All wheel drive?

Our M3 is a 2021 dual motor long range. It was described as “all wheel drive”, and I took that to mean full-time awd, like a Subaru. Now I have heard it is not. When is it in AWD? I’d assume if it’s not full-time, it would detect poor traction and enable it, but I have not come across any information. Is the AWD a range extender?
Thanks!

It's full time AWD as much as a Subaru. You don't have to enable it or switch anything. It will put power to any wheel that needs it.
It's just that when driving down the highway, it's only putting power to the rear axle. Because that's all you need in that situation, and using only one motor is more efficient than both. AWD is actually a range reducer (it is on all cars).
