I'm going to trade it in on a new Model S. I'd have to sell this car for about $75K for it be worth it to not trade in, as we have a 9.75% sales tax rate here in Seattle.

Some states allow you to deduct the value of a trade in from the value of a new vehicle when calculating sales tax. Private sales are not eligible. So trading in for $68k is roughly the same as a private sale at $75k. The trade-iin will reduce his sales tax on the new Model S by almost $7k.

Yes shelbri that is the case here in WA. For the record TM gave me $65K for this car, so I would have needed to get $71,400 in a private party sale. I think $75K would have been a pretty fair price for a loaded 2015 85D in the excellent condition mine was in, but it was convenient to turn it in when I picked up my new 75D.
