ac button highlighted question

hi been a while

now that it is winter, been cranking the heat but Ive noticed that when using auto and increasing the temperature, the ac button is still highlighed. Is the ac activated, or the compressor etc? I googled that the A/C button in the car keeps the car’s compressor running so that it removes moisture from the air in the cabin.

I usually unhighlight the ac button thinking its blowing ac air that is heated, and the system then goes to manual.
