipers. It's also unrealistic to expect owners to do this with enough...

    Tesla Insurance

Another thought: Tesla is already determining human driver quality for their FSD training. They only want data from what are deemed good drivers. A similar or identical algorithm could be used to determine human driver risk and thus insurance rates.

    Tesla Insurance

Insurance companies compete to attract the safest drivers. This is why they pour millions into developing driver-monitoring phone apps, so they have the data from which to do this. Tesla has those data and more, all of it much cleaner from the car's sensors, plus they are selling cars that...

Autonomy Investor Day - April 22 at 2pm ET

Based on the patents and demonstrations from Tesla, I think it was slightly disingenuous of Tesla to say they aren't using HD maps. You saw the 3D radar rendering in the demo, very neat. They've patented a way to improve GPS location using cameras, again very clever. They clearly are doing...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Model S fire in China spooking worries about a recall? Expectations ofoan S/X refresh? I can't imagine the FSD demo didn't impress, though maybe it could have been more revenue centric? I thought the revenue implecations we're clear and disruptive.

    How will Tesla demo FSD?

Tesla has at least one patent I've read on improving GPS accuracy with vision based mapping, which is different but similar to what LIDAR mapping is trying to accomplish. It's really clever although still relies on the primary sensors.

    Price adjustment

If ordering a software-limited vehicle and upgrading it later, does that mean avoiding the sales tax on the upgrade? (There was a twitter post and response from Elon weeks ago about this, that Tesla should never have been collecting sales tax on AP purchases, but I don't think it was ever...

    Model 3 Lineup Revised....again (4/11/19).

I'm on the last day of my M3 LR RWD 7 day trial period after accepting the car with no test drive. It looks like with the new pricing scheme, both FSD (technically, Autopilot) and blue paint dropped in price by $1000 and $500, respectively. What is Tesla's policy on refunding the difference...

Elon: "Feature complete for full self driving this year"

They only want the edge cases. The less they collect despite large amounts of miles being driven shows they are filtering out the already trained cases successfully. It's a very good thing.

Elon: "Feature complete for full self driving this year"

From earlier information, the SoC is a Samsung Exynos device (the specifics of which are unknown), and the NN accelerators are PCI-express devices connected to it. Now EM has said there are two NN accelerators per SoC. Two SoC for redundancy, two NN PCI-e devices per SoC, or four total. I...

Elon: "Feature complete for full self driving this year"

So, four NN chips on the FSD computer. Not two. If the earlier estimates of TOPS per NN processor are correct, this isn't that far off from nVidia's estimates for computational power required for L5 (estimated 160-240 for Tesla not including whatever small boost the Samsung chip provides, 320...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

FUD's the issue now. Price wasn't enough 1-2 weeks ago when TSLA was at current levels. Tesla doubled Q1 deliveries since then with that final 10 day push but I don't think the MXWL holders would've known that. So if not then, why now? FUD isn't enticing except to bulls trying to buy the...

I can't imagine MXWL shareholders want to tender their shares now if they didn't last week.

    Tesla autopilot HW3

How much and where are the full camera field-of-views currently cropped in HW2.5? Does this vary according to function (summon, navigate on AP, etc)?

    LR RWD Waiting Room

Our rep said our car was delayed in Chicago but she didn't know any details. The same day, I saw this on Reddit: Someone’s delivery will be late - Chicago : teslamotors No updates since. While I don't specifically see a blue/aero combo on that trailer, I can't rule it out, either!

Tesla acquires super cap company Maxwell

Not an expert here, but MXWL share prices are still trading +50% from when the announcement was made. It's only retracted a very small amount in recent days, so the acquisition remains priced in, or at least investors remain enthusiastic. It is still below the previous year's highs but well...

Show off FSD by running a Roadster around Laguna Seca autonomously

It would impress me. It's a different set of challenges than FSD on public roads. Autonomous racing leagues are an up-and-coming thing. There are certain lessons that would be applicable back to regular driving.

    Tesla autopilot HW3

Right. Old: nVidia CPU + GPU. New: Samsung CPU + GPU + Tesla NN accelerator. Likely a very different PCB and heat dispersion. I was using that terminology to differentiate that there is both a new SoC AND a Tesla NN accelerator as part of HW3.

    Tesla autopilot HW3

I went back and read the first ~10 pages of this thread. Good stuff. So the Tesla Neural Net processor runs as a PCI-X device, but HW 2.5 does not have a PCI-X slot with which to add it. Thus the entire SoC is going to be replaced for FSD vehicles, which in the model 3 is a reasonably quick...

    Tesla autopilot HW3

How do we know this? Do we have confirmation that there are a cluster of ARM CPU cores as part of the NN processor? Is the new chip a GPGPU or merely an accelerator of sorts? I've seen nothing verified. It was originally my assumption that the new chip would literally plug into the old board...

    LR RWD Waiting Room

Ordered 3/17, confirmed the next day for an estimated 3/30 delivery in Jersey. Long range, rear drive, blue with black interior, and FSD. I was surprised and impressed by the quick response.
